Chapter 19

17

Twin Operative

Colton struggled with sleeping quite often. It started when he was 7 years old after he'd seen his first dead body. He'd been spending time in Claytons room playing video games with his brother, who was 10 at the time, when Payton came rushing into Claytons room to tell them that a pair of twins were back from a mission. She said that she'd seen their car pull up. It was late, so they weren't supposed to be awake. But these 3 siblings idolized the twins that trained here and the twins always had stories about how their missions had gone.

However, when they went down to the foyer that night and hid behind one of the walls to peek around, they found Kendra and David kneeling over someone lying on the floor. They recognized him immediately as one of the twins training here, Jefferey. His brother, Joey, was kneeling on the other side of him. He was sobbing over his brother's lifeless body.

Kendra had laid a hand on Joeys shoulder and said softly, "I'm so sorry, Joey. There was nothing else anyone could have done."

When Payton gasped in shock that brought David's attention right to where his three children stood. He instantly rushed over to them and scooped Colton up in his arms, turning his youngest son away from the sight. But it was too late, the image of Jefferey's bullet ridden body lying in the middle of the foyer was now burnt into his mind. It would haunt his dreams from time to time. But as he got older and went on more missions the number of bodies he'd seen began to rise and now the thought of every one of them kept him awake from time to time.

This had been one of those nights.

Typically, he would go down to the training room and use a punching bag to get his thoughts away from what would drag him from sleep. But when he got off the elevator and passed through the foyer, he spotted someone sitting in the bay window of the front room. It didn't take long for his eyes to adjust in the darkness for him to realize that it was Carmen.

She was still in her pajamas that consisted of a tank top and leggings. Her hair was down and fell perfectly around her shoulders. She sat with her knees pulled to her chest and was staring intently out the window.

Colton paused his steps. For the first time since he met her, the sight of her was holding him captive and he felt something like a fluttering in his stomach.

Her stare was so focused on the sky outside the window that he didn't want to interrupt her, but he couldn't fight the urge that just wanted to hear her voice in this moment.

He walked over to the bay window; she looked up at him and smiled. "Hey."

"Penny for your thoughts?" He sat across from her and pulled his own knees to his chest.

Carmen shrugged and returned her stare out the window. "I'm just thinking about my life before all of this."

Colton leaned his head back against the wood of the bay window and listened as she spoke.

"I miss it," she admitted with a small frown. "I miss getting up early to go open the café and smelling the coffee and espresso while it was getting brewed. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I even miss those customers who ordered really complicated drinks. I miss my mom too."

Colton frowned himself, instantly feeling guilty. Sometimes he forgets that they pulled her from what seemed to be a normal life. Aside from her tech, she passed as an average girl just living a regular lifestyle. "Have you thought about going to see her?"

Carmen shook her head. "I won't lie to her again. If I go to see her, I have to tell her everything." She met his eyes. "Including the fact that Ainsley is here."

He didn't argue because he didn't disagree. He only nodded.

"Colton," she whispered, drawing his attention once more. Her eyes were closed now. "Do you think that I'll ever fit in here with everyone else?"

"Of course, I do. Like I've said before, you just have to let them get to know you."

She opened her eyes and shrugged. "How?"

He twisted his mouth to the side while contemplating her answer. Colton knew that he was probably one of the only people she was comfortable with so far, so he knew that she would need to start with him.

He nudged her foot with his own. "Tell me a secret."

She furrowed her eyebrows. "A secret?"

He nodded. "Yeah. Tell me some really random fact about yourself that you've never told anyone. I can go first if you want."

Carmen smiled and nodded.

Colton grinned and had to hold back his own laughter at how silly the first thing that came to his mind was. But he went with it anyways, "I'm a sucker for rom coms."

Carmen stared at him for a moment and then a smile broke out on her face, and she chuckled softly, "You like rom coms?"

Colton nodded with no hint of embarrassment. "Absolutely."

"What's your favorite?"

Coltons smile never faded. "The Notebook."

Carmen rolled her eyes and laughed. "That's not even a rom com."

"It is to me. Now what about you?"

She scratched her head as she thought about it. "I don't know... cheese pizza is the only kind that I eat but sometimes I don't mind pineapple on it. There, I said it. Pineapple on pizza is not that bad."

Colton blew out a long breath. "Carmen... that's probably the most diabolical thing you've ever done."

This had them both laughing, but their eyes never left each other's. Carmen picked up on how Coltons laugh sounded like music to her ears, literally. She'd never heard a laugh like his in her entire life. Any feeling of anxiety or worry that she developed while staring out the window for the past 30 minutes had subsided at the sound.

Carmen cleared her throat. "You can't judge me for my choice on pizza toppings when you like rom coms."

"Don't hate on them. They're underrated."

Carmen only shook her head in response and Colton shrugged. "Want to watch one?"

"Watch a rom com?"

Colton nodded and looked out the window at the dark sky. "It's not like either of us can sleep anyway." He grinned. "And I refuse to let you hate on something before you try it."

"I could say the same about pineapple on pizza." Carmen scooted off the bay window.

"If you can sit through one movie with me, I'll try pineapple on pizza." He didn't hide the grimace on his face and Carmen laughed.

"It's a deal."

Colton led Carmen back to the elevator and back up to the second floor. Coltons room was not far from Carmens but it looked very different from her own. She took in the red and white wallpaper, it was mostly white but there was an occasional swirl of deep red. His bed, covered with a red comforter to match the color of his walls, was shoved against the wall in the corner and there was a dresser towards the opposite side of his room with a TV on top of it. Carmen noticed a picture frame on his nightstand beside his bed and didn't take long to realize that it was a photo of him and Clayton. It looked like it had been done professionally, as if it were one of several family photos. There were orange and brown fallen leaves on the ground beside them as they sat in front of a tree. The picture was clearly taken during the fall season and the boys were wearing flannel shirts over t-shirts. Coltons hair was longer and Claytons hair was shorter. They were both smiling and laughing. The sight of a smile on Claytons face had taken Carmen by surprise. He looked... happy. This had Carmen wondering if there was a possibility that this photo was taken before the death of their sister.

"That's my favorite picture of me and Clay," Colton said from behind her when he followed her stare to the picture. "Besides some from when we were kids."

Carmen looked over her shoulder at the small smile on his own face and the level of love and admiration that Colton had for his older brother became abundantly clear.

Colton was watching as Carmen looked around his room and sat down on the edge of his bed. "You don't have any other pictures?"

Colton clenched his jaw and walked over to the dresser to turn on the TV. "I used to but the rest of them had Payton in it." He sighed and picked up the remote. "I'm sure that I'll be able to put them back up someday, but Clay comes in here a lot and I don't want him to get sad looking at them."

She nodded sadly. Colton clicked a few buttons on the remote until he brought up his library of movies that he downloaded. Carmen smiled looking at the TV when she realized that he, in fact, was not lying about liking rom coms. Just from what she'd seen on the list he'd owned about a dozen. He finally clicked on one and set the remote back on the dresser as the intro to the movie began playing.

He walked around to the opposite side of the bed and sat down, leaning back against the pillows and adjusting himself so that he lay on his side. He looked up to meet Carmens eyes and smiled. "You can get comfortable, I don't bite."

Carmen rolled her eyes with a soft smile and matched his actions of laying on her side and propping her head up on her elbow.

The two were facing each other but had their eyes trained on the TV as the movie played.

Every now and then, Coltons eyes would flick up to get a glance of Carmen.

Needless to say, she was invested in the movie. He tried to be. But it was hard for him to focus when every nerve in his body was aware of their close proximity.

When the movie was nearly halfway finished, Colton felt his eyes begin to grow heavy and burn as they needed to close badly. He finally looked up at Carmen again only to see that her head was now resting on her bicep and her eyes were closed. Her shoulder rose and fell with every steady breath. Colton wanted to gasp at the peaceful look on her face. He hadn't seen her at a state as entrancing as this.

He forced himself to tear his eyes away to look at his alarm clock. It was nearly 4 am, and the two of them were supposed to be up early for training in just a few hours. Colton knew that Carmen had been working hard in her training so far, hard enough that she was close enough to practicing hand-to-hand combat. If anything, the both of them deserved a day off.

He grabbed his phone off his nightstand and turned off any upcoming alarms for that morning.

Colton turned his head back to Carmen and instantly decided that he didn't want to wake her. He grabbed hold of the blanket folded at the end of his bed and stretched it out over Carmen who stirred in response but still didn't open her eyes.

He laid back against his pillow. And the moment his head met the soft cushion, sleep came for him.

-

"What's the deal?" Luke asked, sitting at one of the computers, leaning back with his hands folded over his stomach.

"The deal," Kendra said as she poked Luke in the side of his head and walked passed him to the front of the screening room. "Is that we have something very important to discuss."

She turned to the rest of the team, that were spaced throughout the room, watching her attentively.

"As all of you know, when you were in Las Vegas, Ryder Hanson brought it to our attention that someone placed a bounty on Carmen. I've tried reaching out to some of my contacts to confirm this." Kendra folded her hands together in front of her. "It's true, and it's not a small bounty either. At the moment it's at five million, but that could always increase."

"Do we have any leads on who placed it?" Colton asked from beside Carmen.

Kendra shook her head. "Unfortunately not. There are a few potential people that we could try asking but..."

"There's no way you can get that kind of information without clueing them in on the fact that Carmen works for the CIA now," Sophie said. "They'd dub her a rat and do anything they could to hunt her down."

Kendra nodded. "Exactly." She looked to Carmen who was chipping the paint at her nails anxiously. "You were working alone for so long, it would be obvious if we asked anyone about you. But Ryder was right about one thing, you've managed to shake up the entire black market."

"How the hell did she manage to do that?" Luke scoffed.

"The bounty has created some divides. Your allies, versus your enemies." She nodded to Carmen. "Your tech alone was already starting to make people's jobs harder when it comes to dealing relatively anything on the black market. Partly because it was starting to catch law enforcements eyes. But now, everyone's terrified. Some saw you as untouchable but now that you've got five million dollars on your head, they're all scared for themselves."

Carmen sighed. "Seems like I'm everyone's enemy now."

Colton nudged Carmen. "Do you have any idea about who could have started this? Do you have anyone who you think would hate you that much?"

Carmen twisted her mouth to the side and recalled the night Marcus died. Marcus did indeed have a team, maybe they would know something if he did. But there was no way that she could tell them that without giving up Carston, Niylah, and Paris for murder. Even if it was to protect her.

She locked eyes with Kendra. "Do you remember the deal that we made the night I came here? If I make tech for you then you get rid of everything you have on all my friends."

Ainsley released a small laugh from across the room and Carmen shot her sister a glare. Ainsley met her blazing eyes and never let her smile falter. "You found out you were coming here, and you used your one bargain to take the evidence off other dealers?"

Carmen perked up defensively. "They're my friends. They've been good to me for years."

She reverted her attention to Kendra. "I won't let them get into trouble just because I slipped up and got caught. I want complete immunity for them."

Kendra nodded slowly. "I need a list of names."

Carmen felt a bit of relief. She knew that Kendra couldn't take back her word here, Carmen wouldn't touch so much as a smart phone for her ever again.

So, Carmen listed off the friends who had helped her the most throughout her years on the black market, "Carston Drew, Paris Doherty, Niylah Kraft, Torryn Manix, Vince Bianchi, and Jillian Holt."

Kendra tilted her head and didn't say anything for a few moments. Claytons voice suddenly filled the silence, "That's a lot of people who sure don't seem innocent."

She prepared herself for the glare he was going to give her when she turned to face him, returning the look.

Ever since Colton had been honest about his sister, and about the fact that Clayton lost his own twin, Carmen had tried to be sympathetic. She tried to understand that she too was a twin and didn't ever want to go through that, no matter what rift may lie between her and her sister. While that may be the reason for why he could be so cold, it still never failed to irritate Carmen anyways.

"Like I said," she started. "They're my friends. They've all saved my life and we've helped each other. We have respect for each other and they're the reason I'm even alive."

He rolled his eyes. "Oh yeah, they sound very honorable."

"I wouldn't expect you to know a thing about honor."

"Says you."

Carmen clenched her fists at her side and pursed her lips. "If you don't like me, then why do you even speak to me? Why do you open your mouth half the time about anything that has to do with me if some snarky comment is going to come out?"

Clayton leaned against the wall and crossed his arms. "Because I can."

Carmen scoffed. "You're supposed to be a leader? What a joke."

"Carmen," Sophie started, drawing everyone's eyes to her. Carmen met a very stern stare, but Sophie spoke with a gentle voice. "I agree with you that Clayton needs to shut up sometimes, maybe this is one of those moments. But don't question his status as a leader. Like your friends are the reason that you're alive, Clayton is the reason that any of us get to wake up in the mornings. Including Ainsley."

Carmen couldn't help but glance at her sister who gave away no look that indicated she disagreed with Sophie's words. This had Carmen wondering exactly how many times Ainsley had brushed deaths hand with her own and Clayton had pulled her from its grasp. For the first time ever, a small flare of gratitude flickered in her chest.

Carmen only took a deep breath and looked back to Clayton who was staring at the floor. "Just don't speak to me. It'll make our lives a lot easier."

"Well, that's going to be hard." Kendra half-laughed.

This brought both their eyes to her. "Why?" Clayton asked.

Kendra tucked her hair behind her ears and wore a smile on her face. "Because I have a mission for the both of you."

Carmen blinked in surprise. "What?"

"The rest of the team will stay behind," Kendra explained. "It looks like the two of you need to learn to work together."

"We did. In Vegas."

"Barely."

Clayton shrugged. "But we got the job done, didn't we?"

His mother laughed. "You couldn't even make it to the parking lot without fighting. This isn't up for discussion."

Carmen groaned. "I'd really rather not."

"Finally," Clayton said. "Something we can agree on."

"Well, it's too late." Kendra rolled her eyes. "I already spoke to both your partners, and they think it's a great idea. Consider each other temporary partners until the mission is over."

Carmen threw a glare in Colton's direction. "Traitor," she hissed.

He winked at her. "You'll thank me later."

Clayton was scowling at Ainsley. "Thanks for nothing, Ainsley."

Ainsley yawned and gave him a thumbs up. "Happy to help, big man."

"Back to the topic at hand." Kendra drew their attention back to her as she watched Carmen closely. "I'll grant complete immunity for all of your friends, now help us figure out who could have done this."

Carmen sighed. "The night that you guys arrested me, I was dealing with one of my buyers, my friend Carston and his bodyguards were with me. My buyer's name was Marcus Caldwell."

"Was?" Luke asked.

Carmen trained her eyes on her feet, still remembering the images of what she'd seen that night. "Marcus started acting weird, he said something about money and how it was strictly business. I wasn't sure what he meant, but then he pulled a gun on me." She paused. "Carston and his bodyguards saved me."

"So, he's dead?" Alexa spoke next, leaning forward in her seat at the computer beside her brother.

Carmen nodded. "It didn't click until Ryder told us about the bounty. Marcus was going to kill me to collect it. He has a team, but they've probably dispersed now that he's dead. Still, they might know something."

"Is there anyone else that could possibly be behind it?" Kendra asked.

This question had Carmen thinking long and hard about other issues she's had in the past. Finally, a face came to mind and anger followed. While she doesn't believe this person would do something this drastic, she couldn't ignore it as an option. "Jaylen Norris, maybe. She specializes in racketeering. We had an... incident, a little more than a year ago. I don't think she's behind it but other than that, I can't think of anyone else." Carmen smirked. "Like you said, I worked alone a lot. I liked to have the least amount of interactions as possible."

"It's better than nothing." Colton placed a hand on Carmens shoulder. She met his soft gaze. "We'll find who did this."

Carmen gave him a smile that showed all the gratitude she held at that statement.

"Is that all?" Clayton asked, not masking the annoyance in his voice.

Carmens smile fell and she forced herself not to give a rebuttal to his words. Colton shook his head slowly, dropping his hand from her shoulder and mouthing: Ignore him.

"Yes," Kendra replied. "You're all free to go."

Clayton wasted no time to walk over to the door and wait for it to open before walking out. Santana and Luke followed him.

Ainsley walked over to Alexa and Sophie to spark up some conversation about retouching the roots of her hair with more pink.

Carmen was about to go to the door when she felt a hand slip through her own. She slightly jumped at the gesture and turned to meet Coltons eyes, a smile on his face. "I want to show you something."

Carmen narrowed her eyes. "Should I be scared?"

Colton laughed softly. "No. Come on."

He gently tugged on her hand and led her out of the screening room. Colton did not reveal exactly what the surprise was, not even when Carmen asked a dozen times as he brought her all the way to the hallway of the kitchen. He never released her hand once.

Even though Colton had been the one to take her hand in the first place, he didn't exactly ignore the small feeling in his chest that sparked when he did it. It had been a few days since the two fell asleep while watching a movie in his room. When Colton woke several hours later, he'd realized that he'd woken up alone. Some part of him found disappointment in this. But when he stretched his tired arm across the mattress to the spot where Carmen had been laying, he felt warmth. He knew that she had to have slipped out of the room only moments before he'd woken, and he found himself smiling as he attempted to return to his slumber.

Neither had mentioned anything about it, but no moment spent with Carmen had felt like it usually did ever since. Every now and then ever since that day he would catch her stare, see her smile or even feel her gentle touch and feel an overwhelming sensation in his gut.

He had no word for it.

But whatever it was only ever made him smile.

This was one of those times.

What Colton didn't know, was that Carmen felt that very same flutter in her own body at his touch.

He was not alone in the comfort that their presence brought each other.

Carmen followed closely behind Colton as he led her down the kitchen hallway.

Right before they crossed the threshold to the kitchen, Colton turned to Carmen and told her to close her eyes. She reluctantly obliged and felt him pull her into the room. He abruptly stopped her and placed his hands on her shoulders to face her towards what he intended for her to see.

"Okay," he said, "open your eyes."

Carmen opened her eyes. The first thing her eyes landed on was something black and gold that was sitting on the countertop. She knew that it hadn't been there before, but it was impossible to miss due to its size. Her mouth fell open as she instantly realized what it was.

An espresso machine.

But it wasn't only an espresso machine, it also had a steamer built into it and a small screen displayed with options as to how many shots of espresso to pour, what type of drink to make and even the power button for the steamer.

"You talked about how much you missed your life before all of this." Colton shrugged, "So I figured, why not bring a bit of that to you? It's no Java Cooler, but it's a step in the right direction. The lady at the store helped me figure out what kind of beans you would need, and I looked up recipes for the drinks you made at the Java Cooler and got my hands on some of the same syrups you used there. That stuff is in the pantry."

Carmen blinked as wetness stung her eyes.

It wasn't only the kindness in the gesture, but also the amount of effort that Colton had clearly put into this gift that made Carmens heart swell in her chest.

She turned to see Colton's smiling face and the biggest smile she's worn since she arrived at The Compound broke out on her own.

Carmen flung herself forward, throwing her arms around Colton's neck and hugging him tightly to her. "Thank you. Thank you. A hundred times, thank you."

Colton laughed and wrapped his arms around her torso in return. "Of course. At least now you'll be able to have the coffee smell that you miss."

Carmen pulled away. "This is seriously the nicest thing that anyone's done for me in a long time."

"I know it's not much, but I just hope that it helps start making you feel at home."

Carmen instantly shook her head. "It's more than enough, Colton." The gratitude glistened in her eyes. "You have no idea how much this means to me."

Out of the corner of his eye, Colton noticed movement in the doorway to the kitchen and stepped out of Carmen's grasp just in time for Santana to enter the room.

She halted by the doorway and looked directly to the counter where the newly gifted espresso machine now sat. Her head tilted in question. "Is that a coffee machine?"

Carmens smile never left her face. "It's an espresso machine. Colton got it for me."

Santana's brown eyes flicked to Colton. Only for a split second was she able to mask the surprise on her face. Colton knew Carmen didn't have enough training to pick up on this quite yet, so she didn't question it when Santana slowly nodded. "That's cool."

She walked over to the counter and began inspecting the machine. "How does it work? Luke is probably gonna try to use it, he's obsessed with caffeine."

Carmen looked back to Colton with an expectant expression. He nodded towards Santana with encouragement. His words rang in her head: Try.

She took a deep breath and turned around, "I can show you," she offered.

Santana gave her a small smile over her shoulder.

Colton watched as Carmen went over to his best friend and listened as Carmen began explaining the differences in settings.

It was a small step, but a step in the right direction, nonetheless.

-

Ainsley pulled the trigger on the handgun. She continued to train her aim on the target and fired once more.

She lowered the gun and put the safety on to examine her work. Even from down the range, she could see that the bullseye on the paper target, that shaped a silhouette of a human, had been hollowed out from her repeated shots.

Satisfied, she decided to empty the clip on her gun to reload it, intending to aim for the head next.

Just as the door to the shooting range slid open, Ainsley turned her head expecting to see Colton or even Alexa enter the room. The three of them spent more time in here than anyone else. But to her surprise, Kendra entered instead.

The moment the door close behind her, Kendra walked over to the empty stall beside Ainsley. Her eyes trailed to the paper target down the range and she nodded, equally impressed as Ainsley was. "Nice job."

"Thanks. You don't usually hang out in here." Ainsley carefully slipped the bullets into place in the magazine.

Kendra leaned against the post beside Ainsley. "I wanted to see how you've been doing. We haven't gotten the chance to talk much since your sister got here."

Ainsley shrugged. "I'm fine."

Kendra and Ainsley had an understanding that she didn't have with most people here. When the group found Ainsley all those years ago, Kendra took her under their wing with no questions. Even under the terms and conditions that 16-year-old Ainsley put in place. Kendra could never replace Ainsley's mother, and she had no intention of replacing her, but from time-to-time Ainsley just needed some sort of maternal figure. Luckily, Kendra had no problem being that figure to all of the spies here.

"Have you two had the chance to talk?"

Ainsley couldn't help the scoff that escaped her body and she cocked an eyebrow at Kendra. "Talk about what, exactly?"

"About why you left," she said. When Ainsley started to shake her head at this, Kendra went on, "She has questions, Ainsley. You would too if it were her."

Ainsley slammed down the empty gun and faced her. "You don't know what goes on inside my head. You have no idea what I would do if I were in her shoes."

"Then try putting yourself in them."

"Oh please." She turned back to the gun. "I'm not going to apologize for the things I've done. I helped a lot of people by leaving, you know that for a fact. Carmen doesn't have to know every single reason I have for doing things."

Kendra sighed. "I'm not asking you to apologize. But as angry as Carmen may be with you, she missed you all that time you were gone. And I know that you missed her even if you won't admit to things like that."

Silence.

Disturbing and anger filled silence.

Ainsleys lack of a reaction made Kendras stomach turn, either Ainsley would bottle this up or she would lash out. Kendra had no intention of being within a mile radius when that happened.

Just as Kendra was beginning to make her way to the keypad to open the door, Ainsley finally spoke up and changed the subject, "I want to train Carmen on guns."

Kendra half-turned her body to her. "Colton is her partner, he can do that."

"Colton is a good shot, but I'm better and you know that." She motioned to the target that lay at the end of the firing rage before she threw a curious glance in Kendra direction. "You really don't know who put the bounty on Carmen, do you?"

"No." Kendra shook her head. "But I have a theory about how it could make its way around without people knowing a direct source of where it came from. I think that whoever did this is powerful, and they must be powerful and feared enough that they know how to stay hidden. I think that they told their closest allies on the black market, perhaps people who also have underlying issues with Carmen and her tech. After that, those allies must have passed it down the grapevine until it reached the some of America's biggest dealers."

Ainsley nodded. "Makes sense as to why Carmen didn't hear about it until Ryder Hanson. He's a pretty big arms dealer, and that guy that Carmens friend killed was a well-known drug dealer. That's why they would know about it. So, you think we need to hunt down and interrogate all the major dealers and distributors on the black market?"

Kendra chuckled. "If only it were that easy. Half of the major dealers or distributors are smart enough to keep their tracks covered, or we don't have incriminating evidence on them yet. Plus, Carmen listed some of them as the ones she wants to protect."

"That doesn't mean that they want to protect her," Ainsley stated in rebuttal. "Who's to say that they didn't hear five million dollars and decide loyalty wasn't enough to keep them from killing her the next chance they get?"

"There lies the problem," Kendra agreed. "I don't want to risk Carmens safety by bringing these people right to her. For now, I want to keep her as out of sight as much as possible."

"Aside from the mission you're sending her on with Clayton?"

Kendra grinned. "That's more for my own amusement, and their own good of course. They need to learn to work together."

Ainsley didn't argue, in fact she thought it was a great idea. The two couldn't even breathe around each other without one of them bitching about it.

Kendra laid her hand on the palm scanner and waited for the door to open. "I'll think about you training Carmen. No promises," she said over her shoulder to Ainsley before exiting the room.

When the door closed, Ainsley went back to loading her gun. She lifted the weapon, training it on the same target she was shooting at minutes ago. This time she aimed for the head, firing and pretending that the target was whoever placed the bounty on her twin.
