Twilight Sins: Chapter 48
Twilight Sins (Kulikov Bratva Book 1)
Itâs barely six in the morning when I step into the hall, but thereâs already light coming from under Mariyaâs door. Or, still light coming from under her door.
Jetlag hit her hard the first few days, but sheâs adjusted back to the stereotypical teenage circadian rhythm just fine. Up all night, sleep all day, rinse, and repeat.
I planned to talk to her about what happened yesterday with the scrawny waiter in the alley some other time. Preferably once Iâve scrubbed the image from my mind. But Iâm feeling more patient now than normal, so itâs as good a time as any.
I open the door. Sheâs lying on her bed, her phone perched on her bent knees. She doesnât move except for the flick of her eyes to the door. âI could have been naked.â
âYou arenât.â
âI could have been, though.â
âThen lock your door if you donât want people barging in.â
She arches a brow, looking every bit like our mother. âOkay. Leave and Iâll make sure I lock it next time.â
Iâve survived assassination attempts. Iâve killed men armed to the teeth with my bare hands. A teenage girl is not going to be the death of me.
But she is sure as fuck going to try.
I close the door behind me and cross my arms. âWe need to talk.â
âUninterested,â she drawls, never taking her eyes from her phone.
Luna told me to be gentle with Mariya. To spend time with her.
I think Iâll get through to her in my own way.
I cross the room in two steps and swat her phone onto the floor. âIt wasnât a question.â
That draws her attention. She glares up at me, her chin jutted out.
âIf youâre going to stay here,â I continue, âthere have to be rules.â
âNo joy, no fun, no life,â she says, ticking the list off on her fingers. âI already know the rules.â
âMaking out with some slimeball fucking busboy in the alley isnât a life, Mariya. Itâs not âfun.â Itâs trashy and fucking dangerous.â
âSays the guy who let Luna move in after one date.â She rolls her eyes. âDouble standard, much?â
I grit my teeth. âYou arenât me. Iâm an adult.â
Iâm the leader of a Bratva. I hold your entire world together.
âAnd what the fuck am I?â she snaps. âIâm almost eighteen. Iâm not a kid anymore, Yakov. I know itâs been a long time since weâve seen each other, but Iâve grown up.â
As if I need the reminder. The last time I saw Mariya, she had glitter streaks in her hair and a stuffed frog she kept in the center of her bed.
I look around the room and see the ratty green frog slouched on her bookshelf. A lot has changed, but not everything. Not the important things.
I take a deep breath and turn back to her. âItâs not about whether youâre still a kid or not, Mariya. Itâs about keeping you safe.â
âAnd what if I donât trust you to keep me safe?â
âThen get on a fucking plane and go back to live with Mother,â I spit. âIf youâre going to live in this house, youâre going to follow my rules.â
She crosses her arms and flops back against the upholstered headboard. âIâm not agreeing to rules before I know what they are.â
âIf you leave the house, someone goes with you. Always. I donât care if itâs me, Nik, a guardâsomeone has to be with you at all times.â
âI object.â
I shake my head. âYou donât get to object.â
âYes, I do!â she cries out. âIâll follow your rules, but Iâm not going to sit at home the way you make your girlfriend. I have a life outside of this house. I wonât be caged.â
âLuna isnât caged.â
âShe is always here. Youâve isolated her from everyone and everything. Sheâs alive, but at what cost?â
My molars grind together. âLuna just went out last night.â
Mariya frowns. âShe did? I thought she was in your room all night.â
âNope. She went out.â
âWith who?â she asks quickly.
âWho the fuck do you think? Me.â
Her eyebrows raise. âYou took her out? Like, on a date? I didnât think you were capable.â
âYou donât know anything. You havenât even been here.â
She narrows her eyes. âThrough no fault of my own, may I remind you. But I donât need to have been here to know whatâs going on. The staff isnât afraid to gossip in front of me. The maids are all talking about how Luna is the first woman you have ever brought home. I donât know if thatâs more sweet or sad.â
âItâs neither. Itâs my business. Itâs also not the fucking point.â
âThen please, for the love of God,â she whines, âget to the point!â
I grit my teeth and count to ten so I donât succumb to my temptation to throw Mariya in the dungeon for the duration of her stay here. âYou said you want to be treated like an adult. Well, hereâs your chance. Get your shit together, follow my rules, and prove to me that youâre ready to make adult decisions.â
âYes, sir.â Mariya lifts her fingers in a salute and then rolls her eyes.
Iâve snapped femurs for less disrespect than that, but itâs as good as itâs going to get. Itâs better than âyes, Father,â so I count it as a win.
I leave and pull her door shut behind me.
Nik is standing in the hallway, his shoulder resting against the wall. I told him to be here first thing in the morning to talk about what to do now that Iâm greenlit. I figured he wouldnât get here until closer to sunrise.
He takes one look at my face and winces. âParenting got you down?â
âIâm not her parent. Iâmââ Shit, I donât know what I am anymore. âIâm keeping her safe.â
âIf she follows your rules,â he warns. He peeks over at me. âDo you think she will?â
Behind me, the lock on Mariyaâs door clicks into place.
I sigh. âI really fucking doubt it.â
