Chapter 4
The Kid and the Interesting Ride
We walked up to his door and I knocked. After a few seconds of silence I heard a boyâs voice tell me to come in. I pushed the door open and peeked in. A little boy was laid out on the bed in his light blue pajamas. He looked over at me and a bright smile lit his face.
âAngelâ he said as he sat up. I walked to his side and sat down on the edge of the bed and hugged him.
âHow are you my Little Monsterâ I said. He giggled as I poked his stomach.
âIâm goodâ he said. I smiled softly. I knew he was lying, that he didnât want me to worry about him. So I let it go. We sat and talked for a while and played around. It wasnât until we heard the loud sound of thunder that I realized I would have to walk home in the dark while it was storming. I sighed and looked over at Trever.
âI have to go Little Man. I need to get homeâ I said. He frowned,
âDo you have to walkâ he asked. I smiled. For a seven year old he sure was smart. I nodded.
âLet my brother drive you. He will be here in a little bitâ he said concern shining in his dark green eyes. I shook my head.
âItâs alright. I donât want to bother your big brotherâ I said.
âBother me with whatâ a familiar voice asked. I gasped and turned to see none other than Luka himself. He was leaning against the door frame staring at me.
âBig Brotherâ Trever said with a smile. Luka smiled back and walked over to his little brother. I stood from the bed and walked to the other side of the room keeping my distance from the two of them. How had I not noticed the resemblance? Both of them had dark black hair and the same dark green hypnotizing eyes. I smiled as I watched the two of them play around. This was a side of the bad boy that no one ever saw. I lifted my camera and took a picture. As Luka saw the flash his smiled faded and he turned to look at me. My eyes widened in fear and I stepped back. I may be a fighter and know how to protect myself butâ¦my past was not bright and when a male was angry it made me fear for my life.
âI-Iâm so s-sorryâ I stuttered. Trever giggled.
âItâs ok Angelâ he said.
âI want to see the picture. Can I have itâ he asked. I smiled and slowly walked to the other side of the bed watching Luka out of the corner of my eye. I showed Trever the picture and he laughed.
âPlease let me have itâ he pleaded.
âI need it for a project, but Iâll give you a copy of it to I promiseâ I said/ Trever smiled and hugged me, I flinched at the contact but smiled as I pulled away. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Luka frown. I really needed to go before he starts asking questions I donât want to answer, ever. I cleared my throat and looked down at Trever.
âI have to go Little Man. Iâll see you the next time I come over, alrightâ I asked. Trever frowned but nodded. I leaned down and kissed his forehead.
âIâll come back soon and when I do I want to see some of your amazing drawingsâ I said. Trever was an artist and not like other little kids his age. He loves to draw and heâs really good at it, but he doesnât like to show his art work. Only to me and his family. He wonât even show the nurse thatâs taken care of him since he was admitted into the hospital. Trever nodded and smiled.
âI canât wait to show youâ he said. I nodded.
âI canât wait to see them, but I have to go nowâ I said leaning down to kiss his forehead again. He placed his hand over his forehead after I had kissed him and I frowned.
âWhat are you doingâ I asked. Instead of him answering it was Luka who answered.
âHeâs saving it. He places his hand over the kiss to make sure it stays till the next time you see himâ he said staring at Trever with a small smile.
âSomeone has a crushâ he said. Trever made a disgusted face.
âEw no! I want her to be my sissy not my girlfriendâ he said. I giggled.
âI would love to be your sisterâ I said. Trever smiled.
âMaybe one day my brother will marry you and you can beâ he said. My eyes widened and I blushed. Luka chuckled.
âAlright you need sleep Little Manâ he said as he hugged Trever and tucked him into bed. I started walking out of the room when I heard Trever say one last thing.
âBubba can you take Angel home. I donât want her to walkâ he said. I turned and stared at Trever. He was looking up at his big brother, but his brother was looking at me.
âYou have to walkâ he asked. I nodded.
âYou walk here and then walk home every dayâ he asked. I shook my head.
âI donât come every day, only when I canâ I whispered. He nodded.
âIâll take care of her Little Manâ Luka said. Trever smiled.
âThank youâ he said sleepily. I smiled at him one last time before walking out the door and down the hall to the front entrance. I walked to the front desk and told them I was going home. The nurses there smiled and told me to have a good night. I nodded and started to walk outside when a hand grabbed my upper arm. I yelped in surprise and flinched away from the touch trying not to fight against the person. The hand left my arm and I looked up to see Luka staring at me in surprise, his hands raised above his head showing me he meant no harm. I looked down in embarrassment.
âIâm sorryâ I mumbled. He shook his head.
âItâs alright, but I meant what I said. Iâm taking you home. Iâm not letting you walk home in this stormâ he said. I shook my head.
âIâll be fine, itâs not that farâ I said. He sighed and shook his head.
âNo Iâm not letting you walk, come onâ he said walking past me to the doors.
âNow stay here, and if you start walking then Iâll drive all around the city till I find youâ he warned before disappearing into the darkness. I waited by the doors till I heard the sound of a car driving up. I looked out the door and saw a black Audi drive up. My eyes widened as the window rolled down and Luka looked out at me.
âGet inâ he said before rolling the window back up. I shook my head and quickly climbed in.
âAddressâ he said. I told him my address and we sat in silence, but after a minute he spoke.
âDo you normally go see my brotherâ he asked. I nodded.
âI go to the hospital and talk to all the kids. The ones that feel well enough go to the music room and we all sing togetherâ I said smiling at the thought. Luka nodded.
âWhy does he call you Angelâ he asked. I laughed.
âBecause the nurses called me an angel for coming to play with the children and it sort of stuck, it was easier then saying my real nameâ I said. He nodded.
âMy brother talks about you a lot. Like how you come and see him and play with him, sing and draw with himâ he chuckled âhe tells me youâre not very good at drawing and that heâs teaching youâ he said. I blushed and looked down at my lap.
âYeah he isâ I mumbled. Luka laughed but then became silent.
âLook, that picture you took todayâ¦donât put that on the project. I donât want everyone knowing about my brother being sick. I donât want their pityâ he said. I looked over at him in understanding.
âI understand, but is it ok if I print it and give it to Trever, or you couldâ I said. Luka nodded.
âThatâs fineâ he answered stiffly. I nodded and the rest of the ride was made in silence. When we pulled up to my house I sighed in relief as I saw my momâs care parked outside. I turned to Luka and nodded.
âThanksâ I whispered before rushing to the house. I unlocked the door and walked inside. I looked out the window to see Luka drive away and sighed. I really needed to be careful or I would fall for him, and falling for the bad boy was not a good idea. Not with my past. Not with my life.
