Chapter 145
Mr. Sallow's Sinful Wife by Maisie Chasey
Chapter 145 What If I Tell You That Itâs You Nicholas came to a sudden stop, freezing in his tracks. He clenched his fists, desperately trying to hold back his sadness and despair.
Nancy caught up to him and was about to speak, but Nicholas abruptly turned around and looked at her sharply. He emphasized each word, âI. Donât. Want. To. Know.â He had no desire to know at all. Why did I stay just to hear her love story with another man? Am I stupid?
Nancyâs face turned pale as a sheet. Summoning her courage, she wanted to tell him that the man she was talking about was Nicholas himself. However, all she received was rejection. She bit her lip and forced herself to speak again. âYou really donât want to know? What if I tell you that itâs...â you.
Before she could finish her sentence, Nicholas extended his hand and covered her lips. His next words were ice-cold and heartless. âI told you, I donât want to hear it.â Almost furious, he roared, âI donât want to know who youâre in love with. I donât want to! Donât tell me!â
A bitter and forlorn smile appeared on Nancyâs lips. Yes. He doesnât want to hear about it. He doesnât even want to know. Why should I rush to tell him? Nancy, he doesnât care about you. Why are you doing this?
This time, she had gathered all her courage to tell him. After this, she wouldnât have the strength to speak up anymore. Being humiliated once was enough. She wouldnât allow herself to be humiliated any further. âFine, I wonât say anything,â Nancy said..
Nicholasâ eyes darkened, and he let go of her. The last glimmer of light vanished from Nancyâs eyes. They were now empty.
âIâll take you home,â Nicholas said.
Nancy smiled bitterly. Home? The moment we got divorced, I lost my home.
They got into the car, but the atmosphere was exceptionally quiet throughout the journey. Only the sound of music filled the air.
No one spoke.
Nicholas only broke the silence when they arrived at the house. âWeâre here.â
âI see.â She got out of the car. While Nicholas parked, Nancy went inside. Without waiting, she went straight to the second floor and began packing her belongings. She didnât have many possessions-just some documents, clothes, and makeup. She sorted through them, so it didnât take long for her to finish packing.
When Nicholas entered the room, she was halfway done. He paused for a moment, feeling a bitter pang inside. It was then that he realized he had overlooked something important. They were divorced. Naturally, they couldnât continue living together.
She was leaving this place. She wouldnât be here anymore.
The thought made him feel suffocated, as if a rope was tightening around his neck. He couldnât hold back any longer. He reached out and grabbed her arm. âStop.â
Nancy turned around, looking at him with confusion.
âYou donât have any family here besides Hugo. You havenât found a place or a job. Stay here. You can move out once youâve sorted everything out. You must be accustomed to this place. Stay. Iâll move to another room. I wonât disturb you.â
Nancy explained, âThanks, but donât worry about me. Iâve found a job. Once Evelyn comes back, I can start working. Linda has a place near the hospital. I can move in with her.â
Nicholas didnât expect her to have everything planned already. He paused for a moment before asking, âYouâre going to stay at Lindaâs place? Wonât that be inconvenient?â
âI would be worried if it were someone else, but Linda and I have been friends for over twenty years. We grew up together. She wonât mind.â
Nicholas cleared his throat. âThatâs not what I meant. I mean, sheâs dating Luke. If you move in with her, it might complicate their relationship.â He was trying to persuade Nancy to stay.
Nancy nodded. âYouâre right. Itâs just a temporary arrangement. While sheâs filming her show, Iâll stay there for a while and move out once I find a new place.â
Nicholas decided to get straight to the point. âYou can still stay here. I donât mind.â.
Nancy shook her head. âItâs alright. Weâre divorced. Living together wouldnât be good for either of us. Besides, youâre a special person. I donât want to be the center of attention, and...â
Nancy paused for a moment before continuing, âWeâre both single. If you find a girlfriend someday or if I find a partner, itâll be difficult for both of us. Since weâre divorced, we might as well make a clean. break.â
Only then can I let go of my love. Only then can I bid my final farewell.
âA partner?â She said sheâs single. She said sheâll find a partner someday. The thought frustrated Nicholas, and his heart grew heavy once again. Why didnât I consider that? Once sheâs single, with her brilliance, sheâll have countless suitors. The idea of her having a boyfriend and belonging to someone else in the future filled Nicholas with jealousy.
Unable to contain himself any longer, he asked, âI thought youâve been in love with that crush of yours for ten years. Will you find another boyfriend? Or will you go back to him?â
Nancy shook her head calmly. âI wonât go back to him.â
âWhy? I thought youâve been thinking about him all this time. Itâs been ten years. Can you really let go?â
âHe forgot about me a long time ago. Thereâs no need for me to seek him out. So what if Iâve loved him for ten years? When his lover returned for one day, he cared more about her. I should forget about this. Time is a magical thing. It washes everything away. Someday, Iâll forget about him too,â Nancy said firmly.
That answer brought a renewed sense of hope to Nicholas, and his heart started racing. She said sheâll forget about him. Does that mean I have a chance?
Nancy closed her suitcase. âIâm finished packing. I have to go now. Take care of yourself.â She pulled her luggage away.
Nicholas held her hand. âItâs late. How are you going to her place alone?â
âI can take a taxi.â
âAt this hour? I canât let you go alone. Iâll be worried. Stay overnight. Iâll give you a ride tomorrow.â
