Chapter 220
Mr. Sallow's Sinful Wife by Maisie Chasey
Chapter 220 Personally Witnessing Her Happiness As they reached the second floor, Christian realized that he was still holding her hand. Nancy lowered her gaze and gently reminded him, âChristian?â
He immediately let go and apologized, saying, âIâm sorry.â
Even though he had released her hand, the warmth from their brief contact lingered in his palm, comforting and gentle. Nancyâs hand was petite and soft, even more delicate than he had imagined.
âMy mom probably had a long conversation with you downstairs, and she might have misunderstood something. Please donât take it to heart,â he explained.
âHmm? What misunderstanding?â Nancy was puzzled, wondering what could have been misunderstood. She had only come to visit him and couldnât think of any reason for misunderstandings.
Christian cleared his throat and somewhat embarrassedly said, âMaybe... she misunderstood that thereâs something between us, even mistook you for my girlfriend.â
Nancyâs eyes widened in surprise, âReally?â
âAbsolutely,â he confirmed.
âShould I clarify it with your mother? It might be awkward when your real girlfriend visits.â
âNo need,â he said. âI donât have a girlfriend just yet.â
She considered for a moment and then blinked her long eyelashes at him, saying, âWith your qualities, you must have plenty of girls pursuing you. When the time comes, donât forget to invite me for coffee.â
âAlright.â He nodded.
The way he looked at Nancy was complicated. At that moment, he was unsure whether he should be happy or sad. Should he be happy because he had concealed his feelings well and she had never detected a hint of his affection, or should he be sad that she never noticed a clue?
âNancy?â He called her name, his heart heavy.
âYeah?â
âHow are you and him now? Last time was so rushed that I forgot to ask about both of you. He seemed to have suffered a severe injury. How is his recovery?â
âHeâs recovering well, she replied, smiling gently at him. âAnd weâve made up âReally?â
âYes, weâve reconciled. Weâve resolved all our misunderstandings, and weâve confessed our feelings to each other. This time, he deliberately came back from abroad to save me from my kidnapping. He spent a lot of money to save me, and he even took a bullet for me. So, Iâm very sure now that he loves. me,â Nancy said. âChristian, Iâm very happy and content right now Iâve also shared my secret with him, 1/4 told him that heâs the one Iâve loved for ten years. Heâs thrilled about it, like a child dancing with joy.â
Her smile remained on her lips, a gentle and soothing expression that radiated a unique sense of peace.
Christian knew that this smile was one of genuine happiness and contentment. It was the joy that could only come from deep within a person.
âThatâs great.â He nodded, his emotions becoming even more complex.
When he left, he would often think about her and feel regret. He wondered if there would have been a chance if he had stayed by her side. But now, all he felt was relief. As long as she was happy, it was the best outcome.
Her happiness was contagious to him.
âWhy are we talking so much about me? I originally came to see you. Howâs your recovery from the injury? Does it still hurt?â
âYou seem to have forgotten my profession. This wound isnât a big deal for me; Iâve recovered well.â
âWell, thatâs good.â Nancy continued, âSeeing you like this, I feel much more relieved. By the way, why were you there that day?â
âThe person who kidnapped you, Puck Wolfe, was an important lead we had been tracking for a long time. He was connected to a major case, but because of its extensive implications, it wasnât easy to make a breakthrough. We considered him as one of the potential entry points. Later, we received information that he had kidnapped someone for extortion on the mountaintop. We all rushed there,. but it turned out to be a wrong move. It not only failed to help you but put you in danger. Almost got you hurt.â
âChristian, itâs not your fault, and why would I blame you? Nothing can ensure a foolproof operation. It was an accident.â She comforted.
âIâm relieved that youâre safe. Otherwise, Iâd blame myself.â
âWell, you can relax now. Iâm fine. See?â She moved her limbs. âIâm like an active little bunny, feeling great.â
The two continued to chat for a while, and then Nancy received a call from Nicholas.
âHey, Nick.â
âHave you finished your visit?â
âYeah, Iâm almost done,â she replied.
âAlright, come out. Iâm waiting for you at the hospital entrance.â
âYouâre at the hospital?â Nancy was quite surprised and added, âBut Christian had been discharged, and Iâm at his house now.â
âOkay, wait for me; Iâll be there soon,â Nicholas said before hanging up. He then urged Lynn, âDrive. Get there right away.â
2/4 In reality, he was on his way home, but halfway through, he couldnât shake the feeling that his wife was visiting a man who had been longing for her. He decided it was too risky, so he asked Lynn to return to the hospital. He didnât even go home, stayed there waiting, and would only be at ease when he saw his wife.
Truth be told, he wouldnât be this concerned if it was anyone else. However, this was the Christian they were talking about. He genuinely admired the excellence and determination of the men in the Zayns, and that made him even more cautious.
Nancy hung up the phone and looked at Christian. âIâm glad youâre recovering well. Iâll head home now. Oh, your mom asked me to stay for lunch, and Iâm afraid she might already be preparing the meal.â
âNo worries. Iâll talk to her.â
âAlright, thank you, Christian.â
With that, the two headed downstairs together. As soon as they arrived, Bella exclaimed, âNancy, come and sit here with me. Iâve already had the kitchen prepare-
Before she could finish her sentence, Christian interrupted, âMom, Nancy has something to attend to, so she wonât be able to have lunch with us. Iâll join you for the meal.â
âOh, but just now...â Bellaâs smile faded, and she seemed a bit disappointed. He spoke to her for a moment, calming her down, and she managed to regain her cheerful demeanor. âAlright, next time, Nancy, Iâll invite you for a meal another time.â
âSure, Mrs. Zayn. Iâll join you for a meal next time.â
âGreat.â
When Christian walked Nancy out, Bella still sighed reluctantly.
Luciana had long seen through her motherâs feelings, and as she peeled a grape without missing a beat, she asked, âMom, do you like that girl?â
âI do,â Bella replied. Suddenly, her gaze shifted as a thought crossed her mind. âLucy, I donât know if itâs just me getting older or what, but I was instantly drawn to that girl when I first saw her. She exuded elegance and composure, radiating a sense of dignity. However, the more I ponder on it, the more I feel like she resembles someone, like a remarkable resemblance. I canât tell if my eyes are deceiving me or if my memory is failing me.â
âMom, I donât think youâve ever met her,â Luciana said.
âWell, this is the first time Iâve laid eyes on her, so perhaps Iâm remembering incorrectly. Lucy, could you go outside and bid her farewell?â
âCynthia, please take care of Mom. Iâll go outside.â
âOf course, go ahead, sis. Iâll stay with Mom.â
Luciana, wearing high heeis, stepped outside and immediately noticed a familiar luxury car. It was identical to her own, except for the license plate. There were only two cars like that in the entire city, so 3/4 she recognized it instantly.
