Chapter 68
Learning Curve
Wednesday February 12th

âI feel compelled to give a toast,â Wendy, the matriarch of the Winslow family, announces as she rises to her feet, her majestically silver bob of hair shining under the overhead lights.
The entire gang is hereâboth the Winslows and the Hayesesâfor the first time ever. All of us, in one house. Weâve been together in parts and pieces ever since the big news first broke, but itâs hard to get this many peopleâs schedules to align. But tonight, weâre all here, Remy having bought Reece a last-minute plane ticket so he could fly home from California yesterday, and thankfully, Wendyâs New York brownstone is big enough to fit us.
âReece, Finn, Travis, Jack, and Willow,â Wendy addresses, âseeing you all here, so young and vibrant, takes me back to when my boys and Winnie were young.â
âHear that?â Jude teases, pointing to the Winslow kids. âWeâre old now.â
Wendy shushes him immediately. âI didnât ask for crowd participation, Jude, but now that youâve mentioned itâ¦yes, youâre old. And so am I!â
Jude laughs, and Flynn elbows him to calm down when he starts choking on spit. Wendy carries on, undeterred. I imagine sheâs pretty used to all their shit anyway.
âIâd be honored if you called me Aunt Wendy, and I want you to know that you always have me in your corner. Iâm always here for you.â She smiles toward each of us.
âAunt Wendy it is!â Trav exclaims, and she laughs.
âThank you, Travis,â Wendy says through a small laugh. âAnd Helen,â she says my motherâs name and looks across the dinner table at her. âI feel like Iâve gained a friend. A friend I hope I get to know more and more as the years go by. A friend I hope knows that Iâm always here for her too. A friend I hope will one day understand the same things that it took me what feels like decades to realize. You are strong. You are beautiful. And you can do anything.â
âThank you, Wendy. That means more than you probably realize.â My motherâs voice shakes, and a sheen of tears shines in her eyes. Sheâs been emotional since I set foot in the door, and she greeted me by wrapping me up in a big hug. The past two nights, weâve had long phone conversationsâthat she initiatedâand Iâm happy to see her taking all of this in for the gift that it is. Sheâs going through a lot right now, and after spending years in an abusive marriage, itâs almost like she has to retrain her brain.
Maybe I should be mad at her for staying in that situation as long as she did, but Iâve never seen my mom as the problem. When she married Jeff Hayes, she had no idea what she was getting into, and once the cycle of abuse started, his ability to manipulate and control was too much for a woman with five young kids. She was a victim like the rest of us, just trying to survive. How can I be angry at her for that?
âLetâs raise our glasses to the Hayes family,â Wendy starts to cheers, but Jude is quick to pipe up again. I have no idea how, but he loves to stir shit even more than Ty.
âAnd what about us, Mom?â he asks with a wry smirk. âYou got anything sweet to say about your actual kids? You know, other than us being old?â
His wife Sophie doesnât hesitate to slap him on the back of the head. âIgnore him. Please.â
âHey now!â Jude retorts on a chuckle. âAll Iâm saying is she couldâve thrown us a bone, you know?â He looks over at Remy, who just stares back at him with annoyance. Then he looks at Flynn, who pretty much does the same.
His sister Winnie immediately says, âDonât even try to wrangle me into your needy bullshit.â
âYeah, Jude,â Ty agrees. âIf you need someone to suck your cock, ask your wife.â The whole house devolves into an uproar, and Jack and Trav share a high five. One thing about putting all ten offspring of that asshole Jeff together is that things are going to get crazy.
âTo the first official Winslow-Hayes Family Dinner Night,â Remy announces, wading into the melee to calm us all down. His wife Maria raises her glass high in the air, and we all follow suit.
I cheers my glass of lemonade with the people closest to meâFlynn, Flynnâs wife Daisy, Jack, and Willowâand allow myself a small moment of wonder.
From where I started to here had a really steep learning curve, but itâs taught me an important lesson Iâll keep with me forever. Hard things are worth it.
âNow, how about some fucking spaghetti?â Jude announces with a big-ass grin on his face. Wendy starts to open her mouth to chastise him, but her words turn into an outright laugh when Jude makes a show of walking the bowl of pasta over to his mom to serve her. âFor my beautiful mother. The best mother in the entire world.â He looks over at Helen. âNo offense, Aunt Helen.â
My mom just laughs, and Ty picks up a piece of garlic bread to toss at Judeâs head. Jude dodges it on a chuckle.
My newest brothers might be middle-aged men, but they still act like kids. Not a single one of them is the uptight, better-than-thou persona I had imagined the first time I found out about their existence.
âYou know whatâs crazy?â Travis questions as he serves himself a giant helping of spaghetti. âJeff Hayesâ¦Jeff Winslowâwhatever you want to call that son of bitchâhe might be a true piece of shit, but somehow, he managed to create incredibly good-looking offspring.â
The sounds of cutlery clanking and people chatting stop on a dime.
âWhat?â Travis holds out both hands and shrugs. âI know Iâm not the only one who sees that the Hayes and Winslow families arenât ugly. I mean, Winnie is beautiful with her blond hair and blue eyes. Flynn could be James Dean reincarnated. Remy might be in his fifties, but I swear, people probably confuse him with Superman. Ty could be Zac Efronâs doppelgänger before his face got all fucked up.â Our mom smacks him in the chest, but he keeps going. âAnd Jude looks like an old Abercrombie and Fitch model from back in the day.â Everyone stares at Travis as he shoves a bite of spaghetti into his mouth and talks around his food. âMy siblings arenât ugly either. Reece is a handsome fuck. Itâs annoying how attractive Finn is. Willow is so pretty that I feel like I spend most of my time beating high school douchebags off with a stick. And Iâm uberhot, obviously, and since Jack is my twin, I guess heâs okay-looking, too. Itâs just nuts, you know? Who wouldâve thought an abusive drunk whoâs in prison for killing a cop could create such good-looking kids?â
When no one responds, Reece lets out a shocked laugh. âBro, I think you mightâve taken that shit too far.â
âHey, I donât have any problem saying the silent part out loud.â Travis just shrugs and shoves another bite of spaghetti into his mouth. âI know Iâm not the only to pick up on that shit. Not to mention, how weird it is that all of our names start with the same letterâby birth order? Remy, Flynn, Ty, Jude, Winnieâ¦Reece, Finn, Travis, Jack, Willow. Itâs fucking strange.â
âTrav, honey?â my mom chimes in, and he looks over at her. âHow about you just sit there and eat your food?â
Wendy lifts a hand to cover her mouth, giggles shooting up from her lungs in the process.
And pretty much everyone bursts into laughter. Iâm not sure if itâs out of actual humor or a coping mechanism. But all of us laugh for a good two minutes straight over Travisâs observations that he probably shouldâve just kept to himself.
âHas anyone heard from the kids?â Daisy asks once our laughter dies down, looking over at her husbandâand my brotherâFlynn. âI feel like theyâve all been gone a long time to pick up some pizza.â
All day, my mom and Wendy have been cooking up a feast of spaghetti, garlic bread, chicken parmigiana, and sides. But when everyone started to show up and they realized how big the family gets when the Winslows and Hayeses are combined, they decided to send my sister Winnieâs daughter Lexi out on a pizza run. Unfortunately, once she agreed to go, the rest of my new siblingsâ kids decided they wanted to join in on the fun too, which is a logistical nightmare because of how many of them there are. Wendy and her husband Howard offered up their Sprinter van for capacity.
Not even five minutes later, Lexi, Remyâs girls Carmen and Izzy, Flynnâs twin sons Roman and Ryder, Tyâs daughter Emily, Winnieâs son and Lexiâs brother Wes Jr., and Judeâs son Hawk and his daughter Meadow all piled into the fucker like the next act on this yearâs Circus tour.
Their ages run from eleven to fifteenâwhich is crazy because theyâre not much younger than Willow.
âHave no fear. I have Life 360 on Hawkâs phone, and it looks like theyâre only a few miles away,â Judeâs wife Sophie says, and Daisy furrows her brow.
âYou only have Hawk on Life 360? Not Meadow?â
Sophie laughs. âHave you met my son?â
âTrue,â Daisy agrees, and Remyâs wife Maria grins.
âI think Rem and I would be in an early grave if we had a Hawk.â
âThatâs because, like Mom says, weâre old as shit, honey,â Remy teases, and Maria nudges him with her elbow. Wendy rolls her eyes. âOr, at least, I am. You, my beautiful wife, donât look a day over thirty-five. I look fifty-fucking-eight.â
âThatâs because you are,â Jude razzes. âYouâre old as shit.â
âYeah, but he ages like a fine wine,â Maria says and presses a kiss to Remyâs lips.
All this open affection is commonplace here, but itâs the opposite of what Iâm used to.
I grew up in a house where the only love that existed was the love my mother gave us. I never saw love between my mother and father. Only anger. Only violence. Only hate. Only fear.
Their DNA is shit, but the Winslows are like a flower finding its way through a crack in concrete. It makes me feel like maybe I can be a flower too.
âHey, Remy,â Maria says, and he looks over at his wife. âDonât you think now is a good time toâ¦you knowâ¦â
He searches her eyes for a long moment, but when realization dawns on him, he nods in understanding. âOh, right.â He stands and raises his glass in the air. âI know Mom just did a toast, but I have some news that I think deserves another.â He moves his eyes to my mom. âHelen, I know Iâm not the only one here who is proud of you for having the strength to leave a man who has affected all our lives. A man who doesnât deserve a single person in this room.â
A few tears stream from my momâs eyes. Wendy sniffles.
âMaria and I know the challenges that you face,â he continues. âWe consider you a part of our family now. And Iâm not sure if youâve realized this yet, but when youâre our family, we have your back.â
âYes, we do!â Jude exclaims. Flynn, Ty, and Winnie all nod in agreement.
âAnd since the man who doesnât even deserve for us to speak his name is behind bars and awaiting a trial that will undoubtedly lock him away forever, we think you deserve a fresh start. A home that you can fill with happy memories and love,â he explains.
âUncle Brad wants his lake house back, doesnât he?â Jude teases, earning a flip of the middle finger from Remy.
âWeâve located a house in Westchester for you and Jack and Travis and Willow. Itâs a nice five-bedroom home, big enough for Finn and Reece if they come home for the summers. Itâs within walking distance to the high school, and itâs only a ten-minute drive to your job.â
âRemy. Maria.â My motherâs head begins to shake back and forth in shock. âW-what are you saying?â
âWeâre saying that the house is yours. Itâs fully paid off and ready for you to move in,â Remy announces, and Maria stands up to hand my mother a small white box with a pretty yellow bow.
My motherâs hands tremble as she opens it, and when she pulls out a shiny pair of keys from the box, tears start to fall from her eyes. âW-what? No. I canât acceptââ
âYes, you can,â Maria says, tears in her eyes now too. âYouâre family, Helen.â
âYes, Helen.â Wendy stands up from her chair and walks over to my mom. âYouâre family. We love you.â
Wendy and my mother hug, and everyone in the room is a mixture of tears, smiles, and outright surprise. Even Travis and Jack have slack jaws and wide eyes, little salty tear trails on their cheeks.
Remy just bought my mother a house. An entire fucking house. Because he wants to help us.
âThank you so much,â my mom says through her tears, and she walks over to Remy and Maria to wrap them up in her arms. âYou have no idea what this means to me. To us. I just donât know how Iâll ever repay you.â
âYou being a part of our family is payment enough,â Wendy says, and fresh tears trail down my momâs cheeks. Willow is crying now too. Iâm speechless.
I never dreamed it could be like this.
The door bursts open, and Roman, Ryder, and Hawk are the first ones to run inside with stacks of pizza boxes in their arms.
âDinner is served!â Hawk shouts at the top of his lungs. But when he sees that the room is filled with people hugging and crying, his feet to skid to a stop. âWhat the eff?â
Roman and Ryder nearly barrel into him, and their reaction is the peak of confusion. âUm, what the hell is going on?â Roman questions, and Ryderâs brow furrows.
âMom?â
âWeâre just happy, sweetheart,â Daisy says, and Ryderâs brow only furrows deeper.
âHappy?â he questions. âThis looks like a scene out of a fucking funeral.â
âRoman!â Daisy chastises through her tears.
âWhat? Whatâd I say?â
My brother Flynn heads over to his twin teenage sons, and he doesnât hesitate to corral them away from the dining room and into the kitchen. Hawk follows along voluntarily with a piece of pizza hanging out of his mouth.
Things may look and sound normal to someone else, but to me, my universe is rattled.
My mom and siblings are safe. My father can no longer hurt us anymore. My family, my support system, has tripled in size.
Iâm not only worthy of love; Iâm capable of giving it.
And one day, Scottie will be ready to receive it. Maybe I need to wait a little less patiently.
