Chapter 2025
Madeline Crawford and Jeremy Whitman
Carterâs action was devoid of tenderness. He even looked a little brutal.
After Lillian was pushed away, she looked at Carter with a look of loss on her face.
Carterâs gaze darkened. âWhat are you looking at, huh? You canât speak, so do your ears also not work? I said thereâs none for you, donât you understand?â
âCarter.â Shirley could not stand Carterâs attitude. â Carter, are you sick in the head? Youâre a grown man and youâre bullying a little girl?â
Carter scoffed nonchalantly when he heard Shirley scolding him.
âItâs her fault that sheâs Jeremy and Evelineâs child. You canât blame me for that.â
After saying that disdainfully, he turned around and pushed Shirleyâs wheelchair to the dining room.
Lillian sat on the sofa alone and silently stared at Carter and Shirleyâs back.
She lifted her hand to touch her flat stomach. âYeah, Iâm a little hungry.
âUsually, Fabian will eat dinner with me at this time. âBut now, I can only go hungry.â
Lillian blinked her clear, big eyes and thought to herself.
âWho is this man?
âWhy did he bring me here?
âIt seems like he hates my mommy and daddy.â There were a lot of questions in Lillianâs little brain.
Dispirited, she lowered her eyelids.
âMommy, Daddy.
âI miss Mommy, Daddy, and Jack.â
Shirley did not have the appetite to eat now. She looked at Carter who was eating mechanically, and then she tidied her cutleries and took some spaghetti and meatballs before turning her wheelchair away.
âWhat are you doing?â Carter called out to her. âI told you sheâs not allowed to eat.â
Shirley stopped her wheelchair and did not turn around to look at Carter.
âIâm already obeying you, but you still insist on hurting this little girl.â
âHurting? What kind of hurt is this? Will she die without one or two meals?â
âShe wonât, but whatâs the difference between this and abuse?â
Shirley, no longer in the mood to argue with Carter, moved her wheelchair to the living room.
When Lillian heard the noise, she lifted her little head and saw Shirley coming over to her.
âIt seems that this woman doesnât know how to walk, so sheâs always sitting in this special chair.
âShe also has a scar on her face, but itâs not scary because her smile is warm and friendly.â
âLily, have some dinner.â
Shirley smiled and handed her the plate and fork.
Lillian looked at the plate of spaghetti and meatballs. She did not know whether she should take it or not.
âGo on, donât be scared. I wonât hurt you.â
Shirley comforted Lillianâs little soul and emotions.
When she saw Lillian hesitating to reach out, Shirley placed the plate and fork on the coffee table.
âLily, youâll stay with me in the next few days. You might not be used to this, but donât worry, I will take care of you. If you donât feel well, you tell me by writing on a piece of paper.â
As she said that, Shirley took out a piece of paper and a pen from the drawer of the coffee table and handed them to Lillian.
Lillian reached out for the paper and pen before lowering her head to start writing.
