18: Good Taste
Predatory
A/N: Iâm really sorry itâs been so long since Iâve updated, and that itâs kind of short. I moved recently and workâs been crazy, and then I had spring break but prioritized finishing . But that book is done now, so I should be devoting all of my writing time to this project. I hope you enjoy the update, and whether you do or not, Iâd love to hear what you think of this story!Of Love and Valor
CALLUM POV
âGoddamn it!â Xander curses after trippinâ over a tree root for âbout the seventh time since we started on the trails. Itâs darker than it usually is when we come out to train, but Drake and I ainât havinâ no trouble, and our eyes work same as Xanderâs. He just ainât awake yet, not that I blame him; itâs real early, way earlierân Xander likes to be outta bed.
âTell me again, Lover Boy, why weâre out here so fucking early?â Xander demands, glaring at Drake as we jog along our usual trail, the one that leads to the field where we can actually train, without havinâ to pretend to be normal humans.
âI thought itâd be a nice change of pace,â Drake answers with forced brightness, but he ainât foolinâ no one; heâs on high alert, scanninâ the trail and the forest for any sign this Nikki girl heâs into might be around.
âCome on, man. Lyinâ to yoâ friends ainât cool,â I needle him gently. âShe tell you she was gonâ be out here this early?â
âShe said if she was comingââ
âIF?!â Xander explodes.
ââthat it would be this early,â Drake continues as though Xander ainât spoken. âBut itâd all depend on studying and stuff. Their grad program sounds really intense.â
âMakinâ you reconsider law school?â I ask while Xander grumbles unintelligibly under his breath.
âHard to reconsider something I havenât 100% decided on in the first place. Thereâs a lot of factors to take into accountâ¦.â He mighta said more, but all of us hear footsteps up ahead, light but steady, getting closer, and his nerves are suddenly taut as a bowstring.
Then we round a bend in the trail and, shoâ nuff, there she is, jogginâ along our trail goinâ opposite way as us, green eyes flashinâ in the dark. Ainât nothin human bout that. Canât believe Drake ainât figured out what she is yet, in the time they spent together.
âNikki?â Drake calls, hardly daring to believe what should be perfectly obvious.
âDrake?â she replies, seeming equally surprised. âWasnât expecting you to make it out this early, especially not all of you. You said none of you like morningsââ
âWe donât,â Xander growls, âbut Drake here decidedââ
âThat we could all benefit from a little moâ variety in our routine,â I interrupt, shootinâ a warninâ glare at Xander. Drake would play wingman for you in a heartbeat, and he has before. Pull yoâ shit together.
âRight, what Callum said,â Xander amends with a glance my way that says Iâll be owinâ him somethinâ at some point. âSpeaking of, our usual workout routine has been getting kinda dull. You down to join us?â
âWell, that depends,â Nikki answers coyly, toyinâ with a piece of hair thatâs escaped her ponytail. âIâve been running for a while already, and Iâve only got so much time before I have to go get ready for classes and stuff. What are you planning for this morning?â
âNormally we do some running, strength training, martial arts,â Drake replies.
âI havenât done much with martial arts before. But Iâm always willing to learn. Have you warmed up at all?â
âJust the jog from the parking lot here.â
âLetâs run some, before we get to the more intense stuff,â I suggest. âDrake always lookinâ for someone new to race.â
âI donât thinkââ Drake starts.
âThatâs a great idea,â Xander interjects, eyes alight with mischief. âWish Iâd thought of it. Unless youâre not into competition?â
âIâm willing to give it a go,â Nikki responds. I canât quite read her expression, but her heartbeat picked up at the mention of racing, for all her tone is cool as a cucumber. More concerning is that I canât identify her scent. What the hell kinda creature donât even have a scent? âRight now, or after youâve had more chance to warm up?â
âIâd prefer the warmup, if itâs all the same to you,â Drake replies quickly. He nervous. Donât know why. Ainât like she stands a chance of beatinâ him. âThis trail makes a giant loop. Letâsâ¦take a lap or two, and then head to the usual spot, guys?â
âSounds good to me,â I agree.
âYeah, Iâm down,â Xander confirms.
âGreat. Lead the way,â Nikki smiles. Gotta give it to Drake, he got good taste. Sheâs smokinâ hot, and the way she moves as we all start jogginâ again, sort of in a clump with her anâ Drake side by side, is nothinâ short of extraordinary. Like sheâs made of liquid, but also powerful. Someone gotta ask, anâdif he too chicken, guess I can do it. But we gotta know.
âSo. Nikki,â I call from behind her and Drake. âI canât help wonderinâ if thereâs more to you than meets the eye.â
Itâs true, but also the agreed (anâ only legally acceptable) code phrase, among non-humans, to verify whether whoever we talkinâ to is considered supernatural or not.
If looks could kill, Drake would be murderinâ me with his eyes right now. Nikki, on the other hand, looks completely unfazed.
âWhat do your senses tell you? They surely do not lie,â she answers without missing a beat. Just as I thought. Supernatural, not human. But her exact species is still a mystery. I donât think Iâve ever encountered anyone like her in my life, even before Mom anâ me moved from Louisiana to Maine.
âThey still a bit confused, to be honest.â
Nikki laughs a little and picks up her pace; Drake matches her again in a couple steps. âMaybe the rest of our workout will provide them with more clarity.â
