Chapter 3: You think I have cooties?

This Girl

"So, let me get this straight, your brother Finn gave his friend John a birthday cake but when Finn ate the cake he had an allergic reaction to walnuts that weren't even in the cake but had touched it?" I take a deep breath after finishing my sentence.

"Yup!" Bubbles says.

"And you're happy about that because...?"

"I never liked John. Finn isn't allowed to see him anymore. John's mum said," she winks, smiling happily, her bright blonde hair bouncing around her in a ponytail.

"I wish my life had been so full of drama when I was six."

"No, you don't. A depressed and guilty six year old crying in his bedroom all night is not something you should wish for," she frowns sarcastically. "It would keep your big sister, big brother and parents and dog awake all night as well."

I laugh. "I understand then."

I open my locker and take out my books. Bubbles continues chatting to me as people walk beside us. We begin to walk to Bubble's locker together when a hand wraps itself around my waist. I smell men's cologne and immediately know who it is.

"Hey babe," I say, closing my locker and turning my head to look at him.

"Hi dude," he replies and smirks.

"Get off me," I growl and shove him into a locket.

"Ow," he rubs his shoulder and glares at me from under his Ray Bans. I smile sweetly at him and then walk off quickly. He chases after me. Bubbles gives us a look, grins evilly and runs off.

"Bubbles," I growl after her. He grabs my hand and drags me along after him. I quickly pull my hand out of his.

"No need to put your germy hand in mine," I say, walking beside him.

"You think I have cooties?"

"Yes."

"Ok," he scrunches his eyebrows down and looks at me weirdly.

"It's not my fault you caught the disease!"

"What the hell?" he mumbles under his breath and I shove him. He laughs. "Don't push me! I have cooties, remember?"

I roll my eyes but smile anyway. He pokes me in the side and I squeal.

"Now you have cooties, too," he says.

"No, I don't!" I say.

"I thought it was a contagious disease," he smirks, and I glare at him. Before I can say anything, or sprint away from him (the preferred option), he swoops down, pulls my legs off the ground, and throws me over his shoulder. I pound on his back as he picks up my bag and sprints off.

"Alex! Alex!" I whisper yell, not wanting to yell at the top of my lungs for the whole school to hear. "Put me down!"

"Nope," he says and sprints up some stairs at the speed of a cheetah. I let out a scream. He chuckles and runs faster – if that's even popular. I suddenly have a great idea, yelling out, "ouch!" I go limp and he immediately stops and puts me down.

"Are you alright?" he asks me, holding me up by the arms, worry and guilt etched into every corner of his face.

I burst out laughing and he pulls his hands off me and scowls. I stop laughing and put a hand on his arm. "I'm sorry," I try to say sincerely. But it comes out more sarcastic. He rolls his eyes with his arms crossed but smiles anyway. "Hey, you were the one that ran across the school with me on your back without my permission. See you in calculus."

He grunts and I smile at him and wave. He rolls his eyes at me and walks away.

Bubbles rushes up to me from nowhere. I turn to her. "What is his problem?" I gesture to his retreating figure.

"He doesn't have a problem, he's got fetish! He wants to talk to you for no reason at all!"

"Ew! Do you know what that even means?"

"No, I know its associated to love, though, ya know, good ol' Selena," she takes out her phone and starts typing. "I've got it!" she begins reading the definition. "A form of sexual," giggles says the word quietly and erupts into giggles before continuing. "Desire in which gratification is linked to an abnormal degree to a particular object, item of clothing, part of the body, etc.

"I think you and Selena had rather keep that to yourselves," I raise my eyebrows and we walk off to History.

Tug. Tug. Tug.

My head continues to be pulled back by my ponytail once a minute. On the tenth tug, I whip around to face the jerk, Chloe and Bubbles giving me weird looks.

"Would you stop?" I whisper-yell.

"Sorry," he disappears under his desk and pops up in front of it. I raise my eyebrows. He looks at the teacher's back and kneels beside me, picking up my pencil. He's so close I can smell his amazing cologne, and I have to pull my self away from him to enable myself not to sniff him like a rabbit smelling a carrot. I'm so weird.

"Smell too good for you?" he whispers into my ear and picks up my rubber. I glare at him and he smirks. He bends over my notebooks and rubs out an answer.

"Hey!" I whisper at him and flick his arm with my hand. He puts the rubber down and puts the pencil on the paper and looks up at me.

"The answer is sixty. Not fifty-four," he says, writing it down and nodding towards the teacher writing fifty-four on the whiteboard. He hands me back my pencil and ducks back under his desk. I turn to my notebook and look at what he wrote. His writing is neat and evenly spaced out.

I look over at the working out and understand what I did wrong. What everyone else did wrong. Alex calls out to the teacher.

"Miss?" he asks, she turns around. "The answer is sixty, not fifty-four."

The teacher looks back at the board and then checks the textbook. She nods slightly and changes her answer.

Alex pulls on my ponytail again and I turn around. "She must get it wrong a lot," I say. "why do you correct her every single time?"

"Because if people do that in a test she'll mark it right and when she sees mine she'll be like 'oh, this is correct, everyone else is wrong, lets go and give them F's,'" he says, and I laugh quietly and turn back around.

The rest of the lesson passes quickly and without any interruptions from Alex. He corners Bubbles and I after class.

"I should be in advanced, advanced placement calculus, don't you think, dude?" he says, leaning against the wall outside the door with a smirk. I roll my eyes.

"If there was one and if people think that it wouldn't boost your elephant sized ego, then yes, you should be," I say.

"Oh, c'mon, brother, you know I only have one because of my godly good-looks," he smirks.

"Stop calling yourself hot, the only thing you can turn on is your microwave," I smile sweetly at him and scoot past him and to catch up to Bubbles, who's stopped and waited for me a few minutes away. We continue walking through the corridors and I feel her staring at me and giggling. I turn to her.

"What is it?" I ask.

"You guys are meant to be," she clasps her hands and flutters her long eyelashes. I laugh at her and her statement.

"I'd go dig a hole to Russia and jump in it if that happened," I say.

"I'll remember that," she winks and I roll my eyes.

We walk into the cafeteria after getting our lunch. Bubbles and I sit down beside each other and start chatting to Chloe and Kate. We talk about Books, school, travel and Shawn Mendes, the only guy Kate would ever date, she says. Kate really doesn't like the guys at school. She tells us she has classified the boys at our school into five categories. There is the:

Needy Nerds - clingy smart boys interested in girls

Harassing Hobbos - Geeky people/'peace dudes' that are extremely perverted

Jerky Jocks - Jocks that play girls/date the cheerleaders

Annoying Artists - Creative boys interested in girls

Bacteriological Bad boys - More players with gigantic egos and leather jackets

Of course, Kate explained all of this in our conversation about Shawn Mendes, not only her celebrity crush, but her only crush, and her life long dream.

"Nat and Alex Collins are destined to be," Bubbles says when Kate is finished talking about Shawn.

"Alex Collins?" Chloe smiles and raises her eyebrows at me.

"I don't like-" I'm cut off when a hand wraps itself around my wrist and pulls me away from the table. "Go away Alex," I groan.

"Well, I'd just like to let you and your friends know that we are totally destined to be," he says loudly, tilting his head towards my group.

I roll my eyes. "What do you want babe?"

"Naw," Chloe and Bubbles sigh in sync and I glare at them.

"I wanted to ask you if you were okay?" he says.

"What?"

"Are you okay?"

"Um... yeah? Why?"

"Because yesterday you sneezed and I thought you had a cold," he tells me seriously.

I laugh. "Did you come over here to ask me about my health? Or just for my attention. Both of those goals have been reached, now you can go back to were you came from," I shoo him away and sit down. He is so annoying.

"Wow," Bubbles places a hand under her chin and sighs dreamily.

"You two were made to be together," Chloe copies her and I roll my eyes.

***

That afternoon when I arrive home from school I walk into the house, tossing my keys on the couch and walking into the living room.

"Hey guys, what're you doing home?" I ask Lucas and Paul.

"Mum dropped us off," Paul says, pushing the buttons of his Xbox controller.

"She's gone to get groceries," Lucas tells me, playing video games like his brother.

"Don't you both have homework to do?" I ask them. They don't reply, they just keep shooting people on the Xbox. I walk over to the remote for the TV and turn it off.

"NAT!" they both yell, throwing their controllers onto the couch and rising up to shot at me.

"You've gotta do your homework!" I tell them, throwing my hand up in a surrender pose.

"You are so annoying!" they yell at me and stomp up the stair together, slamming their doors. My phone buzzes as I let out a sigh.
