Chapter 64
Broken (Manhattan Ruthless Book 1)
I clear my throat, and Elijah shoots me a concerned look, like he knows Iâm about to toss a hand grenade into the middle of our pleasant dinner.
I direct my attention to Mel and her sister. âI have something I need to speak to you both about.â
Ashley stares at me, her expression full of curiosity, but Melâs eyes widen, and I can feel the anxiety radiating from her across the table. I guess she can still read me better than I thought.
âThere would never be a right time to tell you about this, but itâs something you both need to know.â
Itâs Ashley who speaks. âWhat is it?â
âItâs about your fatherâs murder. The men who were shot by officers at the scene, Wilson and Inglewood, are the men who murdered him, and it was a robbery that went wrong â¦â I run a hand over my jaw. âBut it wasnât an opportunistic crime. Bryce set the whole thing up.â
Melâs hand flies to her mouth, her eyes filling with tears.
âWhat?â Ashley gasps. âHow do you know that? I donât understand.â
âWhen Mel mentioned that Bryce always blamed her for what happened and that it was his idea to go to the beach that weekend, it just didnât add up for me. I asked a hacker friend of mine to look into it. She found out that Bryce owed a lot of money to some very bad people. With no funds of his own left to access, Bryce recruited both Wilson and Inglewood to break into your house.â
Mel speaks for the first time. âNobody was supposed to be home.â
âExactly. They would have had the codes to the safe, and they wouldâve walked away with close to a million dollars. But your dad was thereââ
âBecause of Hayleyâs pool party,â Mel interrupts, and Ashley squeezes her big sisterâs hand.
âBryce couldnât get a message to them in time to call off the job. They were raised by militia, massive conspiracy theorists, and refused to carry cell phones.â
âSo, Dad confronted them and they shot him?â Ashley says, her eyes wide in horrified fascination.
âYeah, the ballistics report suggests thatâs what happened. But even though Bryce couldnât get through to Wilson and Inglewood, he did manage to contact one of his buddies from NYPD, Detective OâGrady, who made sure he was the first on the scene. When OâGrady found Luke had been murdered, he knew that the only way to stop Bryceâs part from being discovered was to kill them both. He triggered the panic alarm, claimed heâd only just arrived when his colleagues got there and that he shot Wilson and Inglewood in self-defense. It was cast-iron.â
Mel simply gapes at me, but Ashley lets out a low whistle. âSo how did your hacker friend get this information? And are you sure itâs reliable?â
âI donât question her methods, but yes, itâs reliable. Iâve seen the phone records between OâGrady and Bryce on the day of the murder. Four calls in the space of an hour, during which time your father was murdered.â
Ashley leans forward, one hand still holding onto her sisterâs. âSo what now? Can Bryce be arrested? Or this Officer Grady?â
âUnfortunately, thereâs not enough evidence to convict Bryce of conspiracy to commit robbery in any court. Wilson and Inglewood are dead. Officer OâGrady was killed about seven years ago. Ironically, he was shot in the line of duty while attending a robbery. And the men that Bryce owed money to, well theyâre not going to cooperate with any sort of investigation and implicate themselves or risk exposing their lucrative racketeering business.â
âFuck,â Elijah mutters.
âRight!â Ashley agrees.
âSo Bryce paid these guys off with our familyâs money as soon as he became the legal executor of Dadâs estate and the CEO of Edison Holdings?â Mel asks, her voice little more than a whisper.
I nod.
âYou know none of this surprises me even a single bit.â Ashley shakes her head, her button nose wrinkled in disgust, but itâs her older sister Iâm more concerned about.
My girl wears her heart on her sleeve, and a full range of emotions plays over her face. Anger. Shock. Betrayal. Her eyelashes flutter, wet with unshed tears. Her fork clatters to the table, and she flees the dining room.
Elijah, Ashley, and I exchange concerned looks.
âIâll go check on her,â Ashley says.
I shake my head, already pushing back my chair. âFinish your dessert. Iâll go.â
Ashley considers me for a second, seeming to wrestle with the idea of letting me comfort her sister, but she nods her agreement after a few seconds.
I find Mel in her room, sitting on the edge of her bed and staring into space. The door is open, but I knock on it anyway. Her head snaps up, and she swats at her cheeks.
âAll I ever seem to do lately is cry,â she says with a harsh laugh. âYou must be getting fed up with seeing me constantly sniveling by now.â
I sit on the bed beside her and bump my shoulder against hers. âI wish you wouldnât be so damn hard on yourself, corazón.â
Sniffing, she shakes her head.
âI know it hurts, but I figured you both should know.â
She presses her lips together and takes a deep breath through her nose. âSeems like the truth always hurts the most, right?â
I tuck her dark hair behind her ear. âNot always.â
She turns and looks at me, her moss-green eyes glistening. âNo, youâre right. Lies hurt much more. Especially when those lies have become so ingrained in your consciousness that theyâre a part of you. They shape the person you are, affecting every decision you make.â
I take her hand in mine, lacing our fingers together.
âHe made me believe that my dadâs death was my fault. I was thirteen years old, and he convinced me that it was my fault.â A heaving sob wracks her body.
I squeeze her hand tighter, resisting the urge to offer to kill him and bury his body somewhere heâll never be found. Iâll leave that for another day. Instead, I let her pour out the hurt festering inside her.
âHe held it over my head every day of my life. It was why I could never cut ties with him. Why I agreed to all of his ridiculous schemes. Every decision Iâve made since that day has been influenced by the belief that my father was killed because of me.â
She scrubs at her cheek with her free hand, and her gaze hardens. âI hate him, Nathan. I fucking hate him!â
Yeah, me too. âYou never have to see him again, Mel. You can cut all ties with him, your mother too, if thatâs what you want. Or you can fuck with them both by taking everything they have. Tell me what you want me to do and Iâll make it happen.â
The way she looks at me makes my heart beat faster and my dick twitch in my pants. âYou really would, wouldnât you?â Her face softens in a faint smile.
Iâd do fucking anything for you. âYou only have to say the word.â
âI donât want anything to happen to them. I donât need that on my conscience. Besides, karma will get them in the end. But I do want to cut ties. I want my name removed from everything to do with Edison Holdings. Can that be done? So I never have to have anything to do with either of them again?â
I frown. Edison Holdings is her fatherâs legacy, and just because Bryce has spent the last seventeen years bleeding the company dry, that doesnât mean itâs irredeemable. âYou sure? Because I can have Bryce removed as CEO, and we could appoint an interimââ
âNo.â She shakes her head. âIâm tired, Nathan. I just want to walk away. From everything.â
Even me? That thought makes me stall for breath, but I donât voice it. What if she said yes? âThen Iâll make that happen.â
Her eyes shine, and she lets out a sigh. âThank you for being such a good man.â
She leans into me, and I wrap my arms around her, resting my lips on her hair. A good man. Iâve never considered myself one of those before. Ruthless in business and in my personal life, Iâve never cared what anyone thought of me, and that has served me well all these years. So why the fuck does her calling me that make me want to do everything in my power to prove her right?
