Twilight Sins: Chapter 50
Twilight Sins (Kulikov Bratva Book 1)
The back of the restaurant is dark. The light above our table flickers every couple minutes, but otherwise, weâre dealing in shadows.
Itâs the way I planned it.
When Boris walks through the door, he doesnât even see us at first. He sits down on a bench in the waiting area before he finally spots us and makes his way through the grid of tables.
âFucking useless,â Nik mutters. âHe should know weâre here. I would have been surveilling this place for hours before the meeting. I was surveilling it for hours.â
âWhich is exactly why I didnât,â Boris booms as he approaches, clapping Nikandr on the back. âEver heard the phrase âwork smarter, not harderâ?â
Nik scowls at him. âYour brothers are the reason we had to drive an hour north to have a meeting. If anyone shouldâve been standing watch, itâs you.â
Boris unwraps a fork from the table and picks at the space between his two front teeth. âHard for me to get you all the information you want if Iâm stuck on guard duty. I ran some errands for Akim to cozy up to the boss. Now, Iâm here. There wasnât time. So again, thanks for looking out.â
âI donât even know why weâre here,â Nik says. He turns to me. âI already told you Akim greenlit you.â
âYou did. And then I found out your source wasnât sure where the hit came from,â I grit out.
Itâs safe to assume Akim is behind the hit, but Iâm not going to risk my familyâs safety on a hunch. I want it in stone before I decide what my next move will be.
Boris clicks his tongue. âYou always gotta verify your information.â
âIs that why you didnât warn our father there was a hit out on him?â Nik hisses. âToo busy âverifying?ââ
âNik,â I warn.
Boris shakes his head. âItâs alright. Nikandr doesnât like me. Thatâs alright.â
âYou worked for the previous pakhan of the Gustev Bratva. You were there when they planned our fatherâs assassination. A heads-up would have been nice.â
âIf I was on your payroll at the time, I wouldâve warned you. But,â he shrugs, âmy loyalties were elsewhere.â
Nik snorts. âWherever the pockets are deepest, thatâs where youâll find Boris.â
âWhich is why Iâm here,â Boris says, an uncharacteristic scowl on his face. âAt great personal risk to myself, I might add.â
âYouâre being paid just fine for your âgreat personal risk.â Get the fuck outta here withâ ââ
âStop wasting my time with a pissing contest,â I bark. âBoris, are you here to confirm or deny?â
Boris dips his head in apology. âConfirm.â
âBig fucking surprise,â Nik mumbles.
Boris ignores him. âI overheard Akim putting out the hit. He wants you dead even if he isnât the one to do it.â
âBecause he canât do it. He knows heâd never survive the attempt.â I shake my head. âHeâs a fucking coward.â
âA coward with a wide network of people desperate enough to take the money heâs offering.â Boris glances over his shoulder. âI wouldnât be wandering around the city if I were you.â
âThatâs why you arenât me. Akim Gustev isnât going to scare me into hiding.â
Boris holds up his hands. âYouâre right. Iâm here to give information, not advice.â
âSo far, you havenât told us a single thing we didnât already know,â Nik growls. âIf you donât have anything new to say, we should end this before weâre spotted.â
âWe wonât be spotted thanks to all your surveillance.â Boris winks at Nik, which only enrages him further. âAnd I do have something else.â
âThen say it now,â I spit. âIâm done here.â
âThereâs a woman,â Boris says.
Nik frowns. âWhere?â
âOn Akimâs hitlist. Thereâs a woman.â
âWho?â I ground out.
Boris leans back and shrugs. âI donât have a name, but it must be some bitch who rejected him. Akim isnât low enough to go after women.â
âExcept he already has,â Nikandr spits. âAkim went afterâ ââ
âYou donât have a name?â I ask, cutting Nik off.
Nikandr is right not to trust Boris. He followed the money to us, which means heâll turn his back the moment he gets a better offer. Iâm very careful to ensure that Boris never knows more than I want him to.
Boris shakes his head. âNo name yet. I donât think itâs a big deal, though. He wouldnâtâ ââ
I scrape my chair across the tile floor. âWeâre done here. Wait ten minutes before you leave.â
I step onto the sidewalk and Nikandr is at my side immediately. âYou think Akim has put a price on Luna?â
âOr Mariya.â
âShit,â he hisses. âShould I call them?â
âTheyâre at the mansion watching movies. Theyâre safe.â I hear myself say it, but the words donât sink in. They wonât stick until I see them alive and breathing inside the walls of my mansion. âStay here and watch Boris. Make sure he does as I asked and doesnât talk to anyone else.â
Nik will keep eyes on Boris while I haul ass home and check on Mariya and Luna.
âYou donât trust him?â Nik asks.
I laugh bitterly. âI donât trust anyone.â
