“So, you agreed to see me just so you could tell me that you would never do what I ask no matter how I beg you?”

Each word came out of her mouth with great difficulty, but she asked the question anyway.

There was a faint smile on his lips. He raised his hand and gently brushed a stray strand of hair on her face behind her ear with his long fingers.

“Back then, you told me that you wouldn’t stay with me, that you didn’t need me to change your fate, that you would never regret it…”

His moves were graceful, and his voice was soft and gentle. He bent over and leaned his lips closer to her ear, and she could feel his breath brushing against it, his breath enveloping her ear and neck.

In contrast, her whole body was frozen stiff. She felt as if a heavy boulder was pressing down against her chest, making it almost impossible for her to breathe.

“I wanted to see you so you’d understand how comically wrong you were when you said you

regret it.”

He then looked intently into her eyes.

But at that moment, it felt like her whole body was immersed in icy cold water.

Serenity could not even remember how she left Jackson’s office.

He had never planned to agree to her request from the start, and in fact, she had no right to ask him for anything at all.

All she had gotten from this meeting was nothing but humiliation.

The next day, Serenity’s mind was so preoccupied that she was almost absent–minded at work. Her relatives had called her again, telling her that her grandmother had gotten worse now. The doctor explained that it was Alzheimer’s disease, and it was advancing very quickly too. For others, it might take a few years for the disease to advance, but for her grandmother, it had only taken a short while for her condition to get this bad, and it was only going to get even worse from now on.

“The doctor also said that you should let your grandma see her children as soon as possible,” Her relative urged. “This is the only thing that can help her, so how much longer do you want to keep them locked up??”

She was clearly unsuitable for this man. If she took advantage of his kindness and generosity, she would only hurt him even more.

“Never mind,” She told him, “My place isn’t too far from here. I can easily walk home.”

“But you don’t look well at all!” He hastily added.

“No.” She insisted, “It’s fine.”

After speaking, she walked past him and left the Sanitation Office.
