Chapter 1899: Invitation

Elder Yu and Wen Jiaquan exchanged puzzled glances, asking, “Wait. Does this mean Xi Yue isn’t accepting the invitation?”

Mei Shuhai’s face twisted with anger as he scoffed, “Accept the invitation? Hmph! He merely showed mercy by not beating me to death! In all my years, I’ve never been humiliated like this!”

Elder Yu quickly asked what had happened.

Mei Shuhai immediately embellished what had happened today, ending with a clenched jaw and seething words, “Mark my words—there’s no room in Heavenly Medical Valley for both of us. If he’s in, I’m out!”

As he spoke, Mei Shuhai suddenly raised his volume, his face flushed red with anger. It was obvious just how furious he was.

Elder Yu had a troubled look on his face.

Despite Mei Shuhai’s arrogant temper, his medical skills and teaching abilities were undeniable; he was, without a doubt, the backbone of the outer sect. There was no way they could let him leave over someone as unpredictable as Xi Yue.

Elder Yu cleared his throat and spoke gently, “No need to be upset, Dr. Mei. Weren’t we simply asking you to assess Xi Yue’s character? Since you find him unsuitable, perhaps we should reconsider inviting him as a mentor…”

Before Elder Yu could finish, Wen Jiaquan suddenly interrupted, saying, “Perfect timing with Dr. Mei here. I have something I’ve been meaning to tell you all.”

Just before Mei Shuhai had walked in, Wen Jiaquan had been about to discuss something with Elder Yu, only to be interrupted by Mei Shuhai’s sudden arrival.

Ignoring Mei Shuhai’s words, Wen Jiaquan turned calmly to Elder Yu and said, “I received an invitation from the Bai Family today. They’re inviting both Dr. Mei and me to attend the celebration for Young Master Bai’s first month. I’ve also heard that an invitation has been sent to Xi Yue’s Sumeru Clinic, so it seems she’ll be invited as well.”

As he spoke, he drew two gilded invitations from his robe and placed them on the table.

At the sight of them, Elder Yu immediately stood up, alarmed. “What’s the Bai Family’s intention here? Are they planning to settle scores?”

Mei Shuhai’s face turned pale, and he shouted frantically, “It’s one thing for them to invite you to the celebration, but why drag me into it too? I’m not going—if you want to go, go on your own!”

Wen Jiaquan gave a cold smile and replied calmly, “I’d already planned to go to the Bai Family and apologize. No need for your reminder, Dr. Mei. As for why they invited you as well, I think you know better than anyone.”

“What do I know?! Don’t spout nonsense and accuse me without reason!” Mei Shuhai nearly shouted, practically jumping up in protest, looking every bit like someone caught red-handed.

Even Elder Yu glanced at him with suspicion. Meeting Elder Yu’s gaze, Mei Shuhai barely managed to suppress his fear, forcing a smile as he said, “What I mean is, since Dr. Wen is one of us at Heavenly Medical Valley, we can’t let him face the Bai family’s reproach alone.”

“Besides, if word of this gets out, it’ll damage Heavenly Medical Valley’s reputation. When it reaches the inner sect, it won’t do any of us any good.”

Elder Yu gave Mei Shuhai a meaningful look, thinking to himself that this was the same man who usually relished seeing other doctors embarrassed. For him to say something so reasonable today, there was no way it wasn’t suspicious.
