Chapter 157
Love Is Fair
Chapter 157 Strange Gifts Jeremy nodded and scratched his head. âThis is the first time Iâve ever given a girl a birthday gift. I asked my aunt and she said girls like dresses, bags, jewelry, and stuff like that.
Iâve never seen you wear a necklace, so I made one for you.â Hailey looked down and noticed the cut on his finger. There was no band-aid on it, but there were obvious red marks. She was a jade carver.
She knew how such cuts were made. Jeremy just put his hand behind his back. âIâll be more skilled next time.â
Hailey just looked at him, not knowing what to say. In fact, she didnât lack jewelry. Her mother had left her countless jewels. Plus those from major brands and her father and brothers, she could even open a jewelry store. She was willing to wear necklaces, but they were too heavy and she only wore them on important occasions. This was the first time she had received a necklace made by a boy himself. She knew how hard it was to make something so small with these big, slender hands. The more casual he acted, the more pressure she felt. It was a weird feeling. Gail wiped her hands and rubbed the back of Jeremyâs head. âHeâs dutiful. He gave me a custom kitchen knife for my birthday.â Jeremy pursed his lips and grumbled inwardly, âWorst timing, Master Gail.â However, Hailey was relieved by Gailâs words, and she said seriously, âI know youâre considerate and trying to make me happy, but youâre a professional basketball player and a chef. You know how important your hands are. Why would you do something that would get you hurt?â
Under Haileyâs serious gaze, Jeremy tensed up. He just didnât want to upset her. He was anxious, but he didnât want to contradict her. His face quickly turned red. He just stared at her with watery eyes.
Hailey couldnât stand the look in his eyes. She couldnât help but soften her tone. âOkay, Iâll take the gift.
Donât do this again.â Jeremy grinned and nodded happily. âNo problem!â âCute boyâ¦â Hailey couldnât resist reaching for his head, but she couldnât reach it. Jeremy leaned over and lowered his head like a giraffe. Hailey withdrew her hand and helped him up. âRunning out of time. Iâm cooking.â Jeremy was upset, but he reassured himself that he still had plenty of time and followed Hailey into the kitchen. âLet me help you!â
Hailey belonged in the kitchen. She stood in front of the stove like a cool female general and the spatula looked like a sharp sword in her hand. Gail and Jeremy looked like her sidekicks. They had done the prep, so Hailey cooked quickly. As the dishes were being served, her brothers arrived. Brook was the first to arrive. He picked Kyle up from the airport and sniffed when he came in. âIt smells so good!â Then he turned to Kyle. âKyle, didnât I tell you? Hailey will definitely be cooking today. I guessed right.â Kyle had been arguing with him all the way. He was about to retort when he saw Hailey come out of the kitchen. He immediately gave a smile and opened his arms. âCome on. Let me hug you!â Hailey walked over and hugged him. âKyle, youâre a little late. Iâve been back to Poya for so long.â âI sent Nicholas,â Kyle replied gently. Kyle and Brook looked alike. Their good-looking faces and good bodies were impressive, but their temperaments were completely different. Brook seemed a bit dangerous while Kyle seemed to be gentle. Of course, Kyle was gentle with Hailey. He was just rude to Nicholas.
Kyle added, âI was out of the country last month for some major surgery. I was too busy to visit you.â âI know youâre busy. You Doctors Without Borders are needed everywhere.â Hailey wasnât really angry with Kyle. She knew all too well the duties of a doctor and how busy he was. She glanced behind him.
âWhy are you alone? Whereâs Nick?â Kyle pouted. âHeâs busier than I am. He has a million things to do.â Hailey and Brook felt like Kyle was a wife who had been bullied by her husband. They couldnât stop laughing. âHeâs missing out. Forget it. Look at the gift we have for you.â Kyle handed Hailey a kraft paper bag excitedly and said proudly, âWe racked our brains to come up with it.â He looked like a schoolboy waiting to be praised. Hailey stared at the kraft paper bag and had no idea what it contained.
Photos? Contracts? Postcards? Brook put down his food and walked over curiously. Hailey removed the thread from the bag and poured out the contents. Inside were not photos, contracts, or postcards but⦠an insurance policy. Brook and Hailey were both dumbfounded, Kyle said smugly, âI know you donât lack anything.
Our hospital introduced a health insurance policy and I bought you one. Itâs practical and innovative, isnât it?â His face lit up with pride. Brook and Hailey were both speechless, âWell, not bad.â Hailey put the insurance policy away. She had decided on one of her birthday wishes for this year. âDad, Mom, I wish this insurance Kyle bought would never kick in.â
