Chapter 608
Wooing My Ex-Wife
Chapter 608 Two Choices Cedrick narrowed his eyes as he pondered in silence.
Looking up warily, the officer asked softly, âMr. Jenson, do you want us to bring Mr. Yael here, or do you want to see him alone in his cell?â
Instead of answering that question, Cedrick said, âGot it. Youâre dismissed.â
The officer was stunned.
Huh? Does he want to see Mr. Yael or not? Since he didnât answer me, I suppose he doesnât want to?
âAll right. Iâll be taking my leave, Mr Jenson.â
Once the officer was gone, Cedrick turned his attention to the document Nico had brought him.
It was a newspaper clipping from twenty years ago that had a black-and-white picture of a car accident attached.
A luxury sedan was crushed and ignited in flames. Given the mangled condition of the vehicle that was supposed to be built like a tank, one could imagine the gruesome fate of its occupants.
The news only mentioned the victimâs car. What about the one driven by the perpetrator? Was it a lorry? A bus? Or an ordinary sedan? Thereâs no way an ordinary car can deal such damage to Mom and Dadâs luxury car. Could it be another luxury car that belongs to someone powerful in Chanaea?
Nevertheless, everything was speculation on his part, for he had no evidence to prove it.
He decided to see Yael upon the latterâs request. Yet he wanted to let Yael wait for an hour so that the latter wouldnât get carried away with thinking that he was at his mercy.
At that moment, Yael was leaning against the prison bars of his cell as he waited for Cedrickâs arrival.
However, instead of Cedrick, the one who returned was the officer who helped convey his message.
Stunned by the sight. Yael grabbed the officerâs arm. âWhereâs Cedrick?â
âHe has no time and has a lot of work to do. He didnât say that heâll see you.â
Yaelâs brows furrowed in disbelief. âHow could he not come? Does he not want to know the truth?â
The officer calmly pried his hand away. âMr. Jenson will investigate whatever he wants to know. No one else can tell him what to do.â
Thereafter, the officer walked away from the corridor with his footsteps fading into the air.
Yael slumped to the ground with his back against the wall as a solemn look emerged on his face.
Did Cedrick manage to find a lead? Is that why he doesnât need to negotiate with me anymore?
No sooner had the idea popped into his head than Yael ruled it out.
He took a deep breath. Impossible. Dad would never reveal the secret, and thereâs no way Cedrick can investigate something from twenty years ago. He has no choice but to come to me.
The thought helped Yael to calm himself down. He lit a cigarette and quietly waited for Cedrickâs arrival.
Without any evidence, itâs just a matter of time before he comes to see me.
At that moment, both sides were playing mind games against the other.
One hour later, the doors to the small cell swung open.
Despite the commotion, Yael didnât bother to look up, as he already knew who it was.
âYouâre finally here, Cedrick. And here I was, thinking that youâre no longer interested in your parentâs death.â
Cedrick appeared stern and intimidating in his green fatigues, With his hands in his pockets, he looked exceptionally distinguished. He exuded a frosty aura as he stepped into the cell in his military boots.
An officer placed a chair about ten steps away from Yael.
Cedrickâs lips were tightly pursed. He sat down without saying a word.
After the officer closed the cell door, he instructed all the other guards to move away from the cell so that no one would be able to eavesdrop on their conversation.
Yael sat up straight. Cedrickâs arrival had injected him with the confidence that he had the upper hand.
He puffed a smoke circle in Cedrickâs direction as if to provoke him.
With an icy look on his face and a piercing gaze, Cedrick snapped, âStub out the cigarette.â
âWhy? Iâm not locked in here because Iâve committed a heinous crime. Do the rules say that I canât smoke?â
âMy wife doesnât like the stench of cigarette smoke on me, so stub it out.â
It was an order with no room for negotiation.
Yael snorted in laughter. âFine. Looks like you have a strict wife. I suppose we all have to bow down to authority one way or another.â After stubbing his cigarette out on the floor, he casually threw it aside.
âSatisfied now?â
With an intimidating air, Cedrick looked down at Yael and got straight to the point. âIâve captured Xander.â
Yaelâs expression drastically changed. âWhat did you do to him? Did you send him to the high-security prison?â he asked in a loud voice.
âHis fate is currently the same as yours. Heâs being locked up in a cell within the Federal Bureau of Investigation,â Cedrick replied in an emotionless tone.
The lockup at the Federal Bureau of Investigation was usually reserved for suspects or to detain those who had committed minor crimes.
Although the maximum duration of their detention was fourteen days, most were just imprisoned for seven-
Cognizant of the fact, Yael heaved a sigh of relief.
However, before he could fully relax, Cedrick continue, âThat said, Xander isnât as lucky as you are.
Heâs being locked up with a group of gangsters from Salinsburgh whoâre in there mostly for robbery and rape. His situation is definitely less comfortable than yours.â
âCedrick!â Yael seethed through his gritted teeth. âIf anything happens to Xander, youâll never know the truth about what happened to your parents. Iâll take it to my grave! As for you, youâll become an unfilial son who chose to bungle the opportunity to investigate and seek justice for them.â
Cedrickâs brows furrowed slightly as rage swelled within his eyes.
Rubbing the watch on his left wrist, he kept his anger suppressed and said without showing any emotion, âYou should thank me for just locking him up and not doing anything to him. If you continue to hold the truth from me, I wonât be able to guarantee his safety from those men. You will be the one who turned down the chance to tell the truth and caused Xanderâs death.â
It was clear that Cedrick not only rejected the request to free Xander but also used him to threaten Yael.
Yael ground his teeth, an insidious look flashing across his eyes. âThatâs devious of you, Cedrick.â
With a slight curl of his lips, Cedrick scoffed, âYou seem to think that only you are allowed to dictate the terms, while when I do so, I end up being accused of being devious. Whatâs the point in talking when you keep shifting the goalposts?â
Yaelâs anger raged within his heart. If looks could kill, he would have murdered Cedrick many times over. Nonetheless, having weathered hell and high water, Yael quickly regained his composure.
âI donât believe that youâll harm Xander. You have promised Dad to spare him. Even if you were indirectly responsible for what happened to him, you still broke your promise.â
From the nonchalant look in Cedrickâs eyes, it was clear that he wasnât bothered by Yaelâs words.
âWhatâs the big deal about that? Once Xander is dead, Iâm the only grandson Grandpa has left. He might be angry with me, but it would only be temporary, for Iâm his very own grandson after all.â
Yael was at a loss for words, Cedrick continued, âTo be honest, Iâm sure you know very well that Iâm investigating the matter too. The information Nico provided me has given me a lead. Itâs just a matter of time before I discover the truth.
However, Iâm a busy man. Jenson Group, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and my family take up a lot of my time. Thatâs why Iâd rather deal with this matter in a straightforward manner.â
Yael maintained a darkened expression and refused to submit. Cedrick went on. âYou have two choices before you. Tell me the truth and Iâll let Xander out of the lockup. He will be whipped thirty times and sent to a high-security prison for five years, consistent with what was previously agreed. That will then be the end of the matter. Otherwise, Iâll allow him to be bullied by his cellmates. But donât you worry. If he ends up dying from the torture, Iâll definitely find the culprit and punish him severely. Thereafter, Iâll give Xander a glorious funeral and you the pleasure of watching your son die before you do.â
Cedrick maintained an icy tone as the merciless words rolled off his tongue, As the decisive boss of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, he wasnât going to tolerate anyone behaving cockily in front of him.
âCedrick⦠Jenson!â Yael uttered through gritted teeth.
A smirk emerged across Cedrickâs face as he got to his feet and straightened the collar of his uniform.
He turned around and left without looking back.
Before he was gone, he dropped an ultimatum. âUncle Yael, you have two days to consider. After all, thatâs probably how long Xander can last in his cell considering his constitution.â
