Chapter 557 A Pragmatist Tries Romance
Wooing My Ex-Wife
Jennifer lowered her head and mulled over the issues that Gwendolyn had raised.
Indeed, it sounded like a colossal challenge.
Having gotten used to her relaxed lifestyle, she expected to face some difficulties in acclimatizing to a more hectic schedule, Still, Jennifer loved Honor of Kings and always felt excitement coursing through her veins when she watched professional gamers playing it.
That was why she would gladly take on the role.
Iâll take it slower in my graduate studies. If I canât make it this year, thereâs always next year.
After thinking things through, Jennifer replied determinedly, âIâd like to give it a shot, Gwendolyn. Iâll try my best to accomplish everything youâve laid out.â
âAll right. I trust you.â
Gwendolyn gently patted her face before suggesting, âWhy donât you stay here and familiarize yourself with the surroundings? I need to discuss the investment agreement with some founders of the club.
And donât worry about Treyton; Iâll talk to him on your behalf.â
Jennifer smiled and said, âThank you, Gwendolyn.â
âDonât mention it.â
Meanwhile, after spending some time at Mossey Corporationâs offices in Fairlake, Kieran had become a competent worker across all tasks which Inez had assigned to him.
While he was a medical genius, his intelligence spanned further than the bounds of his field.
Lack of interest had held him back from trying new things. If he had decided to go into business, he could have joined the ranks of the industryâs most talented CEOS.
Out of habit, Inez often glanced at Kieran while he was engrossed in his work.
Having such eye candy nearby certainly lifted her mood.
During one of Inezâs ogling sessions, Kieranâs furious typing abruptly stopped as he completed yet another document efficiently.
He turned to Inez, who hastily averted her gaze and pretended to be staring at her computer.
Kieran, blissfully unaware of her staring, asked seriously, âMay I get off work earlier today, Ms.
Mossey? I have some personal matters to attend to.â
Inez replied, âHave you completed all the work Iâve assigned to you today?â
He nodded in affirmation. âIâve eâmailed everything to you for âOh, okay.â
Inez lowered her lashes, feeling rather crestfallen.your review.â
It appeared that her presence was not included in his request to get off work early.
These days, they maintained the professional relationship between a boss and her secretary at work.
Only after working hours did they address the other facet of their relationshipâa couple who was engaged.
While there was nothing she could do about their forced engagement, it did not mean that Inez had forgiven him.
He swore he would woo me for an entire year and not a day less. If those are nothing but empty promises, then Kieranâs not a decent man. Thatâs how I can test the sincerity of his feelings toward me.
She was so absorbed in her thoughts that she did not notice Kieran approaching her desk.
Inez quickly snapped out of her musings and feigned nonchalance. âWhy are you in a rush to get off work today, Mr. Kieran? Where are you going?â
Instead of answering her question, he rounded her desk and stopped when he was directly in front of her. Then, he leaned closer to her and caged her in with the help of her armrests, which brought his face within inches of hers.
Their proximity caused Inezâs heart to skip a beat. She clung to her nerves and demanded, âWhat are you doing? Who taught you to ignore your bossâ question?â
Kieran smirked and asked, âAre you asking me about my afterâwork activities as a boss or a fiancée, Ms. Mossey?â
Though his tone sounded as cold as ever, his expression took on a sexier, more amorous edge.
Kieran was still studying romance movies diligently and almost knew their content like the back of his hand.
His work paid off. Inez could see a marked improvement in his flirting skills.
She blinked nervously but met his gaze headâon. âDoes it make a difference whether Iâm asking as a boss or your fiancée?â
âOf course.â
Kieran recalled the pickup lines he had seen in the movies, and his smirk widened. He drawled, âIf youâre asking as a boss, I would tell you that my afterâwork activities are private matters, which are none of your business. However, as a fiancée, you have every right to know my personal schedule, and I will absolutely tell you everything Iâm up to, down to the minute.â
âThatâs some lip youâve got on you. Where are you learning these lines from? Youâre getting more brazen.â Despite her grumbling, her expression implied otherwise.
Kieran ignored her words and repeated his question. âSo, is Ms. Mossey or Inez asking about my schedule?â
Inez responded sternly, âWeâre in the office now. Before you officially get off work, youâre still my secretary, so Iâm asking you as a boss. On that note, shouldnât employees be obliged to answer their bosses truthfully?â
Kieranâs brows creased briefly with disappointment. He straightened up and said in an equally serious tone, âI disagree. Anything outside of work qualifies as private matters. I donât think itâs appropriate to inform you about them, Ms. Mossey.â
As Inez struggled to muster a response, she looked up and noticed Kieran headed for the office door.
âStay there.â
Kieran obediently stopped in his tracks but did not turn around.
Despite their engagement, Inez had never called him anything but âMr. Kieran,â even on their dates, which felt distant to him.
Inez continued, âThose are your private matters, but youâre asking to end work early to attend to them.
You should at least give your boss a general idea of what youâre doing.â
He replied vaguely, âIâm going on a date with a woman.â
With a woman? He didnât say it was with me. Who is he seeing?
Displeasure and other confusing emotions filled Inezâs heart. She muttered, âWho are you dating?â
Kieran remained silent. His broad back gave off a frosty air.
âYou know what to do if you want to know my schedule.â
Desire and pride warred in Inezâs mind. Eventually, she conceded and said, âFine. Iâm asking you as your fiancée, Mr. Kieran. Which fine lady are you dating today after requesting an early time off?â
Satisfied with her response, Kieran turned and walked toward Inez, caging her in as before. âNot just a fine lady; sheâs nothing short of a goddess. My date is my fiancée. Itâs your birthday today. Did you forget?â
Inez was stunned.
She did not like celebrating birthdays and had indeed forgotten about her birthday.
âHow do you know my birthday? Did my mom tell you?â
Kieran admitted openly, âMrs. Mossey adores me and is trying her best to marry us off. Plus, back when you were pursuing me, you used to memorize my birthday and phone number, so itâs my turn to do the same.â
Inezâs heart fluttered. It was impossible to resist Kieranâs impeccable looks and flirtatious behavior.
While she remained silent, Kieran took the initiative to switch off her computer. âIâve told Mrs. Mossey about our plans today. Weâre not joining them for dinner or going home tonight.â
He held her hand and continued, âLetâs go, Inez. We still have two hours till work officially ends. Just enough time to catch a movie.â
Inez allowed him to lead her to her feet. She only remembered one thing he had mentioned earlier.
âWhat do you mean weâre not going home tonight?â
He packed her bags quietly and did not reply.
Flustered, Inez stammered, âYâYou canât be thinking of bringing me to sâsome hâhotel, right?â
To her horror, Kieran did not refute her suspicions and said, âWeâre all adults here and are engaged.
Doesnât dating at our age entail dates, meals, and sleeping together? What other agenda can there be?â
Inez was rendered speechless.
After hearing those words, anyone else would have labeled Kieran a pervert if they did not know his personality any better.
No amount of romance movies could displace the pragmatic soul that resided within him.
