Julian’s Stand-In Wife
Drip.
Noel was in tears.
After going through the ups and downs of a romance, the final words he received were, âA princess and a pauper should never have started in the first place.â
A princess? A pauper?
A painful smile played on Noelâs lips as he picked up the money and rose to his feet, returning to the private room where he had been moments ago.
Upon seeing Ceciliaâs return, Diana thought that everything had been resolved between them.
Without even getting a chance to ask, she heard Cecilia say, âDo they have thick-cut salmon? Iâd also like some drunken prawns.â
She seemed to be in a good mood.
It must have been settled.
Dianaâs lingering concerns were finally put to rest.
As long as they were on good terms again, she had no intention of prying into their privacy. She called the waiter over, and ordered, âBring us some drunken prawns, with the top-grade tiger prawns.â
The waiter glanced at the roomâs number plate and said, âIâm sorry, but this room has been marked as off-limits in the system. You canât place any orders now.â
Diana was taken aback. âOff-limits? Why canât we order?â
Fanny chimed in, equally puzzled, âAre you no longer accepting customers? Out of ingredients?â
The manager entered the room with a smile at that moment and explained, âYou are all friends of our boss, so every signature dish in the restaurant will be served without your having to order. Thereâs no charge for it. Itâs a complimentary service.â
Upon hearing the managerâs explanation, not just Cecilia, but Diana and Fanny were also left in astonishment.
The three of them exchanged glances. âDo you know the owner of this restaurant?â
All three of them shook their heads, giving the same answer. âNo, we donâtâ¦â

It had become a popular spot for hosting gatherings recently, but over this period, they hadnât heard the ownerâs name or had any inkling of who among them might know the owner.
Cecilia was the youngest among the three of them, and often the quickest to speak and the least thoughtful one.
She took a sip of water and asked the manager, âWho is your boss?â
The manager smiled, but didnât provide a name. Instead, he turned around, took a bundle of money from the tray held by the server behind him, and placed it on the table. âThis is for you, Ms. Jarvis. Our boss wanted to return these to you.â
Who owed her money?
Cecilia couldnât react for a moment.
âYour boss owed me money?â
Why did she have no recollection of this?
âItâs not that he owes you money. Iâs the money you just gave to our boss.â
Cecilia was even more confused.
Money she had given?
When had she given money to someone?
Seeing that she had no clue, the manager smiled apologetically. âOur boss also has a message for Ms.
Jarvis.â
Ceciliaâs curiosity piqued. âWhat is it?â
âThe pauper truly isnât worthy of the princess.â
As soon as Cecilia heard this, the color drained from her face, and she turned pale.
She ventured, âIs your bossâ¦Mr. Carter?â
The manager kept a superficial smile on his face, and didnât answer directly.
Instead, he seemed to be intent on leaving as he turned and said, âPlease enjoy your meal. If you need anything, Iâll be here to assist.â
The manager didnât confirm it.
But he didnât deny it, either.
