chapter 16
Neighbor's Balcony
It was a crisp winter morning when Aarti stepped out onto her balcony, holding a steaming cup of chai. She glanced at Kabirâs side, where his lush green plants swayed gently in the breeze, the fairy lights from last night still wrapped around the railing. Her balcony, in comparison, felt dull and lifelessâa stark contrast to Kabirâs little paradise. Kabir leaned over the railing, already sipping his chai. âMorning, Mehta. Why do you look like someone stole your last piece of thepla?â Aarti sighed dramatically. âItâs my balcony. Look at yours, and then look at mine. Itâs like comparing a five-star garden to a deserted parking lot.â Kabir grinned. âFinally noticing, huh? Iâve been waiting for you to admit it. Your balcony needs serious help.â âThanks for the motivation,â Aarti said dryly. âNo, really,â Kabir said, putting his cup down. âWhy donât we fix it up? Iâll help you. Youâve got potential, Mehta.â The Plan BeginsAarti looked at him skeptically. âYouâll help? Whatâs the catch?â âNo catch,â Kabir said, raising his hands. âI just canât bear to see that sad excuse for a balcony every day. Itâs ruining my view.â Aarti rolled her eyes but couldnât help smiling. âAlright, Singh. Youâre on. Where do we start?â Kabir rubbed his hands together. âFirst, we make a plan. Plants, seating, and lighting. Letâs head to the nursery this weekend.â At the NurseryOn Saturday, Kabir and Aarti found themselves wandering through a sprawling plant nursery. Kabir, as usual, was brimming with energy, picking up different plants and lecturing Aarti like a pro. âThis oneâs a money plant,â Kabir explained, holding up a leafy vine. âEasy to care for and brings good luck.â Aarti raised an eyebrow. âAre you suggesting my luck needs help?â Kabir smirked. âIâm just covering all bases.â She shook her head and picked up a small flowering plant. âWhat about this one?â âGood choice,â Kabir said. âBut youâll need to water it daily. Think you can handle that?â âOf course,â Aarti said, rolling her eyes. âIâm not completely clueless, you know.â They spent hours at the nursery, picking out colorful pots, succulents, and herbs. Kabir insisted on adding fairy lights to the cart, despite Aartiâs protests. âTrust me,â Kabir said. âFairy lights make everything better. Youâll thank me later.â The Transformation DayBack at her apartment, Aarti stood on the balcony, hands on her hips. âAlright, Singh. Whatâs the first step?â âClear the clutter,â Kabir said, pointing to an old stool and some empty pots lying around. As they worked, Kabir kept up a steady stream of commentary. âSo, Mehta, how does it feel to finally invest some effort into your balcony?â âPretty good,â Aarti admitted. âThough I feel like Iâm being bossed around by a chef-turned-gardener.â âYou love it,â Kabir quipped, handing her a small spade. They arranged the plants along the railing and in corners, creating a vibrant mix of greens and colors. Kabir carefully strung the fairy lights, making sure they draped just right. âNow for the final touch,â Kabir said, placing a small table and two chairs in the center. âYour new chai corner.â Aarti stepped back and looked at the transformation. Her once-dull balcony was now a cozy, inviting space. The First Tea togatherThat evening, Kabir joined Aarti on her newly revamped balcony. She poured them both cups of chai, feeling a sense of pride as she looked around. âThis is⦠amazing,â Aarti admitted. âI didnât think it could look this good.â âI told you,â Kabir said, leaning back in his chair. âFairy lights. Theyâre magic.â Aarti laughed. âAlright, you win. Thank you, Kabir. I couldnât have done this without you.â With each passing moments they are making new memories and getting closer and closer. .
