Chapter 545 - 552: Can't Stop
Rebirth of a Farming Wife
By the time they reached Feng Family Manor, it was already midnight. Mr. and Mrs. Su, hearing that their daughter had returned, were overjoyed and couldnât contain themselves. They hurried to the entrance to welcome her and, upon seeing their daughter truly standing before them, were so overcome with emotion that they shed tears.
âMy good girl, Lady Yue, heaven has eyes. You have finally returned to us alive from the brink of death. If something truly had happened to you, we wouldnât have known peace for the rest of our lives,â Madam Su sobbed, as she broke down first, while Master Su stood by, his eyes reddening with tears as well.
âFather and Mother, please donât cry, I am well, and you should be happy instead. Why are you crying? I have been unfilial and caused you to worry,â Su Wenyue said, her own eyes growing moist upon seeing her parents like this.
âThatâs right, we should be happy. Our daughter has finally come back, but somehow we just canât stop these tears,â Madam Su said, trying to laugh while wiping away her tears, looking somewhat comical.
Seeing Madam Su so excited that she had forgotten herself and left her son-in-law aside, Master Su began to attend to his son-in-law: âSon-in-law, it must have been arduous searching for Lady Yue all this wayâ¦â
Master Feng, as the head of his household, immediately came over when he received the news, along with Su Hengyi and his wife, and the Marquis Beiâan and his son. They too had come as soon as they heard the news, but due to the distance of their quarters within the courtyard, they arrived slightly later. A crowd gathered at the entrance; the wee hours were unusually bustling.
âThe wind is strong outside, Mother, letâs go inside to talk. Younger Sister is frail; we shouldnât let her catch cold,â Feng Ruolin, who was more attentive, noticed the paleness on Su Wenyueâs face and suggested so.
âIâm alright; itâs just that I feel rather embarrassed for making everyone get up in the middle of the night on my account,â Su Wenyue, no longer the naive young girl she used to be, spoke politely, given that she was at the Feng familyâs home and shouldnât be too casual.
âMiss Yue, thatâs cold talk, considering the relationship between our families. You should treat Feng Family Manor as your own home. Iâd be upset if youâre formal with me,â Master Feng said heartily, his voice conveying his carefree nature.
âThatâs right, Daughter, you donât need to be formal with your Uncle Feng; we are all family,â Madam Su chimed in, echoing Master Fengâa sign that the relationship between her and her daughter-in-law, Feng Ruolin, had indeed improved, as she spoke such affectionate words. But when she saw her daughter shivering, she quickly added,
âYour Sister-in-law is right; letâs go inside to talk. Iâve been negligent; itâs so dark and cold outside, while itâs warm and bright inside,â Madam Su said, taking her daughter with her to go indoors, followed by the whole group heading towards the same destination.
Once inside, Madam Han finally got a clear look at her daughter, and her face was full of distress: âLook how thin youâve become. You must have suffered a great deal during this time. Weâll have to nourish you properly to regain the weight youâve lost.â
âYes, Iâll listen to you, Mother. Iâll definitely fatten up to become a big chubby girl. But Iâm afraid that Han Yu might not want me then,â Su Wenyue jokingly reassured her parents, trying to lift their spirits.
âYou silly girl, youâve just returned and youâre already spouting nonsense. Those words arenât to be said lightly,â Madam Su scolded, tapping Su Wenyueâs forehead lightly and without real force.
Han Yu quickly agreed: âYou just eat more. If you become chubbier, Iâd be happier. Chubbiness is good; itâs a sign of good fortune. The chubbier you are, the more Iâll like you.ân/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
âDid you hear that? Your Brother-in-law has made his stance clear. Mother, make sure my sister gets well-fed. How can my sister, Su Hengyiâs sister, be so skinny she could be blown away by a gust of wind?â Su Hengyi said, frowning at the sight of his sisterâs gaunt appearance.
âMother, what about Brother Xing and the others? Are they asleep? I want to go see the children,â Su Wenyue said eagerly, her heart set on seeing them.
âYes, Mother, have the servants take us to see the children. Lady Yue has been thinking about them all the way here, and sheâs been talking about nothing but them. After so many days, they must have changed quite a bit, I assume?â Although Han Yu did not constantly talk about the children as Su Wenyue did, he missed them just as deeply, for they were his own flesh and blood.
âChildren are the apple of their parentsâ eyes; your longing for them is only natural. They are all doing well, though theyâve been calling for their father and mother from time to time, which is heart-wrenching. If they knew you were here, theyâd be over the moon. Go see them quickly; we wonât disturb your family reunion. After youâve seen the children, rest early, and we can talk more tomorrow,â Madam Su said.
Madam Su didnât want to miss more time with her daughter, but she also knew her daughter must be exhausted from the journey and showed understanding by holding back.
âAlright, I understand, Mother. You should rest early too, donât disrupt your sleep,â Su Wenyue replied.
In their room, the three young children were not asleep as the adults had said; instead, they lay in one bed, whispering to each other.
âBig brother, is what Grandfather and Grandmother said true? Is Mother really alright, and she will come see us soon?â Sister Yu asked uncertainly.
Brother Xing patted his sisterâs head soothingly: âOf course, itâs true. Mother is a good person, and heavenâs protection allowed her to survive certain death. We just need to wait patiently, and she will come see us soon; Mother loves us too much to delay,â he reassured.
âBut weâve been waiting for so long. How much longer must we wait? I really miss Mother,â Brother Chen said, having a harder time being convinced than Sister Yu. Mentioning Mother filled his eyes with tears that were on the brink of falling but he held them back. Mother had said that a man should not shed tears lightly, so he must be good and obedient for Mother to come back sooner.
âI donât know how much longer, but Mother loves us the most and wonât let us wait for too long,â Brother Xing comforted his siblings and himself. At least their mother was alive, and as long as she lived, there would come a day of reunion. They couldnât rush.
âBig brother, do you hear that noise outside? Itâs so noisy,â Sister Yu said.
The three little ones were sharing their thoughts when they heard a commotion outside, seemingly indicative of some event. However, being young, they were not expected to get involved in adult matters.
âI donât know. Itâs none of our concern. We should sleep now, and maybe when we wake up, Mother will be back,â Brother Xing suggested calmly.
âBut big brother, it sounds like someone said our parents have come back,â Brother Chen said with sharp ears.
âAre you serious? You didnât mishear?â Brother Xing, who initially was uninterested, immediately perked up, his eyes shining with excitement.
âI didnât hear it clearly; it was faint and intermittent. Big brother, letâs go outside and see if our parents have really come back,â Brother Chen proposed.
