Chapter 157
Mr. Sallow's Sinful Wife by Maisie Chasey
Chapter 157 Nancy In Danger (1)
âThey gave them to you, so theyâre yours,â Nicholas insisted as he tried to hand over the jewelry box to Nancy.
She stood her ground and refused to accept the jewelry. âThese things donât belong to me, so I wonât take them,â she asserted.
Given their divorced status, she felt she had no right to keep these items. She also remarked, âIf your visit was solely for this purpose, then perhaps itâs best that you leave.â
Nicholas clenched his fists in disbelief and uttered with fiery intensity, âAre you telling me to leave?â
In response, Nancy sighed and suddenly burst into laughter, a bitter smile on her face. âI must be a glutton for punishment.â.
âYouâre right. I shouldnât have forced you since these things werenât yours. Many women would gladly accept gifts from me, and there are plenty who want to be part of the Sallow Family. Why should I insist on you?â He concluded, âVery well. Iâll give these to them.â
The first person to cross Nancyâs mind was Madelline, and her face instantly drained of color. She had to hold onto a nearby couch to prevent herself from collapsing. After a moment, she regained her composure and addressed Nicholas, âYouâre right, Mr. Sallow. You have many admirers and women eager to be with you. Iâm a nobody; thereâs no reason to mention me. Besides, you still have your lover in your heart. You actually wanted to divorce me back then, didnât you? The only reason you dragged it out was your struggle to get over the hurdles in your heart for fear that you would disappoint Grandpaâs. wishes. Well, isnât this great news that you can go and propose to Madelline? You finally can be together.â
He tightened his fists, and his eyes burned with anger. He ground his teeth and asked, âWhat are you trying to say?â
Nancy responded, âIsnât this what you wanted?â
Given that they were divorced, both were free to chart their courses in life. She understood that she had no right to interfere in his choices.
âHeh...â Nicholas sneered, his expression turning cold. âAll right then. Very well, Nancy, since this is what you want, Iâll grant your wish Nancy began to protest, âWhen did I say this is what I-â
However, her words were abruptly cut short. The door slammed shut as Nicholas swiftly exited, disappearing from her sight like a fleeting gust of wind. He left, and his departure was even more decisive than she had anticipated.
1/3 Hugging herself tightly, Nancy suddenly felt a cool breeze in the air, and her heart was filled with bitterness. She walked aimlessly, not knowing where she wanted to go; she simply wandered without a clear purpose.
She strolled along a lively street, where vibrant lights and pulsating music enveloped her senses. At this moment, she felt an unexpected release of pent-up tension, a lightening of her entire being. It was as if a magnetic force drew her forward, guiding her to enter the inviting bar.
Inside the bar, the noise and music were deafening, and the place was crowded. This was. unusual for her, as she typically found such noisy environments unbearable. She wouldnât have entered on a regular day, but today was different. She needed this place to unwind, allowing the music to occupy her thoughts completely, pushing aside any other concerns.
Upon finding a seat, a waiter approached Nancy and inquired about her drink preference. Cautious about her safety, she refrained from ordering alcohol and instead opted for a non-alcoholic beverage.
The âdrinkâ she received was not only delicious but also artistically presented, accentuated by the subtle lighting in the bar. She sipped it and finished her first drink rather quickly. Without much thought, she ordered another. However, as she reached her third drink, she began to feel that something was amiss. Her head grew heavy, and dizziness washed over her. She couldnât help but wonder, Whatâs going on? I havenât had any alcohol; Iâve only been drinking a bit of this beverage. Why am I feeling so intoxicated?
Nancy held the cup, her steps swaying as she made her way to the bar and placed it on the counter. With a slight frown, she inquired, âBoss, did you serve the wrong drink? I ordered. a non-alcoholic one, but Iâm feeling dizzy after drinking it. Can you please change it for me?â
The boss quickly grasped the situation, noticing that Nancy had yet to finish her drink. This particular beverage bore a name that resembled a soft drink, and its taste was deceptively similar, but it packed a potent punch. Observing her seemingly well-
behaved demeanor, the boss surmised that she was likely a first-time visitor, unfamiliar with the establishment, and had accidentally chosen the wrong drink.
After receiving the explanation, Nancy nodded in apparent understanding. She retrieved her cup and returned to her seat, where her dizziness seemed to intensify. Waves of lightheadedness washed over her in quick succession.
She rested her head on the table, hoping to wait until her dizziness subsided, allowing her to stand up. She reached for her phone, considering talking to someone. However, she ruled out her friend Linda, who was busy filming, and didnât want to burden her further. Additionally, Linda was in a different city, so a conversation wouldnât be of much help. either.
2/3 She also had two close friends from her school days. One was currently studying abroad, and the other was deep into a demanding internship, working long hours every day. She felt hesitant about disturbing them in their busy lives.
Soon, Nancyâs finger paused on the name âNicholas.â Given how decisively he had left during the day, she surmised he might be on a plane heading to see Madelline.
Finally, her gaze settled on the name âChristian.â Since their last parting, a substantial amount of time had passed. She wondered about the progress of his mission and his safety. Thinking about this, she felt a strong urge to reach out to him immediately. Her intoxicated state hindered her from typing a text message, so she decided to send him a voice message instead. âChristian. Hey, do you still remember me? Iâm Nancy. Itâs been a while since we last spoke. How have you been? Did you return safely? I still owe you a cup of coffee! Please let me know once you return safely!â
On the other side, Christian had just disembarked from his flight and was now in a car driven by Dylan, who had come to pick him up. His phone unexpectedly chimed with a new message, and he initially assumed it was from his sister or mother. To his astonishment, it was a message from Nancy.
Undeniably, Christian was excited, but he made an effort to temper his emotions. What took him by surprise was that the message from Nancy was a voice message. Without hesitation, he played it. Although it started with customary greetings, Christian swiftly noticed something different-the tone of her voice indicated she might have been drinking.
Sitting in the front passenger seat, Dylan couldnât help but express his excitement. âBoss, isnât that your wifeâs voice?â
Christian scolded him. âStop talking nonsense.
âBoss, donât be so humble. In my opinion, itâs time for you to settle down. Only when youâre married can we have a chance!â
Ignoring Dylanâs comments, Christian quickly replied, âWhere are you?â
As Nancy stared at the few words on her screen, her eyes widened. She had never expected him to respond. During their time apart, she had asked about the progress of his mission and whether there were any dangers, but there had been no response.
She had even started to think that he had forgotten about her. Yet, today, he had actually replied.
