Phone Calls
Latino Billionaire 1: The Billionaire's Heart
TINA
When I woke up the next morning, the bed was empty.
Alejandro was by the window making a call. He was dressed in white boxer shorts that hugged those perfect buns to perfection. I smiled as I stared at his toned back, hoping heâd come back to bed. I couldnât hear what he was saying, but I could see the frown on his side view. I presumed it was business.
I wondered if the power had come on yet. I could check the news on my phone, or I could wait for him to tell me.
When he finished the call, he spun around and his eyes landed on me. He smiled and made his way back to the bed.
âGood morning.â I felt his weight in the bed as he sat beside me. He put a hand on my leg. âDid you sleep well?â
âYou know the answer to that,â I replied with a lazy chuckle. âHow could I not, after all of that exercise we had?â
My laughter seemed to be infectious, and he laughed along.
âWho was that?â I asked, referring to the call he made earlier. âIs the power grid back up?â
âDiego told me the power has been restored. Everything is back to normal.â His eyebrows formed a straight line.
âOh, thank goodness.â
âAre you relieved about the power or just looking forward to getting out of here and going home?â He feigned sadness.
âAlejandro!â My eyes widened. âHow could you assume something like that? Iâm not so eager to just leave like thatââ
I saw the cheeky smile on his face. I knew he was teasing me.
âNot funny.â I smacked his forearm.
âI wouldnât agree.â He leaned his forehead against mine. âItâs always fun to tease you and see a frown once in a while.â
âIf I didnât know better, I would say you were a closet sadist, the way you like to see me pout.â
âWell, you know better,â he said with a boyish grin. âConsidering the fun weâve had a couple of times.â
I turned beet red at his sentence.
Just then my phone rang. I spotted my skirt and fished it out. My eyes glazed in surprise and anger as I saw the name on the screen. It was a name I thought I would never see again.
Mike.
I mentally smacked myself in the head. Why the hell had I not deleted his number? I felt Alejandroâs eyes on me as I picked up the phone.
âWhat the hell do you want?â I snapped.
âTina, honey, itâs me, Mike.â His attempt at charm was pathetic.
âOf course, I know itâs you. Surprisingly, I was dumb enough to not delete your number,â I said.
Alejandroâs eyebrows had perked up in interest.
âTina, please listen to me,â Mike said. âLook, Iâm sorry about what happened that day. I want us to get back together. You mean a lot to me. Youâre one of the best women out there.â
âSo you knew this and you still decided you had to toy around with that bitch?â I shook my head, laughing grimly. âCan you hear yourself right now? So, whatâs happened now? The skank left you? Trying to come crawling back, you useless excuse of a man? Whatâs the story this time?â
âTina, please, Iââ
âGet this into your thick skull,â I said, cutting him off. âDonât get your hopes up. We are never getting back together. I didnât just throw you out of my apartment; I threw you out of my life. I should have also thrown you out of my contact list, but I forgot to do so. Anyway, thanks for giving me a reminder.â
âTinaââ
âGood riddance and fuck off.â I cut the call.
Angrily, I scrolled to my contact list. I blocked and then deleted his number. After what Iâd been through with him, I was done with garbage.
Alejandroâs eyes were on me when I looked up.
âEx?â he asked.
I nodded and ran a hand through my hair, feeling like I was going to explode.
âHe seems very persistent?â Alejandro said.
I looked up and I could see the anger in his eyes. Then the anger went down, and I saw the old Alejandro resurfaceâthat blank, stoic look. That scared me more than the anger ever could.
âHey.â I cupped his face. âI know that look, and I donât like it. I donât care how persistent he is. Weâre not getting back together. I live by the saying, once bitten, twice shy. Youâre the one I want.â
The frown disappeared from his face, and he sighed.
âI just donât want to see you get hurt,â he whispered. âThe funny thing is I donât know why. Tina, I donât even know myself anymore. I never get into relationships with women like this. I think Iâm losing myself. Iâm losing my edge.â
I smiled and kissed his nose.
âNo, youâre not losing yourself,â I said. âItâs the contrary.â
âWhat do you mean?â He raised an eyebrow at me. I realized that he still didnât know that his aunt had told me everything. I was willing to keep it that way.
âItâs a secret.â I stuck out my tongue at him. âCall it my feminine intuition. I just know things.â
âOh Tina, you donât want to go that path with me.â I saw his eyes darken with a mixture of lust and mischief.
âWhat do you mean?â I asked.
I gasped when I felt his hand slip under the cover and grab my left breast. He squeezed it softly, and I moaned.
âIâll just have to force your secrets out of you.â He pushed me gently to the bed and straddled me.
I was so going to be late to work again.

As soon as I took a seat at my desk, Kelly accosted me.
âWell, someone was fucked today,â she said in greeting.
âJesus, Kelly!â I sent her an embarrassed glare.
âWhat, just saying.â She shrugged. âSo how was it this time? Was it doggy style? Cowgirl? Were there chains and whips involved? You look like you havenât seen the light of day in ages.â
I rolled my eyes at her and switched on my computer.
âIt was okay.â I tried to keep a straight face but felt my cheeks heating up. Who was I kidding? It was amazing.
I nearly fell off my seat as I thought about how powerful Alejandro was on top of me. He was full of vigor today, and I wondered if my voice had been loud enough for the other occupants of the house to hear. I didnât want his father hearing us.
âSo, something did happen.â Kelly was laughing hysterically. âI can practically see your face trying to explode. I hope he didnât go too rough on you. Looks like youâre still able to walk, so thereâs room to grow.â
I smacked her shoulder. âCould you have any more of a potty mouth?â
âNo.â She giggled.
All was silent for a while. I glanced at her and discovered a faraway look in her eyes.
âIt looks like something is going on with you too,â I said.
She blinked rapidly and faced me.
âWhat do you mean?â she asked.
âDonât play dumb, Kelly,â I said. âIâm just as sharp as you, and it looks like we have the same kind of intuition.â
âYou are something else.â She chuckled nervously.
âDonât try to change the topic.â I wagged a finger at her. âWell, what is it?â
She cleared her throat and glanced around the office. I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. Oh, so now she was being considerate of what others might be able to hear.
âI think things may begin to get serious with Tito and me.â She finally dropped the news.
âHold on, you mean you guys are dating?â My eyes widened. I was happy for her.
âNot dating per se. Weâve gone on a few outings. Thatâs it. We havenât even kissed yet, but weâve held hands.â
âAnd?â I prodded.
âHe seems genuine.â I could see the distant look in Kellyâs eyes. âFor once, he didnât make any flirtatious comments. I didnât see the usual lecherous look in his eyes. He seemed soâ¦serious. And when he smiled, it was so sweet. Who would have thought? Maybe heâs been watching your Alejandro change.â
âIt seems like he might be getting genuinely interested in you.â I smiled. I wanted her to be happy.
âSo you think we should go further?â
I was torn. âI think you should give it some time. You do realize he runs a strip club and sees lots of women there every day.â
She narrowed her eyes. âSo youâre saying I wonât stack up against the competition?â
âWhat, no! Thatâs not what I mean,â I replied. âIâm saying you should be cautious. Donât push him away, see where it goes, and keep your wits about you. These guys can smell gold diggers, but I know thatâs not you.â
âThanks.â She smiled. âYou rock.â
I returned her smile. âDonât I know it.â
My cellphone rang, and I picked it up to see my motherâs picture on the screen. She never called during the workday. Something was wrong.
âMom?â I said. âHow are you?â
I wanted to say, âWhat is it, whatâs happened?â But my mind was a cloud of worry. Was it my father? Had he fallen or something? Did they need money for his insulin?
âKelly,â I could hear her sniff on the other end. My heart jolted immediately. âYou need to come back. Your father needs you. Iâm sorry to interrupt you at work. I know itâs a new job.â
âWhat!â I shrieked, drawing a worried look from Kelly.
âWhatâs going on?â she mouthed.
I signaled for her to be quiet.
âMom, what happened?â I turned my attention back to the phone.
âI donât know. I donât know how to explain it. He was working on the air conditioner, and he just collapsed.â
âIâll be there,â I said.
âAll right, weâre expecting you, baby.â
I cut the call and quickly stood up.
âWhat happened?â Kelly asked.
âItâs my dad,â I replied. âHe collapsed.â
âWhat!â
âI canât explain details now. I need to see him.â I didnât even know if I should go home or go straight to a hospital. Of course, theyâd be in the hospital. Iâd just have to call my mom to be sure which one. But first, I had to get out of the building.
I made my way around the desk toward Alejandroâs office.
âWill our boss be okay with you taking a leave?â Kelly asked from behind me.
I raised an eyebrow at her.
âPoint taken.â An embarrassed look appeared on her face.
I arrived at Alejandroâs office door and knocked.
âCome in,â he called from the other end.
I opened the door and walked in. He was busy signing a stack of letters, and his desk was covered with files. A steaming cup of coffee sat beside his laptop.
âTina?â His eyes grew concerned when he noticed my worried demeanor. âIs everything okay?â
âSorry to disturb you,â I said.
âDonât apologize,â he replied. âSomething tells me this is important. Whatâs the matter?â
Perceptive as ever.
âI need to take a few days off now,â I replied. âMy dad collapsed, and heâs in the hospital. I need to go see him.â
âWhat?â Alejandroâs eyes widened in shock. âHow? What happened?â
âMy mom didnât explain the full picture, but I have to be there.â My eyes brimmed with tears. âI have to see him.â
âYour request is granted.â Alejandro stood up.
I teared up and rushed to envelop him in a tight hug.
âThank you!â I wailed. âThank you so much.â
âWe donât have time.â He gently pulled me back and gazed into my face.
âWhat do you mean âweâ?â
âIâm coming with you.â
I was shocked. He didnât know my family. Why would he want to come?
âBut the companyââ
âWonât collapse if Iâm not around for one day.â He put a finger over my lips. âA life is at stake at the moment.â
He wrapped his hand around my shoulder as we moved to the door.
âLetâs hurry.â
