Chapter Seven
Better Than Revenge [Unedited - 2012 Version]
Note: Better Than Revenge was written before Kidnap My Heart. Kidnap My Heart wasn't supposed to be a real book but I decided to make it one after writing Better Than Revenge. The Kidnap My Heart scenes in this book are NOT the same as the ones in the real version of Kidnap My Heart. Nicknames are different, dialogue is different, even some of the plot is different. This is an extremely rough draft of what would later become Kidnap My Heart as you know it. So if you've read Kidnap My Heart, just keep this in mind!
Better Than Revenge
Chapter Seven
âSoph, calm the hell down!â Tori snapped, shaking me violently. âYouâre not going in there freaking out like this! Calm down!â
âI canât!â I wailed, wiggling out of her grip. âIâm so nervous!â
âYou canât let them see youâre nervous, though!â she reasoned with me. âJust take a deep breath and breathe⦠in and out, Soph, in and out.â
âThat sounds so wrong, Tori,â I said between my deep breaths. âSo, so wrongâ¦â
She rolled her eyes at me. âShut up and breathe! In⦠outâ¦â
I followed her advice and steadied my breathing, which in turn calmed me down considerably.
âBetter?â she asked me.
âMuch,â I replied, nodding my head.
âGood.â She looked very proud of herself. âNow, are you ready to go knock their socks off?â
âI was born ready,â I told her with a grin.
âThatâs what I like to hear!â She grinned widely. âNow go! Donât forget to be your charming self!â
âWho else would I be?â I asked her, shaking my head as I exited her car.
âI donât know,â she replied in exasperation. âJust go!â
I chuckled and shut the car door, turning away from her. I looked up at the huge building and took a deep breath.
Here goes nothing, I thought, walking towards the building. I stopped at the entrance, nervously biting my lip. I was momentarily lost in my own little world, a little world that was domineered by âwhat ifâsâ and fears. Tori honked her horn at me all of a sudden, snapping me out of my thoughts.
I was thankful for this. That little world wasnât a place I wanted to be at that moment. I turned around to give Tori the thumbs up sign. She stuck her own thumb out the window and I laughed, turning back around. Clutching the door handle in my hand, I faced my fears and opened the door. Walking inside, I glanced around.
I followed my instincts as I made my way around the building, somehow managing to find the audition room. It was marked with a sign for the clueless folk like me.
âWhew,â I muttered to myself, glad I hadn't gotten lost. I opened the door to the audition room and ran right smack into something hard. âOof. Shit.â
A cup of something, coffee, it seemed, fell to the floor and splashed all over my legs.
âWatch where youâre going!â a voice snapped angrily.
I looked up in annoyance and realized the thing I had run into wasnât a thing; it was a person. And of course, with my luck, it was the one person I couldnât stand.
âWhy donât you?â I snapped right back.
âYouâre the one who ran into me,â Christian Ryder said, looking down at his spilled coffee scornfully.
âExcuse me?â I asked, scoffing. âIt takes two to tango, Hot-Shot.â
âWhat the hell does that even mean?â
âIt means it takes two people to cause something like this,â I clarified, rolling my eyes at his stupidity.
âNo, if you had been watching where you were going, this wouldnât have happened,â he insisted stubbornly.
âAnd if you had been watching where you were going, this wouldnât have happened!â I threw right back.
âI donât have to. Thatâs your issue, not mine!
âThatâs the biggest load of bullshit Iâve ever heard,â I screeched, shaking my head.
âIt is not,â Christian replied, glaring at me. âAnd thanks to you, I spilled my coffee.â
âThanks to me?â I repeated, shaking my head in disbelief. âFor the last time⦠this wasnât my fault!â
âOf course it was.â
I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down. I didnât want to get fined for hitting the guy, after all. âOkay, how about I reenact this for you? Just stand there.â
He looked confused but didnât say anything.
âNow do whatever you were doing when I ran into you,â I commanded, nodding towards him.
âI was texting,â he said slowly, waving his phone at me.
I smirked. âExactly my point!â
âWhat?â
âJust start texting like you were before,â I said, rolling my eyes.
Christian gave me an odd look but followed my command anyway.
âNow, I was walking straight and I looked down for a second and boom.â I ran into him, just like I had a minute before. âWe collided. Now, âMr. Salutatorianâ, why did we collide?â
âBecause you werenât paying attention to where you were going.â
I let out a loud exhale. âNo. We collided because I looked away for a second and you were on your phone. So you know what that means?â
âWhat?â he asked irritably.
âIt means we were both at fault,â I explained. âIt was mostly you, of course, but I was still partly at fault.â
âHow was it mostly me?â he demanded.
âYou were the one texting! I was just looking down.â
âIâm perfectly capable of texting and walking at the same time,â he told me bitterly.
âWell, considering you ran into me, I beg to differ.â
Christian sighed, running a hand through his fair. âGod damn, youâre annoying⦠what are you even doing here?â
âWhat are you doing here?â I shot back.
âCan you just answer a question the first time without being so difficult?â
âCan you just quit asking me intrusive questions?â
He looked at me in annoyance. âHow are my questions intrusive?â
âBecause itâs none of your business,â I snapped.
âYou are so infuriating,â he growled, looking like he wanted to reach over and wring my neck.
I was sure my expression was something similar to his.
It wasnât until this moment that I realized we had drawn quite the crowd. I supposed we were being a bit loudâ¦
I nearly cursed out loud when I realized we had also caught the attention of the director herself, Nora Harding. Great. Now I had no chance of getting this role. I was fighting with a well-known actor that she had worked with before.
âIâm infuriating?â I repeated disbelievingly, ignoring the knot in my stomach the thought of Nora Harding standing right there produced. âYouâre infuriating!â
âHow am I infuriating?â
âBecause youâre so goddamn nosy!â I accused, shaking my head. âYouâre always asking stupid questions! And then you wonder why I purposely give you stupid answers.â
âThe questions arenât stupid,â Christian said in his defense. âTheyâre normal questions.â
âHmm, letâs see,â I said, faking wonder. ââWhat are you doing here?â Well, genius, Iâm holding a folder filled with my information, my headshot and other files, so what do you think?â
Realization dawned on him. âYouâre auditioning?â
I rolled my eyes. âDing, ding, ding! We have a winner!â
âQuit treating me like Iâm stupid,â he hissed.
âI will as soon as you quit giving me a reason to,â I retorted.
He was about to say something when Nora Harding herself appeared, standing by us. âIs there a problem here?â she asked, looking back and forth between us.
âYes,â he replied just as I said, âNo.â
âWell? Which is it?â
âYes, there is,â Christian said, looking at me with disdain. âSheâs being problematic.â
I rolled my eyes. âYou just still canât handle the fact that I refuse to worship the ground you walk on!â
âI donât ask you to!â
âThatâs because you know I wouldnât do it, anyway!â
âThatâs not true,â he exclaimed, shaking his head.
âOf course it is. Itâs common knowledge that you would have to hold a gun to my head to make me do that and even then, I might not do it. And you can't accept that!â
âWhy are you so stubborn?â he asked, breathing outwardly.
âWhy are you so stubborn?â
âDo you see what Iâm saying?â Christian asked Nora, pointing to me. âDo you see what Iâm dealing with?â
âYou just canât handle the heat you give others,â I accused, narrowing my eyes.
âWhat are you talking about?â
âAll I did was ask the same question you asked me,â I said, shrugging. âAnd you blow up on me. You canât take what you give out.â
Nora actually looked more amused than anything else. âChristian, would you do me a favor?â
âYeah, sure,â he replied, going from mega-asshole to mega kiss-ass in one second.
âIt seems this young lady is here to audition for my movie,â she said, a smile playing on her lips. âWould you mind helping out and reading a couple lines with her?â
Christian and I both began to protest at the same time.
âThere must be someone else who couldââ
âThatâs really not necessaryââ
âNo, no, since Christian is already here and you need someone to read the lines with you, it works out.â
âIâm not even auditioning for this movie, Nora,â Christian protested weakly. âIâm just here to support a buddy.â
âWell, can you do this as a favor to me, then?â
He sighed, giving in very easily. âYeah.â
She smiled at him and turned to me. âCome with me and weâll get you all sorted out.â
I followed her, appearing confident on the outside although I was extremely confused on the inside. The director didnât usually pay this much attention to any of the people auditioningâ¦
She took my folder with my information and headshot, reviewing it silently. She quietly discussed a few things with the casting director before turning back to me. She gave me a few instructions on what to do for my audition and before I knew it, the audition was beginning.
Christian and I took center stage, glaring at each other out of the corner of our eyes.
âChristian, read William Knightâs lines. Miss Hastings will read Emma van der Biltâs lines.â
Christian smirked at me and mouthed, âMiss Hastings?â to me.
I glowered at him. âShut it.â
âBegin,â Nora commanded.
âIs it true?â he began, shifting into character very quickly. âIs what Taylor said true?â
I bit my lip and said, âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
He took a step closer to me. âYes, you do.â
âBut I donât,â I replied. âIââ
He closed the distance between us, pressing up against me. âDonât start, Emma.â
The scent of his cologne nearly blinded me and I took a few steps back. âOkay, this is not going to work out,â I said, coughing outrageously.
âWhat now?â
âThe smell of Axe is okay,â I said, fanning the air around my nose. âSpraying the whole can onto yourself isnât.â
A few of the crew members chuckled at my comment.
âI donât use Axe, for your information. I use personalized cologne.â
I rolled my eyes. âWhatever. Like I care. The point is I almost drowned.â
âYou think I liked having to pretend like that with you?â
âObviously not. You were glowering half the time,â I retorted.
âI wasnât,â he exclaimed. âIâm a professional. I donât let annoying brats get to me.â
âIf Iâm an annoying brat, then youâre an insufferable bastard,â I snapped angrily.
He was about to reply when Nora interrupted.
âI think I have a scene in mind that you two might actually be able to do,â she said, sharing a look with the casting director.
I nodded silently, pointedly turning away from Christian. She handed me a new script and I looked down at it. Oh, we could definitely do this one.
Christian was also handed a script and we began once again.
âI canât believe Iâm stuck with you,â Christian said in disgust.
âOh yes, because Iâm so happy to be here with a self-righteous asshole who doesnât know the first thing about anything,â I read, slipping into character very easily. I liked Emma van der Bilt. She was saucy.
âWell, excuse me for not knowing the rules of kidnapping,â he retorted angrily.
âYouâre excused.â I smirked at him.
He rolled his eyes. âOh, very mature.â
âI know I am, thank you.â
âItâs called sarcasm,â he said, rolling his eyes again.
âItâs called throwing back your own sarcasm,â I said calmly.
âWhy couldnât I have gotten the other one? She looks much calmer.â
âBecause God hates you.â
He gave me an incredulous look. âThatâs a terrible thing to say.â
âYou think Iâm worried about being polite to the jackass who kidnapped me a week before my best friendâs eighteenth birthday party?â
âI think youâll live if you donât go to this one party.â
âThe party isnât going to happen at all at this rate, considering the birthday girl is also kidnapped,â I told him, rolling my eyes.
âThatâs not my problem.â
âActually, it is, since you and your idiot of a brother are in charge of us.â
âWould you just shut up?â he asked in annoyance.
âMake me,â I snapped.
âMaybe I will,â he snapped right back. âYou better watch yourself.â
I laughed in amusement. âYou think Iâm scared of you? Please. You guys are amateurs compared to the guys before you.â
âThe guys before us?â he repeated.
âYeah,â I replied, rolling my eyes. âYou think this is the first time Iâve been kidnapped? My dad is a billionaire. This so isnât the first time.â
âYouâll learn to be scared of us when we make good on our threats,â he warned.
âPlease,â I scoffed. âIâd like to see you try.â
He glared at me and stalked forward, pressing his hand to my mouth. I struggled under his grip and bit his hand, hard.
âFâck!â Christian screeched. âCut! You werenât supposed to actually fâcking bite me!â
I smiled innocently. âWhoops. Mustâve slipped my mind.â
âWhat kind of an actress are you?â he yelled, holding his hand to his side.
âThe kind that gets deep into character, of course.â
He scowled at me.
I looked over at Nora and saw that she and the casting director were once again engaged in a deep conversation. I bit my lip, desperately hoping Christianâs presence and the affect his presence had on me hadnât ruined my chances.
If it did⦠boy, was he going to regret it.
