ephemeral flowers
Gone was time • poetry collection
the spring sun glows warmly,
shedding its comforting light upon me.
i get the message that it's time to grow,
after so long of having to lay low.
slowly my stem emerges from the ground,
coupled with a few dainty leaves all around.
with time little buds form at my tip
as little creatures wait anxiously at my lips.
a few more days and my petals burst open,
declaring to the world that i have finally awoken.
pretty white petals with specks of yellow,
nectar sweet, silky and mellow.
Hummingbirds, butterflies and honeybees,
gather around to admire my ephemeral beauty.
feeling love and warmth everyday,
- a blissful joy i am unable to convey.
until one day when my light is blocked,
by a canopy of trees with leaves bursting forth.
hidden away in the shadows of darkness,
never have i ever felt so helpless.
i shrug my leaves in resignation,
knowing that it was an unavoidable situation.
gradually my flowers wilt and fall,
while perennials flourish standing tall.
i slowly fade away as an ephemeral flower,
but don't worry about me; go enjoy your summer.
