Ignite Me: Chapter 53
Ignite Me (Shatter Me Book 3)
I get to my feet.
Adam is standing across the room, talking to Winston and Ian. Everyone falls silent as I approach. And if Adam is thinking or feeling anything at all about me, he doesnât show it.
âYou have to tell him,â I say.
âWhat?â Adam startles.
âYou have to tell him the truth,â I say. âAnd if you donât, I will.â
All at once Adamâs eyes are a frozen ocean, cold and closed off. âDonât push me, Juliette. Donât say stupid things youâre going to regret.â
âYou have no right to keep this from him. He has no one in this world, and he deserves to know.â
âThis is none of your business,â Adam says. Heâs towering over me, his fists clenched. âStay out of it. Donât force me to do something I donât want to do.â
âAre you actually threatening me?â I ask. âAre you insane?â
âMaybe youâve forgotten,â he says, âthat Iâm the only one in this room who can shut you off. But I havenât. You have no power against me.â
âOf course I have power against you,â I tell him. âMy touch was killing you when we were togetherââ
âYeah, well, things have changed a lot since then.â He grabs my hand, yanking so hard I nearly fall forward. I try to pull away and I canât.
Heâs too strong.
âAdam, let go of meââ
âCan you feel that?â he asks, eyes a crazy, stormy shade of blue.
âWhat?â I ask. âFeel what?â
âExactly,â he says. âThereâs nothing there. Youâre empty. No power, no fire, no superstrength. Just a girl who canât throw a punch to save her life. And Iâm perfectly fine. Unharmed.â
I swallow hard and meet his cold gaze. âSo youâve done it, then?â I ask. âYou managed to control it?â
âOf course I did,â he says angrily. âAnd you couldnât waitâeven though I told you I could do itâyou couldnât wait even though I told you I was training so we could be togetherââ
âIt doesnât matter anymore.â Iâm staring at my hand in his, his refusal to let go. âWe wouldâve ended up in the same place sooner or later.â
âThatâs not trueâthis is proof!â he says, holding up my hand. âWe couldâve made it workââ
âWeâre too different now. We want different things. And this?â I say, nodding at our hands. âAll this managed to prove is that you are extremely good at turning me off.â
Adamâs jaw clenches.
âNow let go of my hand.â
âHeyâcan we please refrain from putting on a shitshow tonight?â Kenjiâs voice booms from across the room. Heâs heading toward us. Pissed.
âStay out of this,â Adam snaps at him.
âItâs called consideration. There are other people living in this room, jackass,â Kenji says once heâs close enough. He grabs Adamâs arm. âSo knock it off.â
Adam breaks away angrily. âDonât touch me.â
Kenji shoots him a sharp look. âLet go of her.â
âYou know what?â Adam says, his anger taking over. âYouâre so obsessed with herâjumping to her defense all the time, getting involved in our conversations all the timeâyou like her so much? Fine. You can have her.â
Time freezes all around us.
The stage is set:
Adam and his wild eyes, his rage and his red face.
Kenji standing next to him, annoyed, slightly confused.
And me, my hand still locked in Adamâs viselike grip, his touch so quickly and easily reducing me back to who I was when we first met.
Iâm completely powerless.
But then, in one movement, everything changes: Adam grabs Kenjiâs bare hand and presses it into my empty one.
For just long enough.
