Devious Vow: Chapter 27
Devious Vow: A Dark Enemies To Lovers Mafia Romance
âThanks for coming.â
Kratos nods, planting a heavy hand on my shoulder. âAll good.â His dark brows furrow deeply. âYou okay?â
I nod. âIâm fine.â
He glances past me, gesturing with his chin up to my open bedroom door, where Eloise is.
âShe okay?â
âShe will be.â
We both turn and glance at the rug he brought over, which is now wrapped around a tarp, which in turn is wrapped around Roccoâs body.
Kratos glances to me. âThat your firstâ¦time?â
He means first kill. The answer is yes. Iâve hit men. Iâve seriously fucked people up, and sent them to the hospital, but thatâs the first life Iâve taken.
I feel nothing.
Not a poetic âgnawing cold of nothingâ, I mean I literally donât feel anything remotely approaching guilt, or shame, or any kind of âbadâ for killing that piece of shit.
All I know is Iâd do it again in a heartbeat to anyone who laid a hand on Eloise.
âYou got anything to drink around here?â
I nod. âYeah.â
Kratos follows me into the kitchen, where I yank a bottle of whiskey out from behind the cereal boxes on a shelf above the fridge. Yes, I hid it from Eloise. Sue me.
âIce? Neat?â
He shakes his head. âNot for me, man. For you.â
âIâm good.â
He just takes the bottle from me, grabs a glass, and pours me a hefty shot.
âDrink it. Trust me. Youâre fine right now, but thereâs going to be an edge coming, and thisâll dull it. Drink.â
Fuck it.
I knock back the whiskey in one heavy slug and set the glass back down as I swallow.
âBetter?â
âYeah, actually.â I flash him a grateful smile. âThanks.â
He nods and leans his large frame back against my fridge with his arms folded over his chest.
âSo, what happens now?â
âHow active is your building? I mean, are residents going in and out all night?â
I shake my head. âNope.â
âGood. Iâm going to chill here with the assholeââ¦he nods at the rolled-up rugâ¦âfor a while. If thatâs okay.â
âI get the feeling one of us is the expert here, and itâs not me.â
Kratos chuckles quietly. âIâll wait until midnight or so, drag his sorry ass out to my car where I parked out back. After thatâ¦â He clears his throat. âLetâs be real, Alistair. Probably best if you donât know.â
âNot your first rodeo?â
He grins and shakes his head. âNope. Look, youâre clear of this. Itâs never coming back on you, or her. One of my guys swiped the tapes from the building security office before I even got here. And this fuckerâs car has beenâ¦â he shrugs. âWell, again, you donât need to know the details. His credit card is going to show up making some purchases in New Jersey, then in Kentucky, then southern Florida, and thatâs that.â
I exhale, nodding. âI owe you.â
âYeah, probably,â he chuckles. âHow about for starters you donât mention this to my brothers, yeah?â
I grin, shaking his outstretched hand. âDeal.â
Ares, Kratosâ oldest brother and the head of the Drakos family, does a lot of their businessâboth criminal and legitimateâthrough Crown and Black. And of course, Hades, the next oldest Drakos brother, is married to Elsa Guin, one of our top attorneys and an equity partner.
Kratos is helping me today becauseâ¦well, because heâs a friend. But also, the Drakos family has zero love for the Carvelis. Not when Luca, and then fucking Massimo, tried to force a marriage to Calliope, who is Aresâ, Hadesâ, Deimosâ, and Kratosâ little sister.
âYou two should get out of here,â Kratos rumbles. âIâll stick around, clean up anything that needs cleaning upâ¦â
Blood. He means blood.
âAnd then Iâll take out the trash. Sounds good?â
âSounds like I seriously owe you.â
He grins as we shake hands again. âDonât worry about it, man. Iâm always up for anything that kicks dirt in that fuck Massimoâs face.â
Eloise is quiet as she stands in the entryway to the hotel suite, drinking it in. Sheâs been silent the whole way here, and my mind is going to the worst possible scenarios.
She shouldnât have seen what she did. But there was no way around it. When I barged in and saw that piece of shit putting his hands on herâespecially when I realized it was Rocco, the fucker who slapped her around for Massimoâthere was only one conclusion.
But still, she just witnessed me kill a man with my bare hands. She saw me bloodied and savage, the worst, monstrous version of myself.
She hasnât said a word since.
Fuck.
I frown as I close the door to the suite overlooking Central Park West.
âItâs just for a few days,â I say. âAgain, itâs going to look like youâre on a business trip to Chicago with Taylor. He wonât know youâre in New York.â
I donât know what the solution here is. But I do not want her with that psycho. Itâs not like weâll be able to keep this up forever, but I can buy us some daysâ¦a week, topsâ¦before Massimo gets suspicious.
Unless he already is.
Eloise crosses the floor to the windows. She puts her hand on the glass, staring wordlessly out across Central Park.
I walk up behind her, keeping my distance, trying not to startle her.
âEloiseâ¦â I shake my head. âIâm sorry you sawâ ââ
âThank you.â
She turns, her eyes locking with mine.
âAlistairâ¦â
âI know itâs a lot to take in, and if you want to talkâeven to someone elseâabout what you sawâ ââ
âI saw you save my life.â
She moves toward me quickly, and I catch her in my arms as she hugs me fiercely. Her mouth presses to mine, kissing me slow and deep as she clings tightly to me.
When she pulls away, suddenly, sheâs the Eloise I know again.
âI donât need to âtalk toâ anyone. And I donât see you any differently,â she says quietly, as if sheâs seen the unspoken question in my eyes. Her lips curl up. âAnd this place is amazing.â
âAmazing enough to be home for a few days?â
She grins. âUh, yeah.â
âGood.â
Her hands grip mine tightly, even though I had zero of intention of moving away.
âAlistair?â
âYeah?â
Her lip worries in her teeth.
âWhile Iâm hereâ¦â Her eyes lift to mine. âWill you stay with me?â
âThat wasnât ever a question.â
