Ignite Me: Chapter 36
Ignite Me (Shatter Me Book 3)
Weâre all sitting on benches around the training room. Warner is sitting next to me and Iâm doing everything I can to make sure our shoulders donât accidentally touch.
âAll right, so, first things first, right?â Winston says, looking around. âWe have to get Sonya and Sara back. The question is how.â A pause. âWe have no idea how to get to the supreme.â
Everyone looks at Warner.
Warner looks at his watch.
âWell?â Kenji says.
âWell, what?â Warner says, bored.
âWell, arenât you going to help us?â Ian snaps. âThis is your territory.â
Warner looks at me for the first time all evening. âYouâre absolutely sure you trust these people?â he asks me. âAll of them?â
âYes,â I say quietly. âI really do.â
âVery well.â Warner takes a deep breath before addressing the group. âMy father,â he says calmly, âis on a ship. In the middle of the ocean.â
âHeâs on a ship?â Kenji asks, startled. âThe capital is a ship?â
âNot exactly.â Warner hesitates. âBut the point is, we have to lure him here. Going to him will not work. We have to create a problem big enough for him to be forced to come to us.â He looks at me then. âJuliette says she already has a plan.â
I nod. Take a deep breath. Study the faces before me. âI think we should take over Sector 45.â
Stunned silence.
âI think, together,â I tell them, âweâll be able to convince the soldiers to fight on our side. At the end of the day, no one is benefiting from The Reestablishment except for the people in charge. The soldiers are tired and hungry and probably only took this job because there were no other options.â I pause. âWe can rally the civilians and the soldiers. Everyone in the sector. Get them to join us. And they know me,â I say. âThe soldiers. Theyâve already seen meâthey know what I can do. But all of us together?â I shake my head. âThat would be amazing. We could show them that weâre different. Stronger. We can give them hopeâa reason to fight back.
âAnd then,â I say, âonce we have their support, news will spread, and Anderson will be forced to come back here. Heâll have to try and take us downâheâll have no other choice. And once heâs back, we take him out. We fight him and his army and we win. And then we take over the country.â
âMy goodness.â
Castle is the first to speak.
âMs. Ferrars,â he says, âyouâve given this a great deal of thought.â
I nod.
Kenji is looking at me like heâs not sure if he should laugh or applaud.
âWhat do you think?â I ask, looking around.
âWhat if it doesnât work?â Lily says. âWhat if the soldiers are too scared to change their allegiance? What if they kill you instead?â
âThatâs a definite possibility,â I say. âBut I think if weâre strong enoughâif the nine of us stand united, with all of our strengths combinedâI think theyâll believe we can do something pretty amazing.â
âYeah but how will they know what our strengths are?â Brendan asks. âWhat if they donât believe us?â
âWe can show them.â
âAnd if they shoot us?â Ian counters.
âI can do it alone, if youâre worried about that. I donât mind. Kenji was teaching me how to project my energy before the war, and I think if I can learn to master that, I could do some pretty scary things. Things that might impress them enough to join us.â
âYou can project?â Winston asks, eyes wide. âYou mean you can, like, mass-kill everyone with your life-sucking thing?â
âUm, no,â I say. âI mean, well, yes, I suppose I could do that, too, but Iâm not talking about that. I mean I can project my strength. Not the . . . life-sucking thingââ
âWait, what strength?â Brendan asks, confused. âI thought itâs your skin thatâs lethal?â
Iâm about to respond when I remember that Brendan and Winston and Ian were all taken hostage before Iâd begun to seriously train. I donât know that they knew much about my progress at all.
So I start from the top.
âMy . . . power,â I say, âhas to do with more than just my skin.â I glance at Kenji. Gesture to him. âWeâd been working together for a while, trying to figure out what it was, exactly, I was capable of, and Kenji realized that my true energy is coming from deep within me, not the surface. Itâs in my bones, my blood, and my skin,â I try to explain. âMy real power is an insane kind of superstrength.
âMy skin is just one element of that,â I tell them. âItâs like the most heightened form of my energy, and the craziest form of protection; itâs like my body has put up a shield. Metaphorical barbed wire. It keeps intruders away.â I almost laugh, wondering when it became so easy for me to talk about this stuff. To be comfortable with it. âBut Iâm also strong enough to break through just about anything,â I tell them, âand without even injuring myself. Concrete. Brick. Glassââ
âThe earth,â Kenji adds.
âYes,â I say, smiling at him. âEven the earth.â
âShe created an earthquake,â Alia says eagerly, and Iâm actually surprised to hear her voice. âDuring the first battle,â she tells Brendan and Winston and Ian. âWhen we were trying to save you guys. She punched the ground and it split open. Thatâs how we were able to get away.â
The guys are gawking at me.
âSo, what Iâm trying to say,â I tell them, âis that if I can project my strength, and really learn to control it? I donât know.â I shrug. âI could move mountains, probably.â
âThatâs a bit ambitious.â Kenji grins, ever the proud parent.
âAmbitious, but probably not impossible.â I grin back.
âWow,â Lily says. âSo you can just . . . destroy stuff? Like, anything?â
I nod. Glance at Warner. âDo you mind?â
âNot at all,â he says. His eyes are carefully inscrutable.
I get to my feet and walk over to the stacks of dumbbells, all the while prepping myself mentally to tap into my energy. This is still the trickiest part for me: learning how to moderate my strength with finesse.
I pick up a fifty-pound free weight and carry it over to the group.
For a moment I wonder if this should feel heavy to me, especially considering how it weighs about half of what I do, but I canât really feel it.
I sit back down on the bench. Rest the weight on the ground.
âWhat are you going to do with that?â Ian asks, eyes wide.
âWhat do you want me to do?â I ask him.
âYouâre telling me you can just, like, rip that apart or whatever?â Winston says.
I nod.
âDo it,â Kenji says. Heâs practically bouncing in his seat. âDo it do it.â
So I do.
I pick it up, and literally crush the weight between my hands. It becomes a mangled mess of metal. A fifty-pound lump. I rip it in half and drop the two pieces on the floor.
The benches shake.
âSorry,â I say quickly, looking around. âI didnât mean to toss it like thatââ
âGoddamn,â Ian says. âThat is so cool.â
âDo it again,â Winston says, eyes bright.
âIâd really rather she didnât destroy all of my property,â Warner cuts in.
âHey, soâwaitâ,â Winston says, realizing something as he stares at Warner. âYou can do that, too, canât you? You can just take her power and use it like that, too?â
âI can take all of your powers,â Warner corrects him. âAnd do whatever I want with them.â
The terror in the room is a very palpable thing.
I frown at Warner. âPlease donât scare them.â
He says nothing. Looks at nothing.
âSo the two of youââIan tries to find his voiceââI mean, togetherâyou two could basicallyââ
âTake over the world?â Warner is looking at the wall now.
âI was going to say you could kick some serious ass, but yeah, that, too, I guess.â Ian shakes his head.
âAre you sure you trust this guy?â Lily asks me, jerking a thumb at Warner and looking at me like sheâs seriously, genuinely concerned. âWhat if heâs just using you for your power?â
âI trust him with my life,â I say quietly. âI already have, and Iâd do it again.â
Warner looks at me and looks away, and for a brief second I catch the charge of emotion in his eyes.
âSo, let me get this straight,â Winston says. âOur plan is to basically seduce the soldiers and civilians of Sector 45 into fighting with us?â
Kenji crosses his arms. âYeah, it sounds like weâre going to go all peacock and hope they find us attractive enough to mate with.â
âGross.â Brendan frowns.
âDespite how weird Kenji just made this sound,â I say, shooting a stern look in his direction, âthe answer is yes, basically. We can provide them with a group to rally around. We take charge of the army, and then take charge of the people. And then we lead them into battle. We really, truly fight back.â
âAnd if you win?â Castle asks. Heâs been so quiet all this time. âWhat do you plan to do then?â
âWhat do you mean?â I ask.
âLetâs say you are successful,â he says. âYou defeat the supreme. You kill him and his men. Then what? Who will take over as the supreme commander?â
âI will.â
The room gasps. I feel Warner go stiff beside me.
âDamn, princess,â Kenji says quietly.
âAnd then?â Castle asks, ignoring everyone but me. âAfter that?â His eyes are worried. Scared, almost. âYouâre going to kill whoever else stands in your way? All the other sector leaders, all across the nation? Thatâs 554 more warsââ
âSome will surrender,â I tell him.
âAnd the others?â he asks. âHow can you lead a nation in the right direction when youâve just slaughtered all who oppose you? How will you be any different from those youâve defeated?â
âI trust myself,â I tell him, âto be strong enough to do whatâs right. Our world is dying right now. You said yourself that we have the means to reclaim our landâto change things back to the way they were. Once power is in the right placeâwith usâyou can rebuild what you started at Omega Point. Youâll have the freedom to implement those changes to our land, water, animals, and atmosphere, and save millions of lives in the processâgiving the new generations hope for a different future. We have to try,â I tell him. âWe canât just sit back and watch people die when we have the power to make a difference.â
The room goes silent. Still.
âHell,â Winston says. âIâd follow you into battle.â
âMe too,â Alia says.
âAnd me.â Brendan.
âYou know Iâm in,â Kenji says.
âMe too,â Lily and Ian say at the same time.
Castle takes a deep breath. âMaybe,â he says. He leans back in his chair, clasps his hands. âMaybe youâll be able to do right what I did wrong.â He shakes his head. âI am twenty-seven years your senior and Iâve never had your confidence, but I do understand your heart. And I trust that you say what you believe to be true.â A pause. A careful look. âWe will support you. But know now that you are taking on a great and terrifying responsibility. One that may backfire in an irreversible way.â
âI do understand that,â I say quietly.
âVery well then, Ms. Ferrars. Good luck, and godspeed. Our world is in your hands.â
