Chapter 18
Alpha Loren Book 4
ELLA
We soon pulled up on Rosa and Antonioâs long drive.
Rosa came out of the house and greeted her excited grandchildren with delight.
âElla!â she said as I lifted Zacharias out of his travel seat, and Luca did the same with Stefano. âWe werenât expecting you.â
âYes, Iâm sorry to spring this upon you,â I began, âbut something has happened. Is it all right if the kids stay for a night? Maybe two?â
Cato, Mathias, and Silas bombarded Antonio, who had just joined his mate on the drive as Rosa took Zacharias from me.
âOf course, but what has happened?â she asked with a concerned look. âWhereâs Leo?â
âBambinos, why donât you take your stuff upstairs?â I suggested.
They all nodded and ran up the stairs to the rooms on the first floor that they usually stayed in.
âLeoâs been arrested,â I began.
Both of their faces dropped three miles.
âArrested? What? Why?â Antonio asked.
âAndrea Martinez is alive,â I stated.
Their faces dropped three more miles.
âBut Leo shot himââ Rosa said.
âSomehow the bastard survived,â I replied. âAnd now heâs accused Leo of attempted murder, abduction, and involvement in drug trafficking, and who knows what heâll do next.â
âOh fuck,â Antonio said.
âElla, come in,â Rosa said, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder. âIâll get a pot of coffee on.â
When the coffee was made, the three of us sat around the table trying to decide what to do while Luca entertained the kids.
âYou shouldnât have left your mate,â Antonio stated, after minutes of silent thinking.
âAntonio!â Rosa exclaimed.
âNone of this would have happened. Have you not noticed by now that when you are away from him, things turn to shit?â he said, slamming his hand onto the table.
âNow is not the time,â Rosa said, putting her hand on his.
âThings turn to shit whatever I do. My own mate fucking killed my brother,â I argued.
Antonio didnât like being argued with. No one did it except me, which was why he had never been too fond of me.
âIt doesnât matter what happened in the past. We just need to concentrate on getting Leo out of there and dealing with this Andrea man, okay?â Rosa said as Luca came into the kitchen with Cato, Silas, Mathias, Francesca, and Marie.
âElls, is it all right if I take them out to play in the woods?â he asked.
I nodded.
âDonât let them go too far,â I said, putting my head in my hands.
When I heard the door shut, I looked up at Rosa and Antonio and sighed.
âIâve bailed him out before. Iâm sure I can do it again,â Antonio stated.
âWhen he was sixteen and arrested for stupid things like vandalism. Not attempted murder, abduction, and involvement in drug trafficking!â Rosa replied.
âThatâs exactly what he said,â I replied. âHe also pointed out that itâs a federal investigation, just to add salt to injury.â
âAt least heâs not guilty of one of those things,â Rosa said as the front door opened.
âElla, you left your phone in the car, and itâs ringing,â Lucaâs voice called. âThereâs no caller ID, but maybe itâs Leo from the police station,â he added, appearing in the kitchen.
He passed it to me as it continued to buzz.
âHello?â
There was a few momentsâ pause before a voice came through the line that filled me with pure dread.
âHola, Blanca,â Andreaâs devilish voice slurred.
âI thought youâd be a little lonely without your alpha. You know I have men coming for you? Now that Leonardo Loren is out of the picture, they shouldnât have any trouble getting you either.â
âHow are you still alive?â I asked, after a nervous gulp.
âSee, Blanca, your mate may be the most feared man in the world, an excellent fighter, strong, powerful, smart, yada yadaâ¦but he doesnât know much about guns.
âPretty good for a beginner, but my heart and my brain are still just about intact. He missed. And you are going to pay for that.â
I gripped the phone in my hand and exchanged looks with Antonio.
âLet me speak to him,â Antonio said imperatively.
I handed him the phone as Rosa took my hand.
âMartinez, this is Antonio Loren,â he began.
âYou should know that you are well out of your depth. This pack and my son are not things that anyone with any sense should fuck around with. Take your men and go home before someone gets killed.â
âToo late for that,â Andrea replied. âYou see, I called the alpha just a few minutes ago, and he gave me his mateâs number.â
âWhy would he do that?â Antonio demanded.
âHe wanted me to give you a warning just in case six of his children were out playing alone in the woods or something.â
My eyes snapped up, and within seconds, I was on my feet, adrenaline surging through my veins. My head spun, and the sounds of the kidsâ laughter from the woods echoed in my mind.
Luca and Antonio both followed me, probably sharing the same churning sensation in their stomachs.
I sprinted out the door, to the end of the drive, and entered the woods. Despite the fading light, I spotted them among the tall trees immediately.
1, 2, 3â¦4â¦â¦5.
âWhereâs Cato!?â I screamed. âSilas, Mathias! Where is he?!â
âWe were playing hide-and-seek, but we havenât found him yet,â Silas replied, innocent of the danger they were in. Antonio and Rosa had now joined us.
âChildren, come back inside with me,â Rosa said, lifting Lili up. âNow.â
I raced farther into the forest, calling and calling for Cato. Praying and praying that he was just good at hide-and-seek.
Just as Rosa reached the edge of the forest, we heard a scream. A childlike, high-pitched wail.
And then the sound of a car engine.
âCato!â I howled, sprinting in the direction of the sounds.
I soon reached another road. The leaves blown by the vehicle had not yet settled, and the growl of the engine was still deafening.
A few seconds later, another car zoomed past. My car with Luca in it.
My heart thudded against my rib cage as I fumbled with my phone, desperately looking for Blairâs number.
âClose the borders,â I ordered the second he picked up.
âWhat? Why?â he asked.
âLeoâs been arrested, and Catoâs been kidnapped. Whoever has him canât be allowed off territory,â I explained quickly. âIâll explain everything later but please just make sure it is done. And as fast as you can.â
âOkay. Iâll prepare the army too,â he replied in a typically Blair calm tone, before hanging up.
How the fuck was he calm?
A few seconds later, Antonio was standing beside me.
âThey have my son,â I whispered. âMy baby. Heâs only seven years old. How could they be so cruel?â
Antonio didnât say anything.
âWhy am I just standing here?â I asked myself, taking a step in the direction of the cars.
âAre you insane?â Antonio said, finally speaking up as he grabbed my wrist. âThis man wants you, yes?â
I nodded.
âThen donât fall into their trap and go somewhere safe. Luca, Blair, and I will deal with this,â he replied. âThe last thing we need is a kidnapped lunaâ¦again.â
âAntonio, they have my son,â I said, choking on my tears. âMy son.â
âAnd we will get him back,â he replied. âYou know that Leo wouldnât want you in any more danger.â
âAnd you know that is not a good enough reason to stand back while my son gets kidnapped,â I snapped. âIâm not just going to let the âmenâ deal with it!â
âFine,â he said with a sigh, knowing he wasnât going to win this. âGo to the police station and report it to the officers and then tell Leo.â
I nodded. âOkay.â
That I will do.
