Chapter 8: Shifting Sands

i belong to you

The charity event was just days away, and the school was buzzing with excitement. Decorations were being finalized, and rehearsal schedules were packed. Taeko was carefully orchestrating moments for Taehyung and Jungkook to be alone, ensuring Soojin couldn’t disrupt the growing bond between them.

Morning – Auditorium Setup

Jungkook stood at the entrance of the auditorium, reviewing the finalized floor plan on his tablet. The hum of activity around him didn’t faze him, but the sound of Taehyung’s voice calling out commands made him glance up.

“Put the floral arrangements on the left! No, not there! Ugh, why is no one listening to me?” Taehyung huffed, hands on his hips.

Jungkook walked over, his calm demeanor contrasting with Taehyung’s frustration. “You’re yelling too much. No one can focus.”

Taehyung spun around, glaring. “Oh, great. Another critic. If you’re so good at this, why don’t you take over?”

Jungkook smirked faintly. “I don’t need to. You’re already doing fine.”

Taehyung blinked, his irritation faltering. “Wait, was that… a compliment?”

Jungkook shrugged. “Don’t let it go to your head.”

Taehyung couldn’t help but smile. “Wow, Jeon Jungkook, giving compliments. What’s next? You actually smiling?”

Jungkook rolled his eyes, but a hint of amusement flickered in his expression.

Afternoon – Soojin’s Interruption

During a break, Taehyung was reviewing the event’s schedule when Soojin approached him.

“Taehyung,” she said sweetly, sitting next to him without invitation.

Taehyung tensed but didn’t look up. “Can I help you?”

“I was just thinking,” Soojin began, “you and Jungkook seem to be spending a lot of time together. Are you two… close?”

Taehyung finally looked at her, his gaze sharp. “Why does it matter?”

Soojin tilted her head, her smile not reaching her eyes. “I just find it fascinating. Jungkook doesn’t usually let people in, but he seems different around you.”

Taehyung raised an eyebrow. “And what are you trying to say?”

Before Soojin could answer, Jungkook appeared, his presence commanding.

“Soojin,” he said coldly, “don’t you have something better to do?”

Soojin looked up at him, feigning innocence. “I was just making conversation.”

“Well, you’re interrupting,” Jungkook said firmly.

Taehyung hid a smirk as Soojin stood up, clearly flustered. “Fine. I’ll see you both later,” she said, walking away.

Once she was gone, Jungkook turned to Taehyung. “You okay?”

Taehyung chuckled. “Did you just defend me?”

Jungkook looked away, embarrassed. “Don’t read into it.”

“I think I will,” Taehyung teased, his smile softening.

Evening – A Quiet Moment

After the long day, Jungkook and Taehyung found themselves sitting in the empty auditorium. The decorations sparkled under the dim lights, creating an almost magical atmosphere.

“You were amazing today,” Taehyung said, breaking the silence.

Jungkook glanced at him, surprised. “What do you mean?”

“Taking charge, keeping everyone on track—it’s impressive,” Taehyung said earnestly.

Jungkook’s expression softened. “I’m just doing what needs to be done.”

“You always say that,” Taehyung said, leaning back in his chair. “But there’s more to you than just responsibility, isn’t there?”

Jungkook didn’t reply immediately, his gaze fixed on the stage. “Maybe. I just… don’t show it often.”

Taehyung turned to him, his voice gentle. “You can, you know. With me.”

Their eyes met, and for a moment, the air between them felt charged. Jungkook looked away first, his cheeks faintly tinged with color.

“You’re annoying,” he muttered.

Taehyung laughed, the sound warm and genuine. “And you’re impossible. But maybe that’s why we work so well together.”

Taeko’s Journal – Late Night

Taeko grinned as he wrote in his journal, feeling accomplished.

“Step four: Make Jungkook notice Taehyung’s worth. Check.”

He leaned back, a satisfied smirk on his face. “Now, let’s see if I can push them closer tomorrow.”
