Chapter 3-The Alpha

Sydney Carrington's POV

Today is the day. The day that I would be tied to Will for the rest of my life. I held Will's hand excitedly as we arrived at the ceremonial grounds together.

The other members of the pack followed behind and I could feel the excitement in the air.

Looking around, it was clear that the Alpha King was here due to the many soldiers and guards. I looked up at Will and a small smile graced my lips. Will looked incredibly handsome today with his white dress shirt and black pants.

I smoothed down my white dress and we walked to the designated area for our pack. The entire season lasted for a week and today was the first day.

Wolves had to put their names on a register and the pair who was going to be mated would have their names called out and together, they would make their way to the altar where they would say their vows and drink a potion where their souls would be bound together for the rest of eternity.

The pair would be seated separately and only be reunited at the altar. This represented the action of two souls lost before meeting each other but becoming one when they met. Some thought it was silly but I thought it was beautiful.

Alphas and betas who registered to take part in the ceremony were to be bound to their chosen mate first as a sign of power and respect. After, the rest of wolves were to go next.

Looking around, there didn't seem to be many alphas or betas participating this year but there were many couples milling around before the season started when the full moon was high in the sky. By now, the sun had already set, leaving us in the dark and torches were lit around the grassy plains.

All the packs in the world were here. We had seven, one in each continent. And each pack had an alpha and a beta. And all seven alphas reported to the alpha King who was not just an Alpha and who resided in the United Kingdom.

Will and I were in the North American pack and even though Will was only twenty-five and considered to be way too young to be beta in a pack, he was very capable and dedicated to his job. But me? I wasn't sure if I was able to deal with being the mate of a beta.

As if Will seemed to know what I was thinking, he held onto my hand tightly and rubbed comforting circles on my hand. Looking around once more, I caught sight of a tall muscular man standing in the shadows watching Will and I.

Somehow, the man seemed familiar but I was really sure I had not met him before in my life. Because I would have definitely remembered him. As he was in the shadows, I could only see the planes of his defined cheekbones and jaw and his silver-grey eyes that was observing Will and I.

"Why is Alpha Kingston looking at you?"

Will murmured in my ear and I stiffened before turning to him, "What? That's Alpha Kingston?" I questioned curiously, stunned.

Alpha Kingston was the alpha. After the Alpha King of course. He was notorious. He was the youngest Alpha to take over but he was the most successful among the rest. He was the alpha of Europe and apparently the most trusted alpha of the Alpha King. Rumours have even said that the Alpha King trusted him more than his own brother.

However, with all that success and ruthlessness and despite his age, Alpha Kingston was not someone to be trifled with. He hardly ever interacted with the other six packs and he had huge amounts of territory. His pack warriors were so well trained that whoever tried to declare war on him were guaranteed to lose.

Alpha Kingston was well known for being cruel and cold, merciless and emotionless. To say that most wolves and some alphas feared him wasn't an understatement.

"Yes. That's him. So why does he keep staring at you?" Will questioned a little annoyed and I laughed before stroking the side of his face gently, "Are you jealous?" I teased playfully.

Will snorted, "Maybe, but I know I don't have any cause to be. I'm just wondering why did he come here? He never came to the previous seasons before."

I shrugged, not really interested or curious, "Maybe he has found someone to be with." I said shortly, not wanting to discuss about an alpha who I wanted nothing to do with. Will frowned and opened his mouth to argue when the the crowd began to settle down.

"It's starting." I breathed out and I gave Will an excited grin. "I'll see you later." Will murmured in my ear and planted a kiss on my cheek before we parted ways.

I quickly found my seat and sat down before watching the first few alpha pairs recite their vows and be joined together for the rest of their lives with the Alpha King as witness.

An excited smile crossed my face at the thought of Will and I up there on the altar later on. I guess I must have been daydreaming for quite a while until everything and everyone turned silent and that is when I broke out of my thoughts.

I watched with vague interest as Alpha Kingston stepped onto the altar and I looked out for his mate to see that there weren't any.

I knew everyone was wondering who was the poor soul who wanted to be mated to someone like him but no one dared to speak. "Brendon, where's your chosen? There isn't a name on the list." The Alpha King spoke quietly to Alpha Kingston who stared coolly back at him.

"Her name is Sydney Carrington."

At that I gasped and my eyes widened. I could feel my heart stop and all the colour in my face turned white. "NO!" Will burst out and Alpha Kingston turned around to face him challengingly. And immediately, Will turned silent and he shot a horrified and worried gaze to me.

I could feel gazes of pity and horror on me and the Alpha King looked a bit perplexed. "Sydney, could you come up here please." I looked around panicky and my heart was beating so fast I was sure it would explode. I walked up to the altar slowly and reluctantly. All I wanted to do was to run off with Will but I couldn't because I was unable to deny a request made by the king.

Stepping onto the altar nervously, I was sure that all eyes were on us. I refused to meet the strong steady gaze of Alpha Kingston on me. Instead, I curtsied to the Alpha King and he spoke out, "Do you have your vows?"

At this, I panicked again before calming myself down, I was sure the King could stop whatever madness was going on. "I'm sorry sir but this is a mistake. I'm not supposed to be with Alpha Kingston here. I already have a chosen. He's a beta from my pack." I explained quietly and the Alpha King raised his eyebrows.

"Then what is all this with Alpha Kingston?" He questioned and I looked up at Alpha Kingston for a moment and met his gaze and said, "I don't know. I've never met him before-"

Before I could even finish my sentence, Alpha Kingston grabbed me and pulled me towards him and said lowly in my ear. "Sean right? He is now in Scotland for a school trip isn't he? Accidents do happen at times I'm afraid."

I froze and the thought of my fifteen year old brother dying because of an accident that could have been prevented by me made all the air rush out of my lungs. Alpha Kingston studied me blankly with his greyish silver eyes trained on me and I swallowed harshly.

Alpha Kingston was right. Sean was having a school trip in Edinburgh now. Oh god. "You wouldn't." I gasped and gaped disbelievingly at him. He simply raised an eyebrow at me and continued, "That depends on you." He stated coldly.

Oh god. He couldn't be serious could he? Was he really capable of murdering a fifteen year old? Looking at his face, I was given an answer. Yes he definitely could. Sean was my brother and I would do absolutely anything to keep him safe.

I turned to look at Will and my eyes teared up and it felt as if my heart broke for the both of us. There wasn't a doubt that I was going to sacrifice my happiness for the wellbeing of my brother. I'm so sorry Will. I thought brokenly and a tear spilled and rolled down my cheek. This was for Sean. I murmured back defeatedly, "What do I do?"

Alpha Kingston stared coolly at me, "Continue on with the ceremony." At his words, my face blanched and my hand trembled. My heartbeat sped up and I stared at him blankly unable to believe that was what I had to do. Could I really bond myself to the cruellest and coldest alpha in the world?

Oh god. I swallowed nervously and I shifted my head to look at Will when Alpha Kingston said sharply, "Don't look at him."

I looked up at him and stared at him with contempt but I remained silent. I could feel Will's gaze burning into my body and I held back a sob of sorrow. Sensing the tension, the Alpha King cleared his throat and turned to me, "Your vows?"

I couldn't believe I was actually going through with this. I had already prepared my vows for Will. They were carefully planned out and penned with all the emotion I had towards Will. But this man in front of me? I didn't even know him and there was no way I would be saying the vows meant for Will to him.

"I pledge to be with him for the rest of my life." I said tonelessly and stared down at the ground, feeling bile rise up in my throat from simply saying those words.

"I pledge to be with this woman for the rest of my life." Alpha Kingston repeated mine and I almost scoffed had it not been for the tears in my eyes. Soon, an antique gold cup with intricate carvings on it was brought towards me and I could feel my eyes blurring with more unshed tears.

This moment was supposed to be one of the happiest days of my life and not one full of sorrow and resentment. Could I really drink this knowing that there would be no turning back? The image of Sean flashed through my mind and I shut my eyes and exhaled.

I had to. For Sean-my baby brother. I took the cup gently the same time as Alpha Kingston did and we both took a sip of the potion.

After one sip, I pulled away and this time, I felt like throwing up. But waves of emotion crashed over me and it was as if I could feel my soul having a tie with another. The feeling was indescribable and I gasped at the sensation of it.

It was as if my soul was divided into two and given to another where another half of a person's soul was joined with the remaining piece from me.

Claps sounded and I could feel my eyes welling with tears. I turned to look for Will in the crowd but he wasn't there. Now, it was as if I could feel almost every emotion of Alpha Kingston and I hated it. I felt dirty as if I was violated emotionally, physically and mentally.

I looked around wildly, still unable to actually comprehend what just happened. I got off the altar and ran into the woods and collapsed onto the floor before throwing up.

And that was when I lost consciousness.
