Vile Boys: Epilogue
Vile Boys (Spine Ridge University)
I stare at my fatherâs grave as heâs hoisted inside. My mother cuddles up to Kai for hugs as she sniffles into a handkerchief. Neither of us says a word.
Not because we have nothing to say but because it wouldnât be positive.
Even if sheâs crying, sheâs probably only mourning the idea of the power he had over this city, not the love he dished out occasionally, like one would throw a bone at a dog.
She swiftly tucks the handkerchief into her pocket and blows out a sigh.
Not one of regret but one of relief.
My eyes flutter up to Kai, who just blinks and nods.
Finally, itâs over.
This fucker has been laid to rest along with the dirt he belonged to.
And I doubt any of us will ever miss his presence.
When the funeral is finished, my mother is accompanied by family from her side, while Kai stays behind with me.
âWho knew a bastard like him could leave such a stain on this world?â I mutter.
Kai spits on his grave, and I look up in surprise. âDesecrating holy grounds already?â
âHe deserves nothing less. Hope he rots in hell.â
I smile. âNah. Thatâs where all the fun people are.â
He smirks back at me. âWherever he is, I never want to follow.â
âYou sure about that?â I tuck my hands into my pockets. âI mean, the Torres company is left without anyone to lead it now.â
âI donât want a legacy built on blood and lies,â Kai answers, tilting his head. âFather wouldâve hated for you to take over.â A filthy smile forms on his lips. âSo how about we give him one final big fuck you?â
Sly little brother.
I shake my head and chuckle. âI knew youâd pull something like this.â
âFuck what Father said. Youâre the smartest, most reliable one of us.â He places a hand on my shoulder. âI mean it. Itâs yours.â
âWhat about Mother?â
âIâm sure sheâs just happy her sons are still alive,â he says. âBesides, Iâm far too busy.â
âWith what? Sex and murder?â
He shrugs, and a dirty grin spreads on his face. âYou, of all people, should know.â
Busy with his murderous girlfriend?
We really are a family of devils.
âLove ya.â He winks. âSee you at school.â
âDefinitely. And donât think Iâll let you off the hook with the Torres company. Iâm going to need extra hands to take care of the mess he left.â
He lifts both middle fingers in the air. âThis enough hands?â
I laugh and shake it off. âLove you too, Kai.â
I gaze at the graves and the lonesome, round-faced girl with blond hair and big eyes sitting behind one of them. She didnât want to attend the funeral, but she still wanted to be here for me, even if only from a distance.
I walk toward her, the pebbles beneath my feet giving my presence away.
But she doesnât move.
âI miss you,â she mutters at the grave, touching the ground as tears form in her eyes.
I kneel behind her and place a hand on her shoulder.
âYou did it,â I say.
She turns to look at me, eyes filled with both sadness and hope. Hope for a future beyond the suffering.
âYou took your revenge.â
The most beautiful, heart-wrenching smile forms on her lips. We both know the duplicitous nature of that smile. How, on the one hand, sheâs overjoyed to end this chapter of her life, while on the other, the guilt of knowing she killed my father will forever stay etched within her soul. âI did.â
But if she hadnât ended his life, mine would have been forfeited.
And I am forever grateful she chose me. Even if it cost my brother and me our own blood.
âIf your father was here ⦠I just know he would tell you how proud he is of you.â
She breathes out a sigh of relief. âThank you.â
Blaine
Weeks later
Crystal sits beside me on the bench beneath the tree in the rose garden and pats her thighs.
âDo we really have to do this?â Ares grumbles.
âYes. Stop complaining,â I reply.
Caleb sighs out loud and lays his head on Crystalâs lap, his legs splayed over my lap and the edge of the bench.
âHow long is this going to take?â Ares asks, sitting on the benchâs armrest next to Crystal.
I rub my forehead. âDo you guys really have such a short attention span?â
Ares folds his arms. âNo one ever asked if I wanted to do this.â
âDo it for me, please?â Crystal begs, looking up at him with those sweet eyes of hers.
She knows just how to wrap all of us around her pretty little fingers.
Aresâs eye roll makes me chuckle. âFine.â
âGreat,â I say. âThen letâs begin.â
âWith what?â Ares asks. âWhat book is this even? Whatâs the genre?â
âRomance, darling.â
âRomance?â both boys say in tandem.
Caleb tries to lean up. âNuh-uh, I ainât reading that shit.â
âNo one asked you to read. Iâm reading it to you,â I reply.
When he moves his legs off, I grab them and place them back on top of me where they were before. âStay.â
âJesus,â he grumbles.
âCaleb, just shut up and listen,â Ares growls at him.
âWhat? Like you donât feel the same way.â
âShe wants us to do this together,â Ares says, throwing his hand over her shoulder. âSo letâs just get it over with.â
âYes. I want us to have more bonding time,â she says, melting my heart.
âYouâre so sweet. Whatever did we do to deserve you?â I say, pecking her on the cheek.
âEnough with the slickness,â Caleb says. âJust start already.â
âChapter one? Or chapter fifteen?â I wriggle my brows.
âWhatâs the difference?â
âThe spice.â
âOh yes, all the spice,â Crystal muses, biting her lip.
âOf course, youâd pick that chapter,â I reply, winking.
âWell, if you want spice, Iâll give you all the spice you desire later,â Ares says, slipping his hand down her shirt. âStart reading, then. Letâs see how far you get before she begs you to put it down and play out the scene instead.â
âOh â¦â A mischievous grin spreads on my face. âNow thatâs a plan I can definitely get behind.â
Caleb
Months later
âSo wait, let me get this straight ⦠first, you tell me you want to be close again, and now youâre dating Crystal and Ares together?â Nathan sloshes his coffee around in his cup.
I shrug and take a sip of my own. âYou make it sound more complicated than it is. And I already told you I wanted to be friends.â
âYou are complicated,â he rebukes.
I snort. âArenât we all?â
âTrue,â Nathan says, taking a sip. âBut I never expected you to succumb to the power of pussy.â
âTakes one to know one.â I wink.
He shoves me. âAlways the fucking know-it-all.â
âHey, Iâm just saying, maybe weâre not so different after all.â
âJust say you miss me,â he retorts.
I tilt my head and pout. âFine. I miss you. Can we be friends again?â When he narrows his eyes, I add, âPlease?â
He sighs out loud. âFine.â
I throw my arms around him. âThank fuck.â
âWatch it!â Nathan yells. âAlmost spilled my coffee on my lap.â
âLike pain ever stops you,â I retort.
âTrue.â He snorts. âBut Iâm normally the one dishing it out, not receiving it.â
âMaybe thatâs why we werenât a good match after all,â I say, winking.
âWhat are you guys talking about?â Crystal says as she sits down beside Nathan.
âOh, nothing, just two bros hanging out,â I muse.
Until I feel a familiar set of hands squeezing my shoulders, making my whole body turn to mush. âA bro that happens to be your ex?â Ares mutters.
âIâm taken. Iâm taken,â Nathan says, hovering off his stool like a bug scared to be squashed.
Crystal snorts from her seat. âI missed this. I missed when we were all just ⦠happy.â
I look at her and feel my heart swell with the need to smile.
I havenât smiled in such a goddamn long time.
But after losing my mother, Crystalâs the only one whoâs managed to bring that smile back to my face. And even now, when I lean in to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear, the blush on her cheeks makes me feel like the world might not end today. Or ever, as long as I have these two with me.
Crystal
âHappy? Those two?â Blaine interjects as he places his hot cocoa on the bar and sits beside me. âDarling, those two donât know the meaning of that word.â
Ares shoves him, nearly making him spill his hot cocoa.
âHey! These are Ralph Laurens, can you not?â Blaine scoffs.
Ares raises a brow. âWatch your tongue, or Iâll force it down his ass next time we have play time.â
Blaine grins with slyness and giggles. âWell, thatâs one way to get me to never shut up.â
âWell, you all seem to get along nicely,â Penelope muses, throwing her arms around my neck. âThe gameâs about to start. Are you coming?â
I look over at the gang. Lana, Felix, Kai, Milo, Dylan, Nathan, and Alistair are all sitting in a circle in front of the fireplace of the cabin we rented while Felix sorts the cards.
âPass,â Blaine mutters. Everyone looks at him. âWhat? Games are not my thing.â
âWhat is your thing exactly?â Penelope asks him.
âBooks. Books. Books. Hmm â¦â He taps his finger against his chin. âBooks.â
âWow, you got yourself an actual book nerd,â Penelope mutters, squeezing my shoulders.
I snort, but Blaine seems offended.
âExcuse me, reading does not constitute being a nerd. Itâs called sophistication. Something your lot obviously lacks, judging by that one over there nearly lighting this whole place on fire.â Blaine stares at Dylan, playing with his lighter near a bottle of rum.
âPoint taken,â Penelope says, laughing it off.
âWhoâs talking about me?â Dylan scoffs.
âNo one,â Penelope yells back.
Felix grumbles as he places a deck of cards in front of everyone. âSIT!â
My brows rise. âIs he always this domineering?â
Penelope laughs. âPretty much, yeah.â
Everyone chuckles a little.
âGuess weâve been summoned.â Penelope snorts before she leaves.
I hop off my stool and sit down with the rest of them while Blaine and Ares drink at the bar and talk with each other.
âWho goes first?â Alistair asks.
âIâll go first,â Kai says, placing down a card.
âThatâs not how it works. We all gotta throw the dice,â Dylan tells him.
âSays who?â Kai retorts, narrowing his eyes.
âI do,â Felix barks. âNow shut the fuck up and play this game like normal people.â
Everyoneâs quieted.
âYay for no more fighting,â Milo murmurs, twirling his fingers around in the air.
Nathan pulls out his knife as he eyes Felix. âIâll give you something to fââ
âNo knives!â Lana warns, giving everyone a death stare. âCanât yâall be nice for one evening?â
âOne?â Alistair raises a brow.
âThought you said we were going to do this more often?â Milo asks.
âNot if you guys keep trying to kill each other,â Penelope says.
âExactly,â I say.
âSo ⦠youâre part of the Death Gang now?â Milo asks me.
âThe what now?â Kai asks, frowning at him.
âWell, you know, we murder everyone who crosses us. She kind of helped us kill people. To save Ares, of course,â Milo explains. âDeath Gang.â
âIâd be honored,â I say, snorting.
âWelcome to the Death Gang, apparently,â Alistair says, rolling his eyes.
âWhat the fuck?â Caleb mutters. âNo.â
âWhatâs wrong with Death Gang?â Milo asks.
âItâs corny as fuck,â Caleb adds.
âGuess we finally agree on something,â Nathan says.
âWhat about Murder Maniacs?â Milo suggests.
âOh God.â Kai rubs his face.
âIâm trying not to associate with these fuckers at all,â Felix growls.
âWell, youâre here.â Milo shrugs. âSo I guess that failed.â
Felix raises a brow. âYou think Iâm here because I want to be here?â
âYouâre here because I want you to be here,â Penelope interjects, and she looks around the circle. âAll of you.â
âThatâs right,â Lana pitches in. âAnd if you guys donât start behaving, we wonât hesitate to punt you out.â
All the men look in the other direction like they donât want to fight with their girls.
âWow. Should call them the Girl Boss gang,â I say, folding my arms.
âYou mean the Pussy-whipped gang,â Dylan says, snorting, and Felix smacks him in the head with a stack of cards.
âYour fucking turn,â Felix growls.
âWhat game are we playing?â Dylan asks as he leans back.
âYouâre asking that now?â Nathan makes a face. âWe already started.â
Dylan shrugs. âDidnât want to kill the vibe.â
âIâll kill something else soon,â Kai mutters under his breath, and Lana throws him a death stare. âI didnât say what.â
âSave the murderous intentions for later. Weâve still got plenty of targets to kill,â Alistair says as the boys each place down a card.
âWhat do you mean?â I ask, placing mine down.
âRemember that woman who tried to sell you?â Lana mutters. âShe sold a bunch more girls to the Bones Brotherhood too, who then sold them on to rich folks. Sheâs a real nasty one. Guess what? Weâve tracked her down.â
My eyes widen. âOh my GâYouâre going after them all, arenât you?â
She winks and leans in to whisper, âWhy do you think we rented this remote cabin in Priory Forest? That woman lives nearby, down the mountain slopes, near the road. And weâre gonna make all of these fuckers pay for what they did.â
âWhen?â I ask.
Her eyes sparkle. âTonight. But shhh.â She puts her finger to her lips. âDonât tell anyone. The boys and I are going out on our own for a little fun. But I promise weâll catch her.â
A filthy grin spreads on my face. âMy lips are sealed.â I wrap my arms around her. âThank you.â
Even now, when the dust has settled, my friends will go to extreme lengths to secure my safety and punish those who deserve nothing less.
I used to be terrified of the mere idea of aggression and murder, but now â¦
I welcome it with open arms.
Because these girls and boys are violent incarnate.
And it is their violence that makes me feel aliveâ¦
Without a single ounce of fear.
