Chapter 77
The Green Tea’s Crushing Victories in the ’70s
It was a long silence from the other end of the phone. So long that Pu Jianyi thought he had been disconnected.
âRugui, did you hear what I said? I said I saw the female comrade at the station today.ââYeah, Iâm listening.âHaving heard that, Pu Jianyiâs lips curved right away. âI knew you were still listening. Did you know what happened to that female comrade?âAnother silence from the other end of the phone. Pu Jianyi didnât wait this time, he carried on saying, âThat poor girl. She was hit by her adoptive parentsâ real daughter last time and this time she was accused by her own grandmother and cousinâ¦â¦âHe told Wen Rugui the entire case excitedly and Wen Rugui was still on the line with him when he was done.He took a look. It had been well over a minute by now. He was short of grinning from ear to ear. âRugui, you know this female comrade, right? Sheâs so pitiful. Do you think that I should lend her a hand?Wen Rugui frowned slightly with the receiver in his hand.He looked through the window and at the tall, grey wall outside. A very distinct face popped into his mind. She had a tear-like mole under the left eye, a very small one. A feature that one would not notice if one wasnât looking carefully. From what Pu Jianyi had told him, a fragile girl being helplessly bullied by her family appeared in his mind and somewhere inside of him felt uncomfortable. His eyelids shuddered a little and he said nonchalantly, âHelp her if itâs within your ability.âPu Jianyi chuckled. âAm I counting that as a favor for you?ââMmm.ââI am becoming more and more curious now. What is your relationship with this girl?ââNot related.ââYeah, right. You can barely tell women apart nevermind asking for help voluntarily. Be honest. Are you in a relationship?ââNo, your one minute is up.âThe phone was disconnected after that. The tip of Pu Jianyiâs tongue pushed the back of his teeth again when he was listening to the dial tone. There must be something going on with him. What one minute? It had been at least 5 minutes!Remembering Tong Xueluâs bright and big eyes, he tsked.Had he known who she was ahead of time, he would have found a way to weasel onto the case. What a bummer.***Jie Jinhua and the others returned to the compound.Sun Guilan threw herself at Jie Jinhua as soon as she had regained consciousness. âMom, please help Yanliang. You are the only one who can help him!âShe did not believe one bit that her mother-in-law had gone insane! Her mother-in-law was perfectly fine before going to the police station. It was not possible that she lost her mind just like that!Tong Erzhu, too, looked like he was about to cry. âMom, you raised Yanliang too. His life will be over if heâs been to prison!âFeng Zhaodi looked at her mother-in-law intensely, trying to see if she could find any signs.Jie Jinhua, however, drooled and smiled foolishly as though she had really gone insane.Jie Jinhua was not happy about it either. She wanted to save her grandson as well but, if she said she was not crazy, the cops would hold her accountable for her words and she just might get a death sentence! As such, she must continue to pretend that she was crazy no matter what.Feng Zhaodi pulled her husband aside and asked in a low voice, âWhat happened? How did Mom just go crazy like that?âTong Sanzhuang scratched his nose and said, âThey said mom committed perjury and accused a military personnel and that that will warrant a death penalty. Mom freaked out, peed herself, and said she was crazy.âFeng Zhaodi heard âdeath penaltyâ and was startled. âHow did we get to the point of death penalty? Tell me the entire thing!âTong Sanzhuang picked his ear and said, âI donât remember the details anymore.âEach cop was meaner than the previous one. He dared not even breathe too loudly once he was in there. Then there was the very formal way that they talked. There was no way he could repeat them.Feng Zhaodi smacked him viciously. âHow useless are you? Can even remember something so simple. I should have been the one who went had I known!â
