Chapter 43: Moments of Reflection
Beyond the Spotlight
The countdown to the NAACP Image Awards was in full swing, and Aaronâs apartment buzzed with the hum of preparation. Kimberly sat on the couch, a planner open on her lap as she jotted down ideas for their outfits. Aaron, meanwhile, was pacing the living room, practicing lines for an upcoming audition.
âDo you think itâs too bold if I go with something metallic?â Kimberly asked, glancing up at Aaron.
He paused mid-line, his brow furrowed in concentration. âHuh? Sorry, what?â
Kimberly smirked. âI said metallic. For the Image Awards.â
Aaron set down his script, finally focusing on her. âMetallic? Youâd look stunning. But then again, youâd make a paper bag look like couture.â
She laughed, throwing a pillow at him. âCharmer.â
Aaron caught the pillow and tossed it back, joining her on the couch. âWhatâs the theme for this year?â
ââCelebrating Black Excellence in Entertainment,ââ she replied. âItâs fitting, considering your nominations.â
Aaron shook his head, a modest smile gracing his lips. âOur nominations. Donât forget, Kelvâs in the mix too. Weâre all making waves this year.â
Kimberly reached over, lacing her fingers with his. âYouâve earned it, Aaron. And itâs just the beginning. I hope you see that.â
He studied her face for a moment, his expression unreadable. âSometimes it still feels surreal, you know? Like, Iâve been grinding for years, and now itâs finally paying off. But itâs not just about me. Itâs about us, too.â
Kimberly tilted her head. âWhat do you mean?â
Aaron took a deep breath, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. âThisâwhat we haveâgrounds me. Keeps me focused. I donât think Iâd be handling all this success the same way if it werenât for you.â
Her heart swelled at his words, but before she could respond, his phone buzzed on the coffee table.
âKelvin again,â Aaron said, rolling his eyes playfully as he answered. âWhatâs up, bro?â
Kelvinâs voice came through the speaker, full of excitement. âMan, Iâve got a surprise planned for Kehlani, and I need your help pulling it off.â
Aaron raised an eyebrow, putting the call on speaker. âA surprise? What kind of surprise?â
âA whole day dedicated to her. Brunch, a spa treatment, and then dinner at that rooftop spot she loves,â Kelvin said. âYou know Iâm not great at planning this stuff, so I need some advice.â
Kimberly chimed in, âThat sounds perfect, Kelvin. Just make sure itâs personalâsomething that shows her how much thought you put into it.â
âExactly,â Kelvin agreed. âAnd speaking of personal, Aaron, donât think I didnât notice you dodging my question earlier. When are you putting a ring on it?â
Aaron froze, glancing at Kimberly, who was pretending to focus on her planner but was clearly eavesdropping.
âKelv, youâre supposed to be the one asking for advice, not stirring the pot,â Aaron said, his tone light but firm.
Kelvin laughed. âAlright, alright. But seriously, man, donât wait too long. Sheâs a keeper.â
Aaron ended the call with a shake of his head, but Kelvinâs words lingered in the air. As the evening wore on, he couldnât help but think about themâabout the life he and Kimberly were building, and the steps theyâd take to make it even stronger.
For now, though, they had plenty to celebrate and even more to look forward to. And with the awards just weeks away, the future felt brighter than ever.
The evening transitioned into a quiet lull as Kimberly and Aaron sat together on the couch, the city lights casting a soft glow through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Kimberlyâs focus had returned to her planner, but Aaronâs mind wandered back to Kelvinâs parting words.
âKim?â he asked suddenly, breaking the comfortable silence.
She looked up from her notes, tilting her head slightly. âYeah?â
Aaron hesitated, his usual confidence wavering for a brief moment. âDo you ever think about what the next step for us looks like?â
Kimberly blinked, surprised by his question. She set the planner aside, giving him her full attention. âOf course I do. I mean, weâve talked about our goals, our careers...but if youâre asking about us specifically, then yeah, I think about it a lot.â
Aaron leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. âIâve been thinking about it too. A lot more lately, actually. Especially with everything happeningâthe nominations, the projectsâit feels like weâre in this whirlwind. But youâre the constant in all of it, Kim. And I want to make sure I donât take that for granted.â
Kimberlyâs heart skipped a beat. âAaron, you donât have to worry about that. Youâve always made me feel like I matter, like we matter. I never doubt how you feel about me.â
He turned to face her, his dark eyes searching hers. âGood. Because I want to do this right. I want us to build something solid, something that lasts. But I also donât want to rush it.â
Kimberly smiled, reaching out to place a hand on his cheek. âWeâre already building it, Aaron. Every day. Whether weâre planning a gala, rehearsing lines, or just sitting here like this, weâre laying the foundation. And when the timeâs right for the next step, weâll know.â
Aaron covered her hand with his, leaning into her touch. âYou always know what to say.â
Kimberly grinned. âThatâs part of my charm.â
They shared a laugh, the moment feeling both light and meaningful.
Suddenly, Aaronâs phone buzzed again. This time, it was a text. He picked it up, reading it aloud. âFrom my agentââDonât forget, your fitting for the awards is tomorrow at noon. Donât be late.ââ
Kimberlyâs eyes lit up. âI canât wait to see what theyâve picked out for you. Something sharp, no doubt.â
Aaron smirked. âYouâll have to wait and see. But what about you? Have you decided on your look yet?â
âI have a few options in mind,â Kimberly said, tapping her chin thoughtfully. âBut Iâm waiting to hear more about the theme for the Met Gala. I want something that can carry me through both events if needed.â
Aaron nodded, impressed by her foresight. âMultitasking queen. No wonder youâre so good at what you do.â
Kimberly chuckled, leaning back into the cushions. âFlattery will get you everywhere, Mr. Pierre.â
As the night wore on, they continued to talk, their conversation weaving between work, dreams, and the shared life they were building. The future felt like an open book, with chapters still unwritten, but they were ready to fill the pagesâtogether.
