Chapter 12.1
Raising the Northern Grand Duchy as a Max-Level All-Master
â
âHe didnât seem like a mage, though?â
Arina muttered, recalling Arad cooking at Jackâs inn.
âNo, he definitely wasnât a mage.â
âThatâs correct. While he did have some magical energy, it wasnât enough to qualify as a mage.â
âEven if he studied magic, heâd barely manage to conjure a small fireball.â
âWith that level of magic, heâd be better off integrating it with craftsmanship and learning swordsmanship instead.â
The knights unanimously offered their evaluations of Aradâs potential.
âcan I see the list of items heâs purchased?â
Arina, out of curiosity, requested the list.
âHere it is.â
Balzac immediately handed her a sheet of paper.
The list detailed all the items Arad had purchased from Havenâs merchant guilds and adventurers.
ââ¦â
As Arina scanned the list, her brow furrowed.
âSome of these items are flagged as contraband. And the amount of magic stones heâs boughtâitâs technically illegal for an individual to purchase so many.â
Parts of the list irked her meticulous adherence to rules.
The guards and officials of Haven must have given Arad significant leeway.
âThe free stew must have worked wonders. Could he have planned this?â
After scrutinizing the paper for a few more seconds, she set it down.
âIâll let it slide.â
Exercising rare flexibility, she decided to overlook it.
The items werenât overly problematic, and she valued Aradâs loyaltyâespecially after his creation of Arad Salt and his desire to serve her.
âWhat could he be planning?â
âHopefully something as remarkable as Arad Salt.â
âSo, should we leave him be for now?â
âFor now, yes. The necromancer in the Demonic Realm is our priority.â
Thus, a potential crisis for Arad passed without his knowledge.
â
The meeting at the inn was approaching its conclusion.
âPrepare reserves in the High Tower and Haven, just in case. Also, instruct them to coat their weapons in silver.â
The major decisions had been made.
Arina was now confirming the smaller ones.
âUnderstood.â
âGood. Weâll inspect Havenâs defenses before leaving with the reinforcements.â
The forces being prepared in the High Tower and Haven were primarily reserves, meant for emergencies.
âItâs unfortunate that Sun and the Frostshield Legion are out on an expedition at a time like this.â
One of the knights sighed, lamenting the absence of Rensletâs main forces, who were currently subduing extreme northern orcs and barbarians.
âEven if Sun and the Frostshield Legion were here, it wouldnât change our strategy, Sir Roj.â
Arina shook her head at the knightâs murmur.
âNumbers mean little against a necromancer.â
The Grand Duke and her knights were the only ones who could truly deal with the necromancer.
Necromancers, black mages who commanded the dead, were best handled with precision strikes by an elite team.
Bringing a large force would only provide the necromancer with more bodies to animate.
âYour Grace, perhaps itâs better if you remain in Haven with the reinforcements?â
Balzac cautiously suggested to Arina.
âThis is no ordinary hunt in the Demonic Realm. Itâs extremely dangerous.â
But Arina rejected Balzacâs careful advice.
âIf I start avoiding danger for this or that reason, itâll never end. Iâd quickly become a coward, and the Northâs unity and resolve would crumble.â
âBut⦠if anything were to happen to you, Renslet would be annihilated. The North would fall into the Empireâs hands.â
The North had no successor, especially after the previous Grand Duke, Baikal, had died in battle.
Despite the Northâs tradition of rulers leading from the front, Balzac felt that Arina needed to prioritize her safety this time.
âThe danger is exactly why I must go. Iâm not just a Grand DukeâIâm a knight and a Swordmaster. My presence increases our chances of success.â
Such reasoning, grounded in chivalry, left no room for Balzacâs objections.
âHmmâ¦â
âHer Grace is right.â
âWith two Swordmasters, thereâs no mission we canât accomplish.â
The knights couldnât strongly oppose her, especially since her logic was sound.
Arina, the youngest unofficial Swordmaster, had already surpassed her late father in skill.
âNot being able to join the northern expedition was frustrating, but Iâm glad I can make up for it this way.â
This added weight to her resolve. She wouldnât back down.
ââ¦â
ââ¦â
In the end, the knights failed to convince her.
Balzac and the others could only shrug in silent defeat.
âThen⦠perhapsâ¦â
âSpeak, Sir Eote.â
As Balzacâs suggestion was dismissed, another knight, Sir Eote, cautiously spoke.
âWhat if we brought the witches of the High Tower with us? Their elemental magic would be useful in the Demonic Realm, especially against a necromancer skilled in curses.â
âSpring is near; enlisting the witches would disrupt their work, Sir Eote.â
Doyle quickly voiced his concerns.
âExactly. The Witchesâ Coven is busy right now, and most witches arenât accustomed to combat magic. Besides, ordinary witches wouldnât survive in the Demonic Realm.â
Arina supported Doyleâs concerns.
âThe Grand Witch of Spring could be helpful in battle.â
