Read My Lips

Chapter 6

At school the next day I got more stares than normal. Trying my best to ignore the stares, I kept my head down and hurried into school. On my hurry into the building, I smashed straight into someone's chest causing me to fall to the floor with a thud.

I lifted my head to see who I had smacked into. It felt like my heart had frozen in my chest.

Luke stood there grinning down at me, his eyes staring straight into mine. My eyes, however, moved to focus on his lips. "Well, well, well, look who it is."

Amy, who was draped over his arm, smirked. "Where's Zach today?"

I ignored her and pushed myself up from the floor. Turning away from the pair, I attempted to walk away when a hand gripped my arm and twisted me back around.

"I said, where's Zach today?" Amy repeated, keeping her rough grip on my arm.

Attempting to pull my arm away from her hand, I tried my best to look unfazed. "I not know, now let go."

Her grip only tightened on my arm as she glared down at me. "You should know, I mean, you've been spending a lot of time with him."

"That not mean I know." I hissed, trying my best to pull my arm from her grip. She was really annoying me now and Luke was just stood there with a stupid smirk on his face. Nothing could describe the hatred I had towards these two.

"What? I can't understand you?" She taunted. Amy finally let go of my arm and pushed me away from the pair. "Can you rep-"

Amy abruptly stopped what she was saying and her eyes widened as she stared behind me. Turning my gaze to Luke, he was doing the exact same. Slowly, I turned myself around to see what they were staring at.

There stood Zach with Ryan beside him. The pair stood there with their arms crossed against their chest.

"What's going on here?" Zach demanded a glare on his face as he stared at Luke. His glare was freaking scary.

I turned back around to face Amy and Luke so I could see if they replied. "N-nothing... I mean... We were just... I..." Amy stuttered.

Once again, I span around to face Zach and Ryan.

"There better not be. Now get going. If I see you two near Maisie again, I swear to God, I won't hesitate against anything." Zach spat. He reached forward and grabbed my arm, pulling me towards him and against his chest.

My heart shouldn't have been pounding as much as it was right now off his gesture. Not in a situation like this.

I assumed Amy and Luke left because Zach turned his gaze to me and his face softened. "Are you ok?"

No words left my mouth so I just nodded, unable to reply to him. His smiled softly at me and pulled me into a tight hug.

And I swear at that moment my heart stopped beating. After a moment of standing there frozen whilst he hugged me, I slowly bought my arms up to wrap around his waist. I pressed my face into his chest and breathed in his scent. He smelt so nice.

Eventually he pulled away and smiled at me before looking to his left. I followed where he was looking, my gaze landing on Ryan. I completely forgot he was here.

"Aw, you guys are so cute!" He grinned bringing his hands up to his face.

I stared dumbly at him. What the hell?

Zach reached his hand out and smacked Ryan across the back of his head. "Shut up you fool."

Looking shocked, Ryan dropped his hands from his face. "Gheez, you try to be nice and get that," He muttered, shaking his head. I kept my eyes focused on his lips. "I'm going to go find Dan. At least he won't hit me."

With that he walked away. I stared after his retreating figure when I felt a hand on my chin and my face was moved to look up at Zach.

"What happened?" He asked me with a serious expression.

I really wanted to tell him why they were doing that to me. Why everyone laughed at me. But by the looks of it, he didn't know I was deaf and I wanted to keep it that way. It was nice having one, well three, people at school who didn't know what was wrong and treated me like a normal person.

I didn't want to risk telling Zach and him thinking differently of me and then treating me differently. I liked the way he already acted around me.

But at the same time, I wanted to tell him before someone else did. What if it hurt him that someone else told him something that should have been up to me to tell?

Then there was the chance that he already knew. That he knew I was deaf and it didn't bother him so he treated me normally and never brought it up.

Fingers snapped in front of my face snapping me out of my thoughts. "What's wrong?" Zach asked.

"Nothing, I just thinking." I smiled up at him.

"Are you sure?" He asked, a concerned look on his face. It was cute that he cared about me. I liked it. A lot.

"I sure, let go." I grinned, grabbing his arm and turning around dragging me with him. Whether he talked to me again, I don't know. But I continued dragging him with me anyway.

Once again at lunch, I was joined by Zach, Ryan and Dan. It was kind of becoming a routine. I'd be sat at the back of the room, by myself, minding my own business and the three of them would arrive and join me. Depending on Ryan's mood, sometimes it would only be me and Zach.

It was nice though. Not that I'd ever tell the trio, but I loved their company. I loved having someone I could spend my lunch time with.

"So, what happened with Amy and Luke this morning?" Ryan asked after gaining my attention. He shoved a fork full of his lunch in his mouth whilst he waited for my reply.

"Er, I not know. She just a bitch." I simply replied. They didn't know I was deaf yet (which was incredibly surprising) so making up that excuse seemed like the best reply. Amy was a bitch anyway so it would make sense.

Ryan looked at me strangely. "Really?" He asked. He didn't seem convinced by my reply.

"Yep." I said simply whilst popping the 'p'. I looked down at my lunch and proceeded to eat so I wouldn't know what they were saying.

Something shoving my shoulder made me exchange my attention from my lunch to Zach who was sat beside me.

"You're in a daze." Zach laughed. He moved his chair closer to mine and slung his arm over my shoulder.

"What you doing?" I asked staring at him, my eyes wide. Why was he putting his arm around me?

He grinned down at me, his eyes gleaming. "What does it look like? I'm putting my arm around you."

I'm assuming one of the other boys said something to him because he turned around and said something back. However, because of the angle he was at, I couldn't see his face to read his lips.

Turning around to face Dan and Ryan, all I saw was a successful smirk on their lips; which only made me more confused. Confused, I turned back to face Zach but he was still glaring across at the two other boys.  I shrugged my shoulders before continuing with the rest of my dinner. Zach's arm still slung over my shoulder as though I was his own arm rest.

I kept a check on the time so I would know when the bell went for next lesson. Roughly five minutes before the bell went I stood up from my seat but a hand grabbed my own. Looking down, I found that Zach had now gripped my hand.

Placing my gaze on his lips I stared at them waiting for his reply. "Where are you going?" He frowned.

"I going to lesson. I leave five minute early." I stated, pulling my hand from his and grabbing my tray.

Awkwardly, he ran his hands through his hair then looked up at me. "Do you want me to come with you?" He asked.

"No, it fine. I see you later." I waved at Ryan and Dan then made my way to the other side of the room to place my tray there then walked out of the cafeteria doors.

Next lesson, I had English. I'd always enjoyed English. It was one of those lessons where you could either read as much as you want or you'd be doing writing. I loved doing both of them.

I walked into class and took my seat at the front of the room so I could see what the teacher was saying. My parents had tried to get me to go to a specific school for deaf people but I didn't want that. I didn't want to be treated differently. I wanted to be treated normally, go to a normal school and live like a normal teenager. Being deaf was just the downside to it.

After I'd taken my book out of my bag and put it on the desk, I looked up to the teacher. He began to ramble on about today's lesson when the door opened and in walked Zach. I watched his face in shock. What the hell was he doing here?

"Hi. Err, I got moved into this class." Zach said, handing the teacher a sheet of paper.

I turned to watch my teacher as he read the note. He just nodded his head and pointed to the seat beside me. I watched Zach as he turned around to see where the teacher had directed him to sit. A grin spread across his lips.

Zach walked over to where I was sat and took his seat beside me. He pulled out his own book and pen before turning to me. "So we meet again." He joked.

"Why you in this class?" I asked, cocking my head to the side but keeping my eyes focused on his lips. Again.

Having to look at his lips all the time made me realise how perfect they were. I just wanted to kiss them... no. No, no, no, stop.

He smirked at me staring at his lips before replying. "I requested to be moved into this class." Zach leaned back, putting his hands behind his head.

Once again, I followed his face. "Why?" I asked confused. Why would he want to be moved into the same class as me? I'd been in this school for ages now and he only started talking to me this year.

"I may have found out that a certain pair was in the same class as you so I may have requested to be moved to this class to keep an eye on you." He answered, his eyes trailing to the back of the room where Luke and Amy were sat.

"You didn't have to." I frowned, quickly turning to look at Amy and Luke before turning back to Zach to see if he was going to reply.

"You're right. I didn't have to but I want to." He ruffled my hair before turning around to face the front. I scowled at the side of his head whilst attempting to fix my hair.

We were given a project in English. The project was to create a presentation based on the partner you're working with. Typically enough, our teacher (Mrs Robson) had told us to work with the person who was sat beside us. I just happened to be sat beside Zach.

What would be the chances of him been moved into our class and sat beside me on the day we were getting a project?

"You'll have to do this in your own time. We will spend two lessons of the week based on this project but the other two will be normal class work to prepare you for your exams," Mrs Robson announced as she walked around the room. She was handing out question sheets. She stopped in front of Zach and myself as she carried on. "I am giving you a question sheet. For the remainder of this lesson, I want you to find these out from your partner and this can be classed as part of this been done."

I looked down at the sheet she had placed in front of me. So far, the project seemed fine. The questions were basically just making us find out things such as; their birthday, hobbies, favourite things etc.

I swivelled around in my chair so I was facing Zach more face on. He looked down at me whilst he placed is sheet in front of him.

"Shall I go first or do you want to?" Zach asked. He took off the lid on his pen and writing our names on the top of his sheet.

"Why don't we just do it at the same time?" I asked copying his actions. He nodded his head in reply so I began with the questions. There weren't many questions so it shouldn't take long.

"When is your birthday?" I asked reading the first question off the sheet. Quickly, I looked up to his face just in time to see his reply.

"September 25th. When is yours?" He replied. I quickly wrote down his answer before replying myself.

"February 6th. Er, what your hobby?"

"Um, I like, er, to go on my xbox, and er, sport." He replied looking down. He looked so... uncomfortable? He looked back up to my face. "What's yours?"

"I like to read, go on computer, sometimes but rarely I like watch movies." I answered quickly. All of my 'hobbies' weren't exactly fascinating considering I couldn't do much that involved sound. "What your favourite colour?"

"Hmm, probably blue..." He looked down as he wrote down my hobbies. He then looked up at me like he was expecting an answer.

I frowned at his face as he stared at me expectantly. What did he want?

"I said: what's your favourite colour?" He repeated.

"Purple." I answered simply. Zach wrote my answer down and I wrote his down.

We carried on like that for the remainder of the lesson. When we left the classroom, I walked out with Zach.

"When are we going to carry on with this homework thing?" Zach asked as we stood opposite each other in the corridor.

"We could at tutoring?" I offered, pushing my bag further on my shoulder.

He smiled at me and nodded. "Sure, that works fine. I got to go, see you later?"

"Bye." I smiled back before turning around and walking away from him. I quickly looked back at him to see him staring at me. I awkwardly waved at him then turned back around and speed walked off.

This project was going to be fun to say the least.
