Chapter Wife 75
The Cherished Wife (Noelle and Charles)
Chapter 75 With a mutual understanding in place, Noelle headed off to bed, her mind at ease. Charles, leftalone, watched her leave and felt his carefully controlled emotions begin to bubble up again. Hewas not Mr. Perfect, but he had bent over backward for Noelle time and again.
His phone suddenly rang, displaying Peterâs number. Charles was caught offâguard. âWhatâs goingon?â Peter, hearing Charlesâs voice, could not resist a smirk. âJust a friendly call to pass the longnight.â
Peterâs voice, edged with a challenge, buzzed through the phone, and Charles squinted his eyes, ahint of suspicion flickering through them. âDid Sean spill the beans?â That had to be it. Peter wasnot the type to ring up in the dead of night without a good reason.
Peterâs tone dropped. âI didnât picture you tying the knot with her. Are you sure about this?â
âOf course Iâm sure,â Charles replied, rising from his chair. His long fingers swept across the desk, tapping it assuredly. âI know what Iâm doing.â
âIf you say so,â Peter conceded. He was not one to poke his nose into othersâ business. âSo, whendo we get to meet her?â He was genuinely intrigued by the woman who had gotten Charles to popthe question. He was not a gossip hound like Sean, but he was definitely keen on meeting this lady.Itâs been ages since we caught up with Steven Fischer too!â
Charles got the hint. Peter was less interested in meeting Noelle and more into luring Steven out.
Charles gave a slight squint. âLetâs play it by ear.â It was obvious Noelle was not ready for the bigreveal. When the timeâs right, Iâll introduce her to the gang.â
âCool,â Peter nodded, then could not resist teasing, âSo, is it true what Sean said? Are you tossingand turning all alone tonight?â He asked with a mischievous grin.
Charles and Peter were not the closest, but they could poke fun at each other. Since they were bothsharp as tacks, they often found themselves in a friendly rivalry. Peter, the master of snark, alwaysplayed by his own rules, while Charles, the more grounded one, was no stranger to getting crafty.
Upon hearing Peterâs words, Charles simply said, âI remember Stevenâ¦â
âCharles, youâre going to lose to me one of these days. Anyway, itâs late and time for bed.â
Peter hung up, and Charles squinted into the night, surprised at how fast Seanâs gossip hadtraveled. Shaking his head, he pocketed his phone, lit a cigarette, and leaned against the balconyrailing, staring into the sparse stars above.
Noelle woke up refreshed and surprised to see it was nearly eight. She scrambled out of bed to getready for the day.
She had expected to toss and turn all night, but instead, she had fallen asleep almost instantly.Maybe it was the relief of solving her problems, or maybe Charlesâs bed was magic. As she driftedoff, she had caught the faintest whiff of lime and a hint of orange, cool and crisp.
Descending the stairs, Noelle was greeted by the scent of something delicious. At the bottom, shespotted an apronâclad Charles emerging from the kitchen with a steaming pot. He saw her too andnodded toward the dining room. âYouâre awake? Howâd you sleep?â
A bit embarrassed, Noelle said, âLike a baby. Thanks for asking!â She stepped down and added,âWhatâs п 1/2 +15 BONUS that amazing smell? Did you make it?â
âYeah, Are you ready for the day?â
She nodded. âNeed a hand with anything?â Just yesterday, she had boasted about not needing amaid and being able to cook, yet here she was, oversleeping while Charles was the one in thekitchen. âYou can wake me up next time. Iâll make breakfast!â
