Chapter 133
Mr. Sallow's Sinful Wife by Maisie Chasey
Chapter 133 Too Late, Itâs Meaningless Now Nancy had intended to talk about marriage.
Unfortunately, her marriage had come to an end.
Suppressing the painful ache in her heart, she responded with a carefree smile, âNothing.â
She knew she wouldnât have the marriage and love she desired.
That was why she felt so drawn to and envious of Jacob and his wifeâs love story.
It was natural for a person to envy others for having what they themselves could not have. Nancy was no exception.
Suddenly, Nicholas spoke up, âYouâll find it.â
âFind what?â
âYou said you want a love of your own and someone who loves you with all their heart, right? Just like Grandma, youâll find someone who loves you, cherishes you, and would give their life to protect you.â
âIs that so?â Nancy chuckled.
âPerhaps you already have,â Nicholas said.
In that moment, he wanted to grab her hand and tell her, âI know I made a mistake, Nancy. I was a fool. I didnât realize what my heart wanted back then, but I do now. Iâll love you the way Grandpa loved Grandma. Can you give me another chance?â
Unfortunately, after hearing Nancyâs words, his hand froze in mid-air.
âThatâs right. I found it-a long time ago. But unfortunately, I didnât hold onto it. Maybe thatâs just my fate!â Nancy shook her head helplessly.
Nicholas felt as if his heart had sunk into the depths of an icy lake.
His outstretched hand trembled as it clenched into a fist. Slowly, he retracted it.
It was as if he had never reached out in the first place.
Nicholas briefly closed his eyes. His heart was in agony. When he opened his eyes again, the pain only intensified.
Words couldnât describe how happy he had felt when she affirmed that she had already found such a love. He even felt a renewed sense of hope and was determined not to let go, no matter how much she resented him. He wouldnât leave.
Then, the words âa long time agoâ sent him plummeting back into the depths of despair.
A long time ago?
She had once said she had loved someone for a decade.
Itâs not me. Itâs the man she loved and kept hidden in her heart for ten years.
It wasnât him.
It wasnât him at all.
This thought nearly drove Nicholas mad with jealousy.
He hated himself for not cherishing what he had. He loathed the fact that he didnât even know who the other man was.
âYou must be hungry by now. What would you like to eat for lunch?â Nicholas changed the subject.
âIâm fine with anything. Since this is Grandpaâs hometown, Iâm sure youâre more familiar with this. place than I am. Iâll eat whatever you decide.â
âAlright. Wait here.â
After setting down their bags, Nicholas and Nancy ventured out..
A long and winding path stretched before them, lined with stone slabs that glistened as if polished by the rain.
On both sides of the path stood houses with the distinct characteristics of small-town architecture. Some walls were adorned with creeping greenery and tiny, colorful flowers, creating a picturesque sight even from a distance.
If they approached the houses, they would be greeted by the fragrant scent of the flowers.
When they took a left at the end of the path, they arrived at the bustling town market, the liveliest part of the town.
Nicholas brought Nancy to try one of the townâs most unique specialties, a delicacy he always enjoyed whenever he visited.
Initially, he worried that Nancy might not be accustomed to the taste.
His worries dissipated when he saw her finish the entire bowl. A smile formed on his face.
After lunch, Nicholas took Nancy on a stroll around town.
It wasnât a large town, but the views were delightful. There were various little shops filled to the brim with interesting items.
Nancy enjoyed browsing through some of the shops that sold quaint jewelry and accessories. She purchased the ones she liked.
After a few stops, her wrist was adorned with a variety of bracelets.
âDo you like these?â Nicholas asked.
Nancy raised her hand and shook the bracelets. She laughed as they made a clanging sound. âI do. Theyâre pretty, donât you think? Plus, I didnât have to spend much money to get so many of them. Theyâre such good value for money, donât you think?â
âThatâs true.â
Although he nodded in agreement, Nicholas felt a tinge of bitterness in his heart.
They had been married for two years. Even though they werenât a loving couple, he didnât forget to do his part for special occasions.
Whether it was their wedding anniversary, her birthday, or other festive occasions, he would instruct Lynn to buy some jewelry for Nancy.
Just one of those pieces alone would cost more than a bag full of these bracelets, but she never seemed as happy when she received them. Her expression was always indifferent.
âI have bought jewelry for you before,â Nicholas suddenly stated, his jealousy evident.
âYou have.â Nancy nodded. Then, her voice softened as she continued, âYou did get me a lot of jewelry.â
However, Lynn was the one who picked them out and gave them to me without any involvement from you.
Nicholas had never even asked Nancy about her preferences.
As a result, very few of the pieces she received were in designs she liked.
âI donât recall you ever wearing them.â
Nancy looked up, staring at him with her clear eyes, and said solemnly, âNicholas, since weâve been. married for a few years now, Iâll give you a piece of advice.â
âWhat advice?â
âIn the future, if you meet a woman you like and want to give her jewelry, at least find out what she likes first. Donât just choose blindly. Otherwise, even if you give her a thousand gifts, you wouldnât have given her something she truly likes.â
âAlso, I donât think any woman wants to receive gifts bought and chosen for her by her husbandâs assistant. Iâm no exception.â
With that, Nancy quickened her pace and continued walking ahead.
Meanwhile, Nicholas stood rooted to the spot, lost in thought.
She was talking about him.
It was true that he had given her gifts for every occasion, but he had instructed Lynn to prepare them..
He had never asked her about her preferences.
He was a complete fool.
Despite being married for two years, he had no idea what she liked. He realized what a failure he had been.
Seeing that Nancy had already walked quite far ahead, Nicholas wasted no time. He jogged to catch up with her.
âCan you tell me what you like?â he asked.
âYou no longer need to know my preferences now.â
âWhat if I feel the need to know?â Nicholas gazed at Nancy intently. His eyes shimmered like the twinkling stars. If Nancy had been even slightly less determined, she would have been captivated by their allure.
Swiftly diverting her gaze, she responded, âIf someone genuinely cares, they will discover the truth on their own. It loses its significance if the answer is simply handed to them.â
