Chapter 109
Mr. Sallow's Sinful Wife by Maisie Chasey
Chapter 109 Something Different About Nancy âNicholas....â Madelline grabbed Nicholasâ hand with a pitiful expression. âAre you leaving already?â
âSince youâre fine, itâs improper for me to stay. Itâs even more improper for me to stay overnight. I told you. Iâm married, and youâre not. It wonât be good for either one of us if I stay here. Alice can accompany you.â
âCall me if you need something.â
As soon as Madelline heard that, she burst into tears. âYou believe those photos, donât you, Nicholas?â
âYou think Iâm a slât who goes around seducing men, donât you?â
âSob... Itâs not true. Those photos are all fake, Nicholas. No matter where I am, youâre the only one I love.â
Madelline cried her heart out, but Nicholas only felt irritated..
He couldnât wait to leave. He was worried about Nancy.
He shoved Madellineâs hand away and said curtly. âIt doesnât matter if theyâre real or fake. Iâll help you suppress the news.â
âWhat did you say? Itâs not important?â Madelline stared at Nicholas in disbelief.
Why wouldnât a womanâs reputation be important to a man?
Donât all men want a woman with a clean reputation?
He said itâs not important.
Does this mean he really doesnât want me anymore?
âYou donât want me anymore, right, Nicholas?â Madelline looked up at him as tears streamed down her cheeks.
âI have a wife,â Nicholas declared solemnly.
âA wife?â Madelline scoffed. âHow is she your wife? Sheâs just a pawn. Why are you willing to be with her instead of me? How am I not as good as her, Nicholas?â
âYouâre great, but sheâs my wife. I have to be responsible toward her.â
Nicholas abruptly remembered what Jacob had said to him.
âSheâs just a young woman. Sheâll be a divorcee without a job. Her mother died years ago, and she doesnât have a single relative. Can you imagine what her life would be like if I divorced her? How 1/4 can she bear what others would say about her?â
It was true. Nicholas couldnât imagine what it would be like.
âItâs getting late. You should get some rest.â
Nicholas left the hospital without hesitation.
As soon as he got into the car, he called the people back at the house and asked about Nancy.
They said she was fine. Everything was normal.
Nicholas was relieved.
However, when he got back and saw Nancy, he realized how abnormal the so-called normal was.
When he arrived, Nancy was having her dinner.
The dining table was filled with her favorite food.
Nicholas was hungry. After washing his hands, he sat at the table to have his dinner. Nancy sat on the left, and he sat on the right.
It was a large dining table, and the rift between them only made the table seem even bigger.
From the moment Nicholas stepped foot into the house till he took his seat at the table, Nancy didnât even look at him.
She kept her head lowered. Her gaze was cool as she quietly ate from her plate.
She barely touched the other food on the table.
Even though there was a feast of mains and sides on the table, Nancy only took a few bites from the serving plates in front of her. She didnât touch any of the other food. She didnât even stretch her arm beyond her seat.
When she noticed that Nicholas had sat at the dining table, she started eating more quickly.
After seeing that she mainly ate the vegetables, Nicholas picked up a prawn and placed it on her plate. âYou should eat more.
Youâre too skinny.â
âI donât feel like eating prawns today.â
Nancyâs voice was crisp and distant. She continued scarfing down her food.
She didnât even want to look at him.
What was the point of seeing his face? Nothing would change. It would only make her heart ache even more.
2/4 âHave some fish then.â
Nicholas passed a fish filet to Nancy.
âThank you,â she said impassively.
Nicholas continued to pile more food onto Nancyâs plate.
Nancy accepted it all without objection.
âIâm done. Take your time.â
Nancy set her cutlery down and went upstairs.
It was only then that Nicholas realized all the food he served her was piled neatly on the side of the plate. She didnât take a single bite out of them.
âHow much did she eat?â Nicholas summoned Peggy and asked.
Peggy sighed and reported, âJust half a bowl of salad. She barely touched the other sides too. She usually likes the clam chowder I make, but she didnât drink any of it today.â
âI see. You can get back to work now.â
Nicholas filled a bowl with clam chowder and brought it upstairs.
When he arrived on the second floor, Nancy was gathering her pajamas and getting ready to take a shower.
She jumped in fright when he first entered, but she soon composed herself again.
âDid you want something?â Nancy asked coolly.
âPeggy said you didnât eat much for dinner. You like her clam chowder, right? I brought some up. Have it while itâs still warm.â
Nicholas was just as gentlemanly as ever, but his pleasantness felt like a mockery to Nancy.
âNo need. I ate enough.â
âIf you donât feel like having clam chowder, Iâll tell them to make some other soup do you feel like having?â
Upon hearing that, Nancy strode over.
for you. What She took the clam chowder from him. The temperature was just right, so she drank straight from the bowl.
Soon, she finished everything.
3/4 Then, she eyed Nicholas coolly âSatished?â
Nicholas didnât speak.
As he stared at her, an indescribable feeling emerged within him.
After what happened today, he sensed that Nancy had changed. She became more polite and distant with him..
In fact, it seemed like she didnât need him as much anymore.
This feeling flustered him.
âI wasnât trying to force you, Nicholas explained as he held the empty bowl.
However, as soon as he finished speaking. Nancy covered her mouth and rushed to the bathroom.
She threw up the contents in her stomach, but to avoid letting Nicholas notice anything, she locked the bathroom door and turned on all the taps to hide the sound of her retching.
Even though she felt incredibly sick, she didnât want to use this to gain his pity or concern.
That would only make her seem more pitiful to herself.
Pathetic, even.
Once she stopped vomiting, she washed her face.
As she stared at her reflection, the hollowness in her eyes and iciness in her expression gave her the urge to cry, She covered her mouth, but she couldnât hold back anymore. She began to sob.
Still, she dared not make any sound. She merely cried in silence.
I was wrong. I was so wrong.
I shouldnât have expected anything from Nicholas. I shouldnât have been hopeful about this marriage.
Iâm sorry, Grandpa. I really wanted to fulfill your dying wish and get along with him, but I canât hold on any longer.
Itâs too tiring. Iâm exhausted.
