Twilight Sins: Chapter 39
Twilight Sins (Kulikov Bratva Book 1)
As if the prospect of a long-lost sibling reunion first thing this morning isnât enough, Luna is sitting in my kitchen.
All my ghosts are coming back to haunt me today.
I track the curve of her ass in her jeans before I drag my eyes away. This day is going to be far too long already. No need to torture myself with fantasies I donât have time to make real.
I cut around the island and head straight for the caffeine.
âGood morning,â Luna says softly.
I nod without turning around. âYouâre up early.â
âI didnât sleep much.â
That makes two of us. Iâm running on fumes and family duty. I pour myself a cup of coffee and lean against the counter.
Luna is fiddling with the wrapper of a protein bar sheâs barely nibbled on. Off to the right is another plate. Peanut butter toast with bits of crust left behind.
I stiffen as I put two and two together. âYouâve seen her already.â
âWhat?â She looks up and follows my gaze to the plate next to her. âOh. Yeah. She was eating when I came down.â
âBlyatâ,â I curse under my breath. âJust what I needed. Like she doesnât have enough ammunition as it is.â
Luna frowns. âIâm sorry. Hold on. Do you think I met your sister for the first time and immediately started bad-mouthing you? Is that how you think I started my day?â
âMariya would be a sympathetic audience. Sheâs pissed at me.â
âSo am I,â she snaps. âThat doesnât mean Iâd try to come between you and your sister. I actually tried to defend you. Not that you deserve it.â
She tucks a strand of hair behind her ear and I donât think she realizes how much that simple, thoughtless gesture fucking undoes me. I grip the coffee mug so tightly Iâm surprised it doesnât shatter.
âHow did it go?â I ask sarcastically. âDefending me? I bet Mariya ate it right up.â
âOh. Um. Wellâ¦â She tugs on her lower lip with her teeth. âMariya is confident. I can tell you that. Sheâs not shy, either.â
I run a hand across my forehead. âWho did she insult, you or me?â
âBoth of us. Mostly me, though.â Luna laughs. âApparently, I need to get rid of my jeans.â
A thought blares in my head, completely unasked-for: Iâll rip them right off you if you just say the word.
Out loud, I say, âI should have warned you she was here, but she got in late.â
âAfter you unlocked my door?â
I nod. âIf Iâd known she was coming, I might have locked you both in. Would have made my life a lot less complicated.â
Suddenly, a fork bounces off my chest and clatters to the floor. Luna is biting back a smile. âThatâs not funny.â
âWho says I was joking?â
Luna toys with her protein bar a bit more before she gets up and drops it in the trash can uneaten. She leans her hip against the counter and crosses her arms. Itâs a fight not to drink in every inch of her. âWhat are you going to do?â
Iâm not going to close the gap between us and lift you onto the island, spread your legs, and fucking devour you, thatâs for sure. That would be a terrible, terrible idea.
Although, on the other handâ¦
I might.
I grit my teeth and force myself not to move. âSending her back to live with my mother isnât an option. Sheâs almost eighteen. It wonât be long and she could come here without our motherâs permission, anyway.â
âFor what itâs worth, I can tell she likes you.â Luna shrugs. âOr, she wants to like you, anyway. As much as a teenage girl can like her older brother.â
âSheâll like me less when I sit her down and explain the conditions under which sheâll be allowed to stay here.â
âSheâll thank you later. Even if itâs hard now, sheâll see one day how much you must have cared about her to make that tough choice.â Luna slides closer. âYou are willing to let her hate you just to keep her alive. You have to care about someone a lot to do that for them.â
Luna isnât just talking about Mariya here. Her eyes are on me, wondering what Iâm thinking. Part of me thinks she knows Iâm still hearing the echoes of her moans from the last time we fucked.
Everyone in my life needs something from me right now, but Luna is trying to help. Sheâs offering support. The fact that I want to lean into is reason enough to back the fuck away.
So why canât I back away?
Luna is still staring at me when someone clears their throat. We both look up and see Nikandr smirking in the doorway. âGood morning, you two.â
Lunaâs cheeks flush pink even though we werenât doing anything. Nikandr will never believe it, though.
I top off my coffee and elbow Nik towards my office.
âSorry to interrupt your little moment,â he whispers, too loud by half.
âYou didnât interrupt.â I shove him down the hall. âYou were late.â
Nik walks back through my office door like heâs just been to war. His usual perma-smile is gone. He flops down into the chair across from me and sighs. âWell, shit is fucked.â
âYou were talking to Mariya for thirty minutes. If you donât have more to say than that, then youâre fired.â
He frowns. âIâm family. You canât fire me.â
âI can do whatever the fuck I want.â I lean back in my seat. âTell me what she said.â
âShe didnât say much. It was more about the way she said it.â
âFor fuckâs sake,â I spit, âthis was useless. I should have gone to talk to her.â
Nikandr volunteered to have a chat with Mariya first. He figured she would listen to him and open up, and I was happy to let him try. He clearly wasnât up for the task.
He throws his hands up. âIâm not a fucking therapist, okay? All I know is sheâs going through something. Do you think it could have anything to do with Otets?â
I grimace. All of this has to do with our father.
âHe died five years ago. This is something else.â
âOkay, fine. So is she going to stick around long enough for us to figure it out or are you shipping her back? Because I have to tell you, I think she really might make a run for it if you try to put her on a plane.â
âWith Gustev prowling around, Mariya going missing is the last thing we need.â I shake my head. âThere isnât another option. Mother canât handle her and sheâs naive enough to run off and get hurt if we force her out.â
âSo she stays,â Nik concludes.
I squint my eyes at him. âWhat in the fuck are you smiling about?â
âI think itâs nice,â he says with a shrug. âAll of us are finally back together. Itâs been a long time.â
âFor good reason. You know it isnât safe for her here.â
âIâll keep an eye on her,â he says. âAnd we can assign her some guards. Sheâll be fine. Weâll all get to know each other again.â
âOne big, happy family reunion,â I mumble.
âOne big, happy family and Luna,â Nik adds. âIt could be nice to have her feminine energy around. For Mariya⦠and for you.â
I hit him with a warning glare. âIt would be better for everyone if they didnât see much of each other. Luna will be gone soon anyway.â
The last thing I need is Mariya getting attached to Luna the way everyone else in this fucking house seems to be.
Nik snorts.
âIf you have something to say, say it,â I snarl.
âI have nothing to say. Iâm just wondering when the two of you are going to admit that there is something more going on between you.â
One of us already has.
Luna is falling in love with me.
Every time I look at her, the thought rings through my head. I canât get rid of it.
But it doesnât mean anything. We arenât dominos. She may have fallen, but she doesnât get to take me down with her.
