Ignite Me: Chapter 63
Ignite Me (Shatter Me Book 3)
Weâre all sitting around again.
Talking. Discussing. Thinking and planning. James is snoring soundly in the corner.
Weâre all caught somewhere between being excited and being terrified, and yet, somehow, weâre mostly excited. This is, after all, what everyone at Omega Point had always been planning; theyâd joined Castle hoping it would one day come to this.
A chance to defeat The Reestablishment.
Theyâve all been training for this. Even Adam, who somehow convinced himself to stand with us, has been a soldier. Kenji, a soldier. All of them in peak physical condition. They are all fighters; even Alia, whose quiet shell contains so much. I couldnât have asked for a more solid group of individuals.
âSo when do you think heâll be here?â Ian is asking. âTomorrow?â
âMaybe,â Kenji says. âBut I donât think itâll take him more than two days.â
âI thought he was on a ship? In the middle of the ocean?â Lily asks. âHow is he supposed to get here in two days?â
âI donât think itâs the kind of ship youâre thinking of,â Castle says to her. âI imagine he is on an army vessel; one equipped with a landing strip. If he calls for a jet, they will deliver him to us.â
âWow.â Brendan leans back, rests on his hands. âThis is really happening, then? The supreme commander of The Reestablishment. Winston and I never saw him, not once, even though his men were holding us captive.â He shakes his head. Glances at me. âWhat does he look like?â
âHeâs extremely handsome,â I say.
Lily laughs out loud.
âIâm serious,â I say to her. âItâs almost sick how beautiful he is.â
âReally?â Winston is staring at me, eyes wide.
Kenji nods. âVery pretty guy.â
Lily is gawking.
âAnd you said his name is Anderson?â Alia asks.
I nod.
âThatâs strange,â Lily says. âI always thought Warnerâs last name was Warner, not Anderson.â She thinks for a second. âSo his name is Warner Anderson?â
âNo,â I say to her. âYouâre right. Warner is his last nameâbut not his dadâs. He took his momâs last name,â I say. âHe didnât want to be associated with his father.â
Adam snorts.
We all look at him.
âSo whatâs Warnerâs first name?â Ian asks. âDo you know?â
I nod.
âAnd?â Winston asks. âYouâre not going to tell us?â
âAsk him yourself,â I say. âIf he wants to tell you, Iâm sure he will.â
âYeah, thatâs not going to happen,â Winston says. âIâm not asking that guy personal questions.â
I try not to laugh.
âSoâdo you know Andersonâs first name?â Ian asks. âOr is that a secret, too? I mean this whole thing is really weird, right? That theyâd be so secretive about their names?â
âOh,â I say, caught off guard. âIâm not sure. Thereâs a lot of power in a name, I guess. And no,â I say, shaking my head. âI donât actually know Andersonâs first name. I never asked.â
âYouâre not missing anything,â Adam says, irritated. âItâs a stupid name.â Heâs staring at his shoes. âHis name is Paris.â
âHow did you know that?â
I spin around and find Warner standing just outside the open elevator. Itâs still pinging softly, only just now signaling his arrival. The doors close behind him. Heâs staring at Adam in shock.
Adam blinks fast at Warner and then at us, unsure what to do.
âHow did you know that?â Warner demands again. He walks right through our group and grabs Adam by the shirt, moving so quickly Adam has no time to react.
He pins him against the wall.
Iâve never heard Warner raise his voice like this before. Never seen him so angry. âWho do you answer to, soldier?â he shouts. âWho is your commander?â
âI donât know what youâre talking about!â Adam yells back. He tries breaking away and Warner grabs him with both fists, shoving him harder against the wall.
Iâm beginning to panic.
âHow long have you been working for him?â Warner shouts again. âHow long have you been infiltrating my baseââ
I jump to my feet. Kenji is close behind.
âWarner,â I say, âplease, heâs not a spyââ
âThereâs no way he could know something like that,â Warner says to me, still looking at Adam. âNot unless he is a member of the Supreme Guard, where even then it would be questionable. A foot soldier would never have that kind of informationââ
âIâm not a Supreme Soldier,â Adam tries to say, âI swearââ
âLiar,â Warner barks, shoving him harder against the wall. Adamâs shirt is starting to tear. âWhy were you sent here? What is your mission? Has he sent you to kill me?â
âWarner,â I call again, pleading this time, running forward until Iâm in his line of vision. âPleaseâheâs not working for the supreme, I promiseââ
âHow can you know?â Warner finally glances at me, just for a second. âIâm telling you,â he says, âitâs impossible for him to know thisââ
âHeâs your brother,â I finally choke out. âPlease. Heâs your brother. You have the same father.â
Warner goes rigid.
He turns to me.
âWhat?â he breathes.
âItâs true,â I tell him, feeling so heartbroken as I do. âAnd I know you can tell Iâm not lying.â I shake my head. âHeâs your brother. Your father was leading a double life. He abandoned Adam and James a long time ago. After Adamâs mom died.â
Warner drops Adam to the floor.
âNo,â Warner says. Heâs not even blinking. Just staring. Hands shaking.
I turn to look at Adam, eyes tight with emotion. âTell him,â I say, desperate now. âTell him the truth.â
Adam says nothing.
âDammit, Adam, tell him!â
âYou knew, all this time?â Warner asks, turning to face me. âYou knew this and yet you said nothing?â
âI wanted toâI really, really wanted to, but I didnât think it was my placeââ
âNo,â he says, cutting me off. Heâs shaking his head. âNo, this doesnât make any sense. Howâhow is that even possible?â He looks up, looks around. âThat doesnâtââ
He stops.
Looks at Adam.
âTell me the truth,â he says. He walks up to Adam again, looking like he might shake him. âTell me! I have a right to know!â
And every moment in the world drops dead just then, because they woke up and realized theyâd never be as important as this one.
âItâs true,â Adam says.
Two words to change the world.
Warner steps back, hand caught in his hair. Heâs rubbing his eyes, his forehead, running his hand down his mouth, his neck. Heâs breathing so hard. âHow?â he finally asks.
And then.
And then.
The truth.
Little by little. Itâs pulled out of Adam. One word at a time. And the rest of us are looking on, and James is still sleeping, and I go silent as these two brothers have the hardest conversation Iâve ever had to watch.
