Chapter 553 Troublemaker
Wooing My Ex-Wife
Gwendolyn scoffed at Annie while reading her intentions.
Yet, the latter showed no response, as though she was utterly clueless. âWhat are you talking about, Ms. Harris? Secretly plotting against you? Is that what youâre planning to do to me?â
âI didnât say that, but let me make it clear-Iâm someone who holds grudges and doesnât like being taken advantage of. If anyone tries to mess with me, Iâll return the favor tenfold. Iâm sure many other people in the corporate world are as petty as I am. So, Ms. Annie, if you ever get knocked out and kidnapped while walking outside on the streets, you mustâve crossed someone in the first place.â
Annie appeared frightened as her eyes reddened in a flash.
âDonât scare me like that, Ms. Harris. Iâve never had any experience doing such things. Besides, I havenât crossed anyone. The only person I can think of isâ¦â
She trailed off while falling deep into thought before quickly fixating her gaze back on Gwendolyn.
âIf youâre here all of a sudden just to talk about getting robbed of your project, you can leave-because as long as youâre the director of Antea Group, Iâm going to snatch every project it gets its hands on.â
Annieâs eyes grew even redder as tears swirled within them. âWhy are you doing this to me, Ms.
Harris? What did I ever do to get on your bad side?â
Gwendolyn leaned back into her office chair casually. âIf you want peace between us, answer my questions.â
Annie nodded earnestly. âOkay, please do. Iâll tell you everything I know.â
A look of scorn flashed in Gwendolynâs eyes as she began, âAre you really Annie Steinfeld?â
Annie appeared puzzled. âOf course. Iâm Annic in the flesh.â
âWell, Ms. Annie, do you still remember where you met Paul?â
Annieâs brows furrowed. âThis is a matter between lovers. Do you really have to ask that, Ms. Harris?â
âIâm just asking where you met. Itâs not like Iâm intruding on your privacy. Are you not willing to answer me?â
âI think it was at a forest in Salinsburgh, Chanaea,â Annie replied truthfully, following the other womanâs gaze.
âOh?â Gwendolyn raised an eyebrow in surprise. âWhat were you doing there?â
âMy schoolâs club organized a field trip down to the countryside back then. Those who wanted to score more credits could join and work at a farm. I wanted to get a scholarship, so I signed up. I got lost in the mountains, but Paul, who was traveling in Chanaea, happened to be there too, so I asked him for directions. There, he fell in love with me at first sight and kept hitting on me the entire trip. I thought he was pretty interesting, so I gave him my contact.â
Gwendolyn lowered her head to conceal the coldness in her eyes. âI see. Thatâs interesting.â
Annic looked down and smiled, seemingly reminiscing about the good old days.
âThat sounds like an unforgettable memory to you. Well, Ms. Annie, do you remember which forest you visited? And which farm did you work at?â Gwendolyn continued, seeing that the other woman had her guard down.
Annie froze and pondered for a moment before questioning, âWhy are you asking for so many details?
You sound like youâre really interested in how Paul and I met. I think you should at least tell me why before I decide whether or not to tell you everything, donât you think, Ms. Harris?â
âItâs because my younger sister went missing while working at a farm. It was as if she had vanished into thin air, and she was nowhere to be found. Thatâs why Iâm curious as to where you worked and whether youâve met her.â
âYour sister? Do you have her photo?â
âOf course I do.â
Gwendolyn opened a drawer on the right side of her desk, took out a photo of Evelyn when she was in the entertainment industry, and handed it to Annie.
The latter took the photo and stared at it closely. âYour sisterâs so pretty, Ms. Harris. She looks like a timid little fairy.â
Gwendolyn nodded solemnly. âYeah. She does look like a fairy.â
An ill-fated fairy.
Annie continued to eye the photo.
Then, she remarked with a smile. âThis is so freaky! I think your sister and I look about thirty percent alike.â
Gwendolyn shook her head.
âDo you not think so, Ms. Harris?â the former asked.
âNo, I think you look at least sixty percent alike.â
Annieâs smile widened. âWhat a coincidence! I remember you mentioning your sister the last time, Ms.
Harris, but I never expected to look like her.â
Gwendolyn didnât want to hear such pointless talk and returned to the main topic. âSo, can you tell me which farm you worked at, Ms. Annie?â
Annie tried to recall the past.
âIâm sorry, Ms. Harris. I really donât remember. I have a really poor sense of direction, and itâs hard for me to recall the names of places. I could visit the same place five or six times and still not remember what itâs called. But I can assure you that Iâve never met your sister because if I ever came across someone who looked so much like me, Iâd definitely remember her. Iâd even ask to be friends.â
Gwendolyn observed the ladyâs expression before responding, âVery well. I wonât bother you anymore, and Iâll stop taking your projects with other companies. Iâll also give back one of your projects as compensation.â
Annieâs eyes lit up in delight. âReally, Ms. Harris? Youâll return one of my contracts?â
Gwendolyn nodded confidently. âAs long as you stay in Chanaea for a few more days. I donât go back on my word.â
âThatâs no problem at all. Thank you, Ms. Harris. Anyway, Iâm sure you have a lot of other work to take care of, so Iâll be leaving now.â
Just as Annie got up, something surfaced in her head, and she turned back to Gwendolyn. âHow many more days do you want me to stay for, Ms. Harris? Paul might worry if Iâm here too long, considering heâs in Ospea now. I came to Chanaea on my own.â
âDonât worry. Youâll only have to stay for at most five more days,â Gwendolyn replied understandingly.
âCome back to Harris Group tomorrow afternoon. Thereâs somewhere I want to take you.â
âAll right. No problem.â
Having gotten back one of her projects and restored the goodwill between her and Gwendolyn, Annie walked out of the room looking especially thrilled, the clacking of her heels sounding much livelier.
Gwendolyn maintained a polite smile while watching the young lady leave through the glass door.
Then, her expression turned frosty the moment Annie had disappeared completely.
What a flawless conversation that was! Iâd vote her as Best Actress if all those expressions turned out to be fake.
Gwendolyn pondered to herself. Evelyn didnât have anyone to rely on in the whole of Chanaca.
She has no family or friends here-except for that one person. Iâll take her to meet him tomorrow, and hopefully, some signs will start showing.
