Vile Boys: Chapter 2
Vile Boys (Spine Ridge University)
Later that week
In class, I can barely focus on what the teacherâs trying to say. I hear his words, but they go in one ear and out the other, and the words on the board in front of me are a jumbled mess in my mind.
I close my eyes to take a breath, but all I see are those piercing gray eyes staring back at me.
I swallow away the lump in my throat and look at my mobile phone to check the time. I feel like Iâm a sitting duck, waiting to be hunted and killed.
I canât stop thinking about what I saw.
Ares saw me. I know he did.
So why didnât he confront me?
He didnât even say a word. Even though I know he mustâve seen my guilt-ridden expression when he brushed that droplet of blood off my face.
Itâs almost as if he was ⦠taunting me.
They killed those two men like it meant nothing.
And now I canât help but wonder ⦠what will those boys do to their only witness?
I scroll down on my laptop, taking in all the information I can find on those boys. Blaine Navarroâs whole existence revolves around some kind of dojo. Apparently, heâs a black belt and teaches people next to his college studies, but I donât know what kind of martial arts or what it even means.
Then thereâs Caleb Preston, whose father is a successful businessman, but in every photo, Caleb looks miserable. And his mother is nowhere to be seen.
âHey, whatâs up?â
The sudden intrusion makes me slam my laptop closed real quick.
Brooke, my friend from a different sorority, sits down beside me. âWait, were you looking at someoneâs profile?â Her eyes glitter with interest.
âNo one in particular. Just some old friends,â I lie.
Her eyes narrow. âSure.â She places her hand on my shoulder. âYou donât have to lie to me. I recognized Caleb Preston.â
My eyes widen. âShhh. Donât say it out loud.â
âWait, donât tell me you have a crush on him?â She makes a concerned face.
Blood drains from my face. âNo.â
She giggles. âI wonât tell a soul, promise.â
âI donât!â
Her smirk only grows bigger. âWant me to introduce you to him?â
âLadies. Keep it quiet, please,â the librarian calls to us.
Brooke hides her face behind her hand and whispers, âOops. My fault.â
âHey guys, care if I study with you?â Kayla asks as she smacks her books down on the table right beside me.
âSure, no problem,â I reply, hoping itâll keep Brooke from asking more questions.
âDonât think weâve met before,â Brooke says, and they shake hands. âBrooke.â
âKayla, Iâm her friend.â
âSame.â Brooke smiles. âWe met at a party during summer break.â
Kayla pulls out a chair. âOh, so youâre the girl who taught her how to drink.â
âOh God.â I bury my face in my hands.
âWhat? Thatâs a good thing.â Kayla bumps into me with her hips. âYou need to relax more.â
âExactly what I said,â Brooke says, getting up and packing her things. âBut anyway, I have a class soon. See you later, okay?â
I wave as she walks off. âSee ya!â
Kayla sits down and opens her books. âYou know, I heard the Phantom Society is having a party soon.â
I put my laptop away. âSo?â
âWanna go together?â
I sigh. I really donât want to put myself in more danger.
She smiles and jerks my arm. âCâmon. Itâll be fun.â
When she puts it like that, itâs hard to say no.
âFine, fine, Iâll come,â I whisper.
âYay,â she says with a grin. But when she glances over her shoulder and spots an angry librarian ready to kick us out, she says, âSorry! Weâll be quiet now.â
Caleb
I chuck my bag on the table in the hallway and make my way to the common room. âMan, Iâm beat.â
âI donât know, Father, figure it out,â Ares barks into his phone before he ends the convo.
I throw myself onto the couch and lean back, snatching some peanuts out of a bowl on the side table.
âWhat was that all about?â
He places his phone in front of him on the table and stares at it for a moment, and I can tell shitâs not going good at all.
âDoesnât matter,â Ares says.
âWell, obviously it does, since youâre already brooding over just one phone call,â I retort, throwing more peanuts into my mouth.
âI ask for help. Once. Just one time. And he gives me shit.â His nostrils flare. âAnd he wonders why I donât wanna come to the family dinners.â He leans back and slams his hands into the armrests of his seat. âFuck.â
âHelp ⦠as in â¦?â
He stares me down with that chilling glare of his. âBodies.â
I swallow my peanuts. âRight. Those.â
âI thought those were already taken care of?â Blaine asks, striding in with flair. âAres?â
âIâm working on it,â he says.
My eyes widen. âWait, donât tell me theyâre still in the freezer outside.â
âWhere I keep my ice cream?â Blaine scowls. âEw.â
âStop complaining,â Ares growls. âUnless you have a better idea.â
âIâll have to throw out that whole tub of perfect chocolate goodness,â Blaine whines, rubbing his forehead.
Ares tilts his head at him. âShall I put the bodies in your bedroom instead?â
I almost choke on my handful of peanuts. âOh my God.â
âOn second thought, you can have the ice cream,â Blaine murmurs, throwing his hair to the side. âMy stomach canât handle all that dairy anyway.â
âFragile,â I joke.
âDarling, I prefer it when my ass doesnât squirt, unlike yours.â
âFuck you,â I retort.
Blaine tilts his head. âYou asked for it.â He winks at me, and we both laugh.
âIs something funny about this whole situation?â Ares asks, all serious, clutching the armrests like heâs going to rip them off. âBecause I donât get it.â
âOh, lighten up,â Blaine murmurs, approaching him from behind. âYouâve been far too tense ever since that party.â Blaine massages Aresâs shoulders. âRelax. Throw it out. Kiss a girl. Fuck it out of your system. And then letâs do what we do best.â
âFuck shit up? Kill people?â I say.
Blaine looks up at me. âWell, I was going to say party, but I guess that could work.â
I throw some peanuts at him, and he catches them with his mouth. âGood one.â
âI know Iâm a catch, darling, thank you,â Blaine muses.
âJesus, youâre so annoying,â I say, laughing.
Ares shoves Blaineâs hands off his shoulders and gets up. âEnough.â
âWhat is going on in that mind of yours?â Blaine asks.
Ares approaches the window, staring out at the front gate. âWe werenât alone that night.â
I stop eating immediately. âWhat?â
âWhen I killed those dudes at the front gate ⦠There was a girl. Just for a moment. But I know she saw me kill.â
I swallow, but my throat feels raw.
Fuck.
If heâs right, this could get ugly real fast.
âA girl from this university?â
He nods, still staring outside like heâs waiting for her to reappear.
âWe actually crossed paths when we went back to the party again,â he adds.
âWait â¦â Blaine narrows his eyes. âThat girl with the beige dress who made you stop?â
Ares turns. âSo you saw her too.â
âI wasnât sure,â he says, folding his arms. âI figured you just got enamored by her beauty. I mean, she did look like an angelic deity in that dress.â
âShe watched us murder two men, and you let her go?!â I shout at Ares.
âWhat was he supposed to do?â Blaine raises his brow at me. âKill her too?â
I wasnât going to suggest it, but now we have an additional liability.
âShe was bleeding,â Ares mutters, rubbing his fingers together like heâs savoring the memory of her blood on his skin. âAnd for some reason, she smiled at me. It threw me off guard.â
My lips part. âSmiled? She smiled? At you?â I snort, biting my piercing. âWhy do I find that hard to believe?â
âDo you think Iâd lie?â he grits at me, making me shut up immediately.
âNo, of course not.â
Usually, girls pretty much run away from him the second he even so much as looks at them. Heâs definitely got this killer aura that rarely anyone dares to come close to. Except maybe a handful of fearless girls who crave it because he has two of the most valued things in this world. Money and a big dick.
But never just because they enjoy his company. So I get why it would bother him that the girl who actually saw him kill two people would smile at him.
âDid you catch her name?â
Ares shakes his head. âBut weâll find out soon enough.â
âDo you think sheâll tell?â Blaine asks.
It takes him a while to answer, but when he does, a chill runs through my veins. âMost definitely.â
âWe gotta stop her,â I reply.
âHold up, if we go after someone from this university, this will not end well,â Blaine says, approaching Ares. âWe cannot risk our already precarious position after those killings here on Tartarus ground. If thereâs another body â¦â
âI know,â Ares replies. âWhich is why Iâll need you two to help me.â
I bite my lip piercing and drag it into my mouth. âYouâre scheming.â
Blaineâs smile stretches from ear to ear. âTell me more.â
Ares throws us a glance over his shoulder. âWe canât kill her. Itâs too risky.â
âBut â¦?â I lean forward, eagerly anticipating his next words.
His eyes flash with excitement. âWe can make her regret she ever looked.â
âOh ⦠make her fear us,â I say, rubbing my hands together. âI like that.â
âBut how do we find her if we donât know her name?â Blaine asks.
âThereâs a party at the Phantom house in a couple of days,â I say.
They both look at me like theyâre wondering why Iâm even mentioning it.
âI saw the girl talk with Nathan the other day,â I add. âThey might be friends. Maybe he dropped her name, and I just canât remember?â
Ares suddenly rushes at me, jabbing his finger into my chest. âPry it out of him.â
âWow. Calm down, darling,â Blaine says, placing a hand on his shoulder. âWeâre all friends here. No oneâs your enemy in this house.â
Aresâs nose twitches, but he does pull away, and I finally feel like I can breathe again.
âIf Nathan invites her, sheâll definitely be there,â I tell him.
âGood.â He grabs his jacket off the chair and throws it over his shoulder. âThen weâll be there too, waiting until sheâs all alone â¦â His fist clenches. âAnd drowning in fear at the thought of crossing us.â
