Twilight Sins: Chapter 64
Twilight Sins (Kulikov Bratva Book 1)
âDo you want to hit up The Rouge Lounge, brother?â Nik asks as he throws open my office door. He pauses in the doorway and looks around. âWhat the hell happened?â
Iâve been in my office for two days straight, but I look around the room with new eyes. It could certainly be tidier.
âIâve been working in here.â
âAnd sleeping in here, too, by the looks of it.â He eyes my pillow and blanket strewn across the sofa. âThings between you and Luna still on the rocks?â
âThis has nothing to do with Luna.â I snap. âIâll clean up when Akim is dead.â
Because once Akim is dead, Luna will be gone. Then I can walk around my house without the fear that Iâll slip and accidentally find my dick deep inside of her.
Itâs been days since Iâve seen her and I feel the distance. I thought the ache for her would fade, but apparently, itâs going to get worse before it gets better. Right now, even the thought of touching Luna has me semi-hard.
âSpeaking ofâ¦â Nik kicks my office door closed and slides his phone across my desk. âHereâs an article about The Rouge Lounge.â
âWhat the fuck is that?â I scroll through the article, stopping as soon as I see a familiar name. âAkimâs club is finally opening.â
âIn two days,â Nik confirms. âAt the bottom of that article, he tells the interviewer that he is going to be standing outside the front doors the entire night, personally welcoming guests inside.â
âHe might as well paint a bullseye on his back.â I toss back Nikâs phone. âItâs the perfect time to strike.â
âThere are going to be a lot of people there.â
âEnough that we can slip into the mayhem without anyone seeing a thing.â I drum my fingers on top of my desk, thinking. âWe have to be smart about it, though. If we march up to the club with an army, Akim will see it coming from a mile away.â
âWe could set up a wider perimeter and minimize how many people go in.â
I shake my head. âA perimeter is still a risk. Akim will be watching everything leading up to the opening.â
âWhat do you suggest then?â
âYou and me. Thatâs it.â
Nikâs eyes widen, excitement coursing through him. âWeâre making this hit ourselves?â
I canât imagine sending anyone else in my stead. Not after everything Akim has done to my family. It needs to be me.
I nod. âWe go in alone and we tell no one. The more people who know the plan, the more likely it is that Akim gets a heads-up. If he does, that fucking rat wonât show his face again anytime soon. Itâll be months before we get another good shot at him. Which is why, when we take this one, we wonât fucking miss.â
Nik stands up. âIâll do as much recon as possibleâexits, entrances, security, the surrounding area. The more we know, the cleaner this kill can be.â
âGood. Meeting with Akimâs dealer and finding an in that way can be a backup, but for now, we focus on a hit two days out.â
âTwo days out.â Nik grins, shaking his head. âFucking finally.â
I try to share in his excitement, but I canât quite get there. I never thought killing Akim would be bittersweet, but now, itâs tangled up in Luna leaving. Once heâs dead, there wonât be any reason for her to be here. Sheâll leave and this house will go back to the way itâs been since my father was killed.
Quiet.
Lonely.
Suddenly, the door to my office flings open and Mariya is standing there. âFamily meeting?â
On second thought, maybe it wonât exactly be quiet and lonelyâ¦
âBratva business,â Nik corrects, trying to push the door closed. âGet out.â
Mariya squeezes through just in time. âIâm Bratva.â
Nik snorts. âBeing part of our family doesnât make you a soldier, little sister.â
She sticks her tongue out at Nik. âI deserve to know whatâs going on.â
Nik opens his mouth to argue, but I wave him off. The two of them could go back and forth for hours. We donât have that kind of time.
âDo what you need to do,â I tell him. âIâll handle this.â
Nik slips through the door and Mariya turns to me. âIâm not a âproblemâ that needs to be âhandled.ââ
âIf that was true, you wouldnât be here right now.â
âI want to know whatâs going on.â
I shake my head. âItâs safer for you if you donât know.â
âNo. Nuh-uh.â She perches on the arm of the chair Nik was just sitting in. âI didnât know anything last week and I snuck out of the house and got kidnapped by a pedo. I think weâve learned that itâs safer when you keep me in the loop.â
âNo,â I grit out. âWeâve learned itâs safer when you donât fucking sneak out of the house.â
âI wouldnât have snuck out if anyone in this house treated me like an adult! You all act like Iâm some little kid. Iâm not. When Dad was killed, I was kept in the dark. No one told me we were in danger. Even afterward, I didnât know what happened.â
Mariya watched our father die. Nik tried to keep her back, but she fought her way towards where our father was dying in my arms. She saw it all. I never talked to her about it afterward because sheâd already seen enough. Why relive it again and again?
She leans forward, eyes pleading. âIf weâre in danger, Yakov, I deserve to know.â
âWeâre one of the most powerful crime families in the world, Mariya. Weâre always in danger.â
She throws up her hands. âSo thatâs it then. I sit at home while you and Nik run around and risk your lives. How come I never get to have fun?â
âBecause you think my job is fun,â I snap. âIt isnât, Mariya. Everything Iâm doing is to keep you safe.â
âAnd Luna.â
Her name snags in my mind, catching my train of thought. âWhat?â
âMe and Luna.â She arches a brow. âYouâre keeping us both safe, right?â
I roll my eyes. âRight. Sure. The bottom line is, the best thing you can do is stay home and stay out of trouble. Not chasing you around the city to save your ass makes it a lot more likely that Nik and I come home alive.â
She crosses her arms and slouches down in the chair. âIâm old enough to have a job.â
âYou want a job? Fine. You can⦠You can watch Luna.â
âI have been watching Luna,â she mutters, âbut since I donât have a fetish for vomit, it hasnât been great for me.â
I sit up. âWhat the fuck does that mean?â
She shrugs. âLuna has been getting sick a lot.â
âI didnât know she was sick.â
Hope hasnât said anything. Nik didnât mention anything, either. If she was really sick, Iâd know. Wouldnât I?
âItâs probably all of the stress. Keeping us both in the dark doesnât keep us safer; it makes us anxious.â
Luna is sick. Luna is sick and I didnât notice.
Itâs not like Iâve been around. I havenât seen her in days, except for the glimpse I caught of her in the garden yesterday. As soon as I saw her flash of golden hair bobbing between the foliage, I closed the blinds.
âYou arenât getting sick, are you?â I ask.
Mariya arches an eyebrow. âPlease. I grew up in this world. I have a stronger stomach than that.â
âHow often is she throwing up?â
âIâm not keeping track. Iâm not a doctor,â she says. âIf youâre so worried, why donât you go talk to her?â
I want toâthatâs the problem. I canât risk the distraction, especially now that weâre so close to taking out Akim. I need to keep my head clear. But even when Iâm not seeing her every day, sheâs in my fucking head.
Itâs why I know Iâm doing the right thing. Cutting her out is harsh, but itâs for the best.
âIâm not a doctor, either.â
âYouâre the reason sheâs sick, though!â
âShe isnât sick because of me. Sheâs sick because she canât handle this world. She doesnât belong here.â
Another piece of evidence that I should send Luna back to her old life as soon as possible.
Mariya shakes her head. âYou donât really mean that.â
âYou have no clue what I think.â
âIf you really thought that, then you wouldnât be hiding in your office because youâre afraid to see her. After everything youâve put her through, the least you could do is talk to her.â
I fire back, âIf you really think Iâm the reason sheâs sick, you should want me to stay away from her. Thatâs the solution here.â
Mariya sighs and turns for the door. âYou may call all the shotsâbut sometimes, you are really fucking clueless.â
She leaves the door open behind her.
After a few seconds, I get up and slam it closed.
