One day I might break One day I might
Warner canât hide his surprise when he walks back into the room.
I look up, close the notebook in my hands. âIâm taking this back,â I say to him.
He blinks at me. âYouâre feeling better.â
I nod over my shoulder. âMy notebook was just sitting here, on the bedside table.â
âYes,â he says slowly. Carefully.
âIâm taking it back.â
âI understand.â Heâs still standing by the door, still frozen in place, still staring. âAre youââhe shakes his headââIâm sorry, are you going somewhere?â
Itâs only then that I realize Iâm already halfway to the door. âI need to get out of here.â
Warner says nothing. He takes a few careful steps into the room, slips off his jacket, drapes it over a chair. He pulls three guns out of the holster strapped to his back and takes his time placing them on the table where my notebook used to be. When he finally looks up he has a slight smile on his face.
Hands in his pockets. His smile a little bigger. âWhere are you going, love?â
âI have some things I need to take care of.â
âIs that right?â He leans one shoulder against the wall, crosses his arms against his chest. He canât stop smiling.
âYes.â Iâm getting irritated now.
Warner waits. Stares. Nods once, as if to say, Go on.
âYour fatherââ
âIs not here.â
âOh.â
I try to hide my shock, but now I donât know why I was so certain Anderson would still be here. This complicates things.
âYou really thought you could just walk out of this room,â Warner says to me, âknock on my fatherâs door, and do away with him?â
Yes. âNo.â
âLiar, liar, pants on fire,â Warner says softly.
I glare at him.
âMy father is gone,â Warner says. âHeâs gone back to the capital, and heâs taken Sonya and Sara with him.â
I gasp, horrified. âNo.â
Warner isnât smiling anymore.
âAre they . . . alive?â I ask.
âI donât know.â A simple shrug. âI imagine they must be, as theyâre of no use to my father in any other condition.â
âTheyâre alive?â My heart picks up so quickly I might be having a heart attack. âI have to get them backâI have to find them, Iââ
âYou what?â Warner is looking at me closely. âHow will you get to my father? How will you fight him?â
âI donât know!â Iâm pacing across the room now. âBut I have to find them. They might be my only friends left in this world andââ
I stop.
I spin around suddenly, heart in my throat.
âWhat if there are others?â I whisper, too afraid to hope.
I meet Warner across the room.
âWhat if there are other survivors?â I ask, louder now. âWhat if theyâre hiding somewhere?â
âThat seems unlikely.â
âBut thereâs a chance, isnât there?â Iâm desperate. âIf thereâs even the slightest chanceââ
Warner sighs. Runs a hand through the hair at the back of his head. âIf youâd seen the devastation the way that I did, you wouldnât be saying such things. Hope will break your heart all over again.â
My knees have begun to buckle.
I cling to the bed frame, breathing fast, hands shaking. I donât know anything anymore. I donât actually know whatâs happened to Omega Point. I donât know where the capital is or how Iâd get there. I donât know if Iâd even be able to get to Sonya and Sara in time. But I canât shake this sudden, stupid hope that more of my friends have somehow survived.
Because theyâre stronger than thisâsmarter.
âTheyâve been planning for war for such a long time,â I hear myself say. âThey must have had some kind of a backup plan. A place to hideââ
âJulietteââ
âDammit, Warner! I have to try. You have to let me look.â
âThis is unhealthy.â He wonât meet my eyes. âItâs dangerous for you to think thereâs a chance anyone might still be alive.â
I stare at his strong, steady profile.
He studies his hands.
âPlease,â I whisper.
He sighs.
âI have to head to the compounds in the next day or so, just to better oversee the process of rebuilding the area.â He tenses as he speaks. âWe lost many civilians,â he says. âToo many. The remaining citizens are understandably traumatized and subdued, as was my fatherâs intention. Theyâve been stripped of any last hope they mightâve had for rebellion.â
A tight breath.
âAnd now everything must be quickly put back in order,â he says. âThe bodies are being cleared out and incinerated. The damaged housing units are being replaced. Civilians are being forced to go back to work, orphans are being moved, and the remaining children are required to attend their sector schools.
âThe Reestablishment,â he says, âdoes not allow time for people to grieve.â
Thereâs a heavy silence between us.
âWhile Iâm overseeing the compounds,â Warner says, âI can find a way to take you back to Omega Point. I can show you whatâs happened. And then, once you have proof, you will have to make your choice.â
âWhat choice?â
âYou have to decide your next move. You can stay with me,â he says, hesitating, âor, if you prefer, I can arrange for you to live undetected, somewhere on unregulated grounds. But it will be a solitary existence,â he says quietly. âYou can never be discovered.â
âOh.â
A pause.
âYes,â he says.
Another pause.
âOr,â I say to him, âI leave, find your father, kill him, and deal with the consequences on my own.â
Warner fights a smile and fails.
He glances down and laughs just a little before looking me right in the eye. He shakes his head.
âWhatâs so funny?â
âMy dear girl.â
âWhat?â
âI have been waiting for this moment for a long time now.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âYouâre finally ready,â he says. âYouâre finally ready to fight.â
Shock courses through me. âOf course I am.â
In an instant Iâm bombarded by memories of the battlefield, the terror of being shot to death. I have not forgotten my friends or my renewed conviction, my determination to do things differently. To make a difference. To really fight this time, with no hesitation. No matter what happensâand no matter what I discoverâthereâs no turning back for me anymore. There are no other alternatives.
I have not forgotten. âI forge forward or die.â
Warner laughs out loud. He looks like he might cry.
âI am going to kill your father,â I say to him, âand Iâm going to destroy The Reestablishment.â
Heâs still smiling.
âI will.â
âI know,â he says.
âThen why are you laughing at me?â
âIâm not,â he says softly. âIâm only wondering,â he says, âif you would like my help.â
