The Sword Saint’s Second Life As a Fox Girl
5-26 Replacement
âMathias, you say? Well, you can find him six feet deep underground in the townâs cemetery.â
That was the answer Siv got after asking around for the man who would ferry them upshore.
They had gone straight for the docks after they left the tavern. With Siv taking the lead, they first arrived at the supposed hut that was Mathiasâ residence, the man that Siv vouched to had impeccable skills when it came to manning a ship or a boat.
Strangely, the hut was empty and it had been this way for a long time. It was then they began to ask around about Mathiasâ whereabouts. Things took a strange turn from here on. Everyone they inquired, they would either feign ignorance or completely ignore the inquiry.
To hasten their inquiry, they decided to split into two teams. Siv ended up with Nivia and Amyra.
Not long after they split up, Siv stumbled upon an old acquaintance, a fellow sailor whom Siv knew from her past employment. The sailor, much like the others, was apprehensive towards their question but in the end, he told them of the fate that befell the old sailor.
âHeâs deadâ¦â Siv mused in deep thought.
âLooks like fate had made the choice for us,â Nivia said in an offhand manner. âSave us quite a bit of trouble.â
âOh, well.â Amyra shrugged. âOff to the younger one, I gather?â
âNot so fast,â said Siv and approached the sailor again. âPardon me but may I know how he died?â
The sailor cast a sidelong glance at Siv with a hint of annoyance and fear. His gaze faltered and slightly drifted in a certain direction but he didnât look away. âHe drowned,â answered the sailor after a brief hesitation.
âDrowned? Mathias? Heâs an excellent swimmer. How did this happen?â
âHe was drunk.â
âIt takes a full cask of rum to get him drunk and heâs not that fond of drinking. So, just how did he get himself so drunk that he forgot how to swim.â
âHell if I know all that. Youâre asking a lot of questions, Miss.â
âI simply wish to know the truth.â
âI told you the truth. In fact, I have told you enough. Now, please, leave me be.â
Siv stared at the sailor for a while before deciding to back off. After thanking the sailor for his answers, Siv retreated into an alley with Amyra and Nivia.
âHe was killed,â said Amyra once she made sure no one was eavesdropping on them.
âEvidently,â Nivia huffed. âMust have provoked the ire of someone powerful and now the whole town is afraid to even talk about his death.â
Siv shook her head. âThat doesnât sound like something Mathias would do. He had his pride but he never put his pride before his life.â
âKilled over a debt?â Amyra suggested.
âUnlikely too. It may not look like it but he has quite a fortune, enough for him to need not work for the rest of his life.â
âI reckon he doesnât gamble either?â
âHe doesnât,â Siv affirmed with a nod. âHe loves to sail. He spent his leisure hours on the water aboard his ship.â
âNow that heâs dead, what will happen to his fortune and his possessions?â
âThat is an excellent question,â Siv said. âHowever, I do not have an answer for that. We checked his residence. Itâs empty. His fortune, along with his other possessions, has been taken. By who, I do not know.â
âWell, whatever happened, itâs not our problem. Our own plate is already full enough and we have already garnered quite a bit of attention.â
Siv nodded solemnly. âIndeed, we have.â
Nivia picked up the nuance. âWeâre being followed?â she asked as quietly as possible.
Amyra chuckled wryly. âOf course, we are.â
âThis is becoming the norm for us.â Nivia sighed. âWhere? How many?â
âOn the rooftop across from this alley,â Amyra answered. âThereâs only one of them. He ainât much.â
âAmateur,â Siv muttered.
Nivia had her hands on her gear. âExpose or ignore?â
âIgnore,â Siv said. âIf all they do is follow us, let them. We have no quarrel with them and weâre not looking for any.â
âThe big lady sure would hate it if we took any action without consulting her first.â
âJust what have we done to even attract a stalker?â Nivia pondered out loud.
âWe asked around for a deceased person whose death has strange circumstances, for one.â
âHaving someone tail us just because we ask some questions, thatâs an overreaction. They are only making this all the more suspicious.â
âAs Siv said, we could be dealing with amateurs. Orâ¦â
âOr?â
âTheir business with the dead man isnât over.â
âHow so?â
Amyra shrugged. âI donât know. Itâs just a guess. Think nothing of it. Anyway, we got our answer. Letâs regroup with Erin and the rest.â
It was a unanimous agreement. They got what they set out for and itâs best for them to return as soon as possible. However, before they could step out of the alley, a large figure appeared at the egress. The large figure was a tall man with dark skin, wearing a sleeveless white shirt that showed off his two muscular arms that were covered in meaningful tattoos.
âLike a moth to a flameâ¦â Amyra muttered with a regretful smile.
âWho are you?â Siv went straight to the point and prepared to draw her swords.
âI wish to ask you the same thing,â the man said with a thick accent. âYou came into the town just this noon. And all of a sudden, you start asking so many questions about a dead man.â
âThe man was an acquaintance and I had business with him.â
âIs that all there is?â
âYes.â
âWhatâs your business with him?â
âPrivate and personal,â Amyra responded in Sivâs stead.
âHeed my words, you three. It will be best to not let your pride get in the way of something so simple.â
âClearly, this is anything but simple and you are the one getting in our way. We donât even intend on being in this town for long.â
âYou are not going anywhere until you tell me why you are looking for Mathias.â
âAnd what? You will just let us go after we tell you?â Nivia snorted. âDo you take us for children?â
The man sighed. âIt always comes to this.â
Amyra chortled. âThat we can both agree.â She reached for her sword but before she drew it out, she stopped.
There was another man. He appeared the same way the dark-skinned man did. He also had dark skin but that was not all to his peculiarity. His ears were long and pointed like an Elf, but he was no Elf.
âAn Umbrum,â Siv blurted.
The man didnât seem surprised by the Umbrumâs appearance. However, he did seem baffled and astonished by what the Umbrum whispered to him. Whatever the Umbrum told him, it appeared to be related to Siv and the two as his eyes bounced between them and the Umbrum.
âAre you being serious?â the man asked.
âI am,â the Umbrum answered.
âWhat are the odds?â the man scoffed.
âDonât try it. Mister Rhys will not be happy if you do.â
âFine.â The man relented. He then glanced over to Siv and the others. âConsider yourself lucky this time.â
And just like that, the man walked off along with the Umbrum.
Silence loomed over the three for a while
â...What just happened?â Nivia asked.
Amyra shook her shoulders. âHavenât a clue.â
âRhysâ¦â Siv mused. âWhoever this person is, they seem to be the one governing this town and they are⦠wary of us.â
âAfraid of us, I say. Or maybe afraid of Erin.â
âErinâs in disguise.â Nivia pointed out. âHow would he know?â
âPerhaps this Rhys person has heard of Erinâs exploit and he could easily put all the obvious clues together. I mean, we are a band of misfits. How many adventurer parties out have the same diversity as ours?â
â...I suppose you have a point,â Nivia groaned.
âOr maybe he could be afraid of His Grace.â
âWhy would anyone be afraid of him?â Nivia scoffed. âWe are aware of his true identity but I donât think others would, especially those who are not under the grace of Aeryo.â
âAs far as those who are privy to the affairs of faith are concerned, His Grace is still the Grand Apostle of Aeryo, even if they do not know of his true race.â
Nivia frowned. âThe Grand Apostle?â
âThe Apostle who stood above the other Apostles.â
âThis is the first I have heard of such a title.â
âItâs a title that only exists in certain faiths. Having a Grand Apostle denotes inequality in the order. Apostles are, more often than not, extremely proud of their status. They would not have anyone above them other than their Divine.â
âBut the Aeryons have one.â
âHis Grace is the heir to the Divine Throne. Even if heâs not the Grand Apostle, he is still above all Aeryon. Might as well make him the Grand Apostle.â
Nivia rolled her eyes. âYou mortal beings sure love your titles.â
Amyra smiled and walked out of the alley without refuting Niviaâs words.
Together, they hurriedly returned to the spot where they had agreed to convene after half an hour. They arrived five minutes later than the appointed time. Erin and the rest were already there.
âYouâre late,â Lyra said with her arms crossed.
âApologies. We were⦠tangled up in some complicated matters.â
âOh, my.â Lilian gasped lightly. âSo were we but we untangled ourselves pretty swiftly.â
âRhysâ men?â Erin asked.
Amyra nodded. She then briefly recounted the incident that had just transpired.
âThis is curious,â Aedan said. âWe were confronted by Rhysâ men too but they merely warned us to leave this port at our earliest convenience. Although, they do look very⦠anxious towards us. More specifically, towards our lovely Erin.â
Erin sighed. âWhatever the reason is, it is not our concern. They are not bothering us. Thatâs good. So, we donât bother them any more than we already had at the tavern.â
Amyra smiled wryly in response.
âAnyway, our first option is⦠unavailable. Let us move on to the second. Where do we find the boy?â
âAround this time of the day, he should be at the harbour.â
And so, the group headed for the harbour. They waded through the crowd of a variety of people and arrived at a lonely dock that was separated from all the hustle and bustle. This particular dock had a cabin perched right in the middle and it looked like it was in dire need of some fixing.
Siv walked up to the door and gave it a gentle knock. Not a moment later, the door creaked open and a pair of eyes peeked through.
âYes? May I help you?â asked a feminine voice.
âRiki, it has been a long time,â Siv greeted.
The door swung wide open and a boy with oddly feminine features stepped through. âSiv?â
âYes, itâs me, Riki.â
âGods bless me.â The boy sighed and rushed out the doorway. âIt's so good to see you,â he said, taking Siv's hand and shaking it.
âItâs good to see you too, Riki.â
âWhereâs Wrev?â
âWrev⦠Well, heâs⦠uhâ¦â
âAh, Iâm so sorry, Siv.â The boy was quick to catch the signs. âMay I know what happened?â
âA monster horde. He died defending a town from a horde.â
âI see⦠Itâs a noble death for your kind, isnât it?â
âIt is but⦠I donât think I agree with that.â
âHuh, r-really?â
âEnough about that, Riki. Itâs the past now. The dead are at rest. The living continue their burden, which is why Iâm here, Riki. We would like to hire you.â
âWe?ân/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
Siv stepped aside and showed the boy her companions. âThese are my companions.â
âW-whoaâ¦â Riki gasped as he feasted his eyes on the beauties that stood before him. He was absolutely dazed.
âAnd this lady here is my Mistress.â
âHuh, your Mistress?â Riki blinked. âYouâre no longer working for Lord Hegan?â
âI have left his service. I am now pledged to this lady here, Erynthea.â
Erin stepped forward and undid her disguise, flourishing her elegant silver hair and her magnificent seven tails.
Rikiâs eyes turned as wide as they could.
