Chapter Nine
Better Than Revenge [Unedited - 2012 Version]
Better Than Revenge
Chapter 9
âSophia?â Suzy asked after a minute of silence. âSophia, dear, are you there?â
âYeah,â I replied, my voice hoarse. I was trying to hold it in. I really was. I didnât want to explode on this poor lady, but it was hard. It was so hard⦠This could not be happening. It couldnât. It just couldnât! This was just my luckâ¦
âHow do you feel about this?â she asked after I didnât say anything else.
âWell, at first, I was happy,â I replied slowly. âUntil I found out who my leading man is."
âYes⦠I thought this might be a bit of a problemâ¦â
âIf you thought it might be a little bit of a problem,â I began, still speaking in a ridiculously calm voice, âthen why did you cast him?â
âWell⦠that would be something best explained by Nora, Iâm afraid,â she tittered nervously.
âI know he doesnât want to work with me either!â I exclaimed. âIâm sure heâs screaming at Nora right now!â
âI think you may have a point there,â Suzy admitted shortly. âNora has a grimace on her face and is shoutingâ¦â
âSee? This is a sign! A sign from God! We canât do this! We canât work together!â
âOh, honey, it wonât be so bad!â she assured me. âYou two will learn to get along, Iâm sure!â
âNo,â I cried out. âWe wonât! Thatâs the thing! You donât get it. No one gets it! I will never be able to get along with him. Ever! Itâs just humanly impossible!â
âButââ
âOh, God, oh, God. This is just my luck. Why is this happening? Why him? There are tons of other actors out there. Why did he get the part? Why, why, why?â
âBut what did he ever do to you?â she asked, sounding very puzzled. âWhat caused this? There has to be a reason for this repulsion you feelâ¦â
âOf course thereâs a reason,â I blurted out. âA good reason, at that! Iâm never going to say what the reason is, of course, but there is one!â
âWell, it canât be that badââ
âNo, it is that bad!â
She sighed in frustration. âOkay, well, Iâm sure working with him canât be too bad, nothing youââ
âNo! It can and it will be that bad!â I exclaimed wildly. âI canât work with him! I donât want to work with him! I told myself that itâs just not worth it once, and right now, I think I was right! I donât think it is right now!â
âWhat do you mean, dear?â she asked in confusion.
âI was watching one of his moviesâwell, I was being forced by the loser I call my best friend to watch one of his moviesâand a very explicit kissing scene came on and I made a face at the screen and thought to myself, or maybe I said it out loud⦠I canât remember⦠but I said that having to do that with him and having to work with him wasnât worth all the fame in the world,â I explained, rambling quite a bit as I spoke. âAnd right now, I think I was right! Iâm not sure if it is!â
âOf course itâs worth it,â she exclaimed, aghast at the idea that it wasnât. âThis is the chance of a lifetime, Sophia. This doesnât happen everyday. Are you really going to let something as petty as your hatred for the actor you have to work with affect your life in this way?â
âWell⦠no.â When she put it that way, I felt stupid for even considering turning this offer down.
âTake the job, honey,â she advised soothingly. âI promise you, you will regret it every day of your life if you donât.â
I let out a loud breath. âGosh darn it, youâre right⦠you do realize this is going to be a disaster, right?â
âOf course,â she replied with a chuckle. âIâm sure youâll grow to like him eventually, though.â
I gagged involuntarily. âYeah, thatâs going to happen.â
âIt might,â she insisted. âYou might even grow to feel more than just that for himâ¦â
âNo,â I said, shaking my head even though she couldnât see me. âNo. Just⦠no.â
âIf you do, you wouldnât be the first one.â She giggled loudly. âIâve worked with him quite a few times. His love interest always falls in love him within the first couple months of filming.â
âTrust me,â I insisted, making a face at the thought. âThatâs not going to happen.â
âI hope for your sake it doesnât. I always pity the poor girls who fall in love with him. He never reciprocates. He dates them for a bit but then grows tired of them. Heâs quite the ladies man, I have to say. I do think you could be an exception, though. Iâve never seen a girl who dislikes Christian Ryder as much as you do.â
âAnd youâll probably never see another,â I muttered, mostly to myself. âWell, except for his first, second and third wives.â
âHeâs been married?â she exclaimed in surprise.
âNo, but Iâm sure that when he does finally get married, heâll go through wives like he goes through socks.â
Suzy laughed joyously. âOh, dear. Weâre all looking forward to working with you, you know. We had a feeling youâd easily brighten up our days and I think we were right.â
âOh. Well thank you,â I said, cheering up a little. I had to look at the bright side of things, which was⦠well, it was everything but Christian Ryder.
I could do this.
Right?
***
Sadly, I had completely forgotten about one thing. One very important thing, mind you. I was basically still hiding from people because of the whole âMystery Girlâ thing. Except that was kind of pointless now, considering my identity had been revealed.
See, when the cast for âKidnap My Heartâ was announced, they (and I wasnât exactly sure who âtheyâ were) felt the need to add the fact that I was Ryderâs Mystery Girl. I was sure many people would have figured it out by themselves, but this way, everyone knew. All anyone wanted to talk about was how Christian Ryder and his Mystery Fan Girl were going to star in a movie together.
The thought made me sick, to be completely honest, but there was no going back now. I had made my decision. Besides, even if I did want to change my mind, I couldnât. My picture was splattered all over magazines, newspapers, and the internet, everywhere!
It was driving me insane.
I seriously couldnât go out anywhere without a disguise now. I tried to go somewhere the day after the cast for âKidnap My Heartâ was announced⦠bad idea. I was bombarded by paparazzi. Since I had never dealt with paparazzi before, I freaked out, of course.
I still had to go to the read-through for the movie in about an hour, though. I didnât really want to go since I knew I would be bombarded by crazy Ry-Hardâs and nosy paparazzi as soon as I stepped foot outside. (They had found out which hotel I stayed at. Stalker much?)
I peeked my head out the window and sure enough, there was a crowd outside the hotel. âGodammit, these people are pissing me offâ¦â I muttered angrily.
âSoph, itâs been two days and youâre already sick of it?â Tori asked incredulously. âSeriously?â
âYes, seriously!â I exclaimed, slamming the curtains back into place. âItâs so annoying! I canât go anywhere without them getting all up in my business!â
âThatâs part of the life, Soph,â Tori pointed out. âYouâve got to get used to it eventually.â
I sighed irritably. âYeah, yeah, I know. I need to get ready for this stupid read-through now.â
She squeaked loudly, saying, âItâs not stupid! Itâs âKidnap My Heartâ! âKidnap My Heart!ââ
I rolled my eyes. âI know that. Now⦠what should I wear?â
I really shouldnât have asked her that.
***
It took me a while, but I finally escaped Toriâs grasp and managed to get to the read-through only an hour late.
âIs this a sign of how working with you is going to be?â Christian Ryder asked as soon as I walked through the door.
âChristian, go die,â I said, not even wanting to bother with him at the moment. I had just nearly gotten trampled by the crowd of stupid Ry-Hardâs standing outside. I wasn't in a good mood.
The people who were close enough to hear my comment laughed.
âShe was just fashionably late, Christian,â Nora said with a laugh. âIâm sure you know the meaning of that.â
Christian grumbled under his breath but said nothing more.
I put my stuff on an empty chair and ran a hand through my hair absentmindedly. This was going to be a long rehearsal⦠I could just feel it.
âSophia, take a seat, please,â Nora called out to me.
I turned around and looked for a place to sit. There were two seats open. One was next to Christian and the other was next to a creepy looking old man. I pondered which seat would be less horrifying for a moment, looking back and forth between the two chairs. I wasnât exactly being inconspicuous, so I was pretty sure everyone knew what I was doing. It didnât take me long to decide.
I went with the creepy old man.
Nora chuckled at my choice as I sat down. I glanced over at Christian out of the corner of my eye and saw that he looked annoyed.
âWell, letâs begin with some introductions,â Nora announced. âWeâre going to be stuck with each other for the next few months, so we might as well get this over with. Iâm Nora Harding and I am your director. Iâm very easy to get along with as long as you donât get on my bad side, of course. A fun fact about me is that I adore seafood. Christian, how about you?â
âDo I really have to introduce myself?â he asked, raising an eyebrow. âI think everyone knows who I am, honestly.â
I rolled my eyes. âSo modest, Christian.â
He gave me an annoyed look. âWell, itâs true.â
âSo what if itâs true? Have you never heard of humbleness, of modesty?â I asked, crossing my arms over my chest.
âIâm a celebrity. I donât know the meaning of those words. Besides, itâs the truth, so what does it matter?â
âIf thatâs the argument youâre going to go with, then you canât get mad at me when I throw the truth in your face anymore,â I pointed out smugly.
âI donât get mad for that anyways,â Christian replied haughtily.
I rolled my eyes. âSure. Whatever helps you sleep at night.â
He pressed his lips in a firm line, probably to keep from snapping at me.
I raised an eyebrow at him. âWell? Are you going to introduce yourself or not?â
âYou want to hear my introduction, huh?â he asked with a smirk. âMaybe youâre not such an Anti-Ry-Hard after all.â
I grimaced. âUgh. Never mind. Besides, I just realized I donât even care about your introduction. Whoâs next?â
âNo, itâs still my turn,â Christian said obstinately.
âI thought you didnât want to introduce yourself.â
âI changed my mind.â
And this was why I wanted to push him in front of a bus. Well, no, this was part of the reason.
âThis is going to be a long night,â an actress I didnât recognize said with a sigh.
I ignored her, instead choosing to stare at my nails. When I looked up, I saw that Christian was distracted talking to a cute actor I actually recognized. His name was Jake Bueller.
âSophia, how about you introduce yourself, since Christian is busy all of a sudden?â Nora suggested.
I shrugged and nodded. âAlright. My name is Sophia Hastings. My character is Emma van der Bilt. Iâm new to this, which is probably really obvious, but whatever.â A few of the cast members chuckled at this. âLike Nora, Iâm easy to get along with, as long as your name isnât Christian Ryder.â Everyone laughed openly at this, except for Christian, of course.
âTell us a fun fact about you,â Nora said, still laughing lightly.
âHmm⦠well, this is really random, but I canât think of anything except for this, for some reason⦠I can make that annoying chipmunk voice, like the ones in that movie, âAlvin and the Chipmunksâ.â
âReally?â Jake Bueller asked. âI have to hear this.â
âItâs really annoying,â I repeated, and then added, âYouâve been warned!â
He raised his hands up slightly and nodded with a smile.
I shrugged and said in the annoying chipmunk voice, âHey, Christian, why did the chicken cross the road?â
Christian's lips twitched upwards at my voice. âI donât know.â
âTo get away from you!â I cried in that same voice.
He rolled his eyes. âVery mature.â
âWhy, thank you,â I replied cheekily, speaking in my normal voice.
âChristian, would you please introduce yourself now that youâre no longer distracted?â
He nodded shortly. âMy nameâs Christian Ryder. My character is William Knight. Iâm actually not that easy to get along with, especially if your name is Sophia Hastings.â He smirked over at me. âI figured out your name, MG, by the way.â
I made a face at him. âOh, because it takes such intelligence to figure out something as simple as a name.â
âIt does when the person is a stubborn brat who canât answer the simplest questions.â
âItâs not that I canât answer them,â I retorted in irritation. âItâs that I choose not to. Weâve been over this, dipshit.â
He was about to reply when the actress I still couldnât recognize spoke. âSo, Chris, whatâs your fun fact about yourself?â
âI hate it when girls play hard to get,â he replied after a moment of thought.
I snorted. âOf course.â
âWhat?â he snapped.
âNothing,â I replied innocently.
âWhat?â he repeated.
I rolled my eyes. âNothing. I was just laughing because itâs such a⦠you thing to say.â
âWhat does that mean?â
âIt just means that Iâve been right all along,â I said, shrugging. âYouâre just a spoiled brat who is used to having everything handed to him on a silver platter. Even girls, apparently.â
âThatâs not true,â Christian snapped, his hand twitching.
âIsnât it? See, here you go again, getting angry over the truth. You really need to learn to accept the truth.â
âBut itâs not the truth!â
âYou keep telling yourself that, Christian.â
He growled in frustration. âSee, Nora? This is what I was talking about! Sheâs impossible!â
âIâm impossible?â I repeated shrilly. âYouâre impossible!â
âHow am I impossible?â he demanded, standing up.
âYouâre arguing with me, arenât you? Youâre not better than I am, then!â I cried, standing up as well.
âWhat am I supposed to do? Sit here and take it?â he asked in disbelief, shaking his head.
âIf you wanted to be the bigger person, then you would,â I replied.
âWhy donât you be the bigger person, then?â
âBecause you frustrate me,â I snapped, slapping my hand down.
âAnd you donât frustrate me?â he asked, walking towards me.
âI hope I do!â I exclaimed. âYou deserve it!â
He narrowed his eyes at me. âYouâre an inconsiderate brat who doesnât know the meaning ofââ
âYouâre a narcissistic, uncooperative asshole who needs to just go fââ
âWatch your mouth,â he interrupted before I could finish.
âWhy donât you make me?â I asked, poking a finger at his chest.
âDonât test me or I just might.â
âWhat are you going to do? Cover my mouth with your hand so I can bite you again? Itâll be good practice for when we get to that scene.â
He let out a loud breath, growling, âYouâre the most frustrating, annoying, selfish littleââ
âOkay, why donât we go outside and talk?â Nora jumped up, standing between us.
âI donât have anything to talk about with him,â I snapped just as he said, âI donât want to talk to her.â
âLetâs go,â Nora said with a sigh, dragging us outside.
Well. Seems like the snobby actress was right. This was going to be a long nightâ¦
