"Meri biwi nahi, majboori ho tum" He increased his grip on her hand.
(You aren't my wife. You are just a compulsion)
"To kyu apnai ap ny ye majboori. Inkar kar dete. Kyu meri zindagi barbad ki?" She raised her voice at his unjust behavior.
(Why did you accept this compulsion then. You could have said 'no'. Why did you destroy my life?)
"How dare you!!" He took hold of her other hand, completely caged her.
"You are hurting me" She struggled to free her hand from his firm grip.
"There is the door. If your life is destroyed by marrying me. You can leave my house. But don't you ever dare to raise your voice at me!" He stared into her soul.
"I am just asking you about your behavior. You can't treat me like that" She didn't want to cry, not at the moment.
"Don't challenge me" He smirked.
"Why did you marry me in the first place. If you wanted nothing to do with me. We are married. I just can't leave this house like that. Can't you understand" She said in a low voice this time. She pushed her tears back, and didn't want to look weak in front of him.
"Ask these nonsense questions from those who tied us together. I am not answerable to you!" He snapped, releasing her hands.
"You are my husband. You 'are' answerable to me" She asked fiercely, looking into his deep eyes.
"Chup. Bilkul chup. Awaz na nikly tumhari" He shouted at the top of his lungs, holding her by her shoulders, he shook her.
(Silence. Keep silence. Don't utter a word again)
"Not a word again" He stared into her eyes.
Zohal's eyes watered in nano seconds. Zarrar stilled at his place for a few seconds. He could see fear and helplessness in her eyes. He felt a strange itch in his heart. His heart regretted what happened a few seconds ago. He instantly removed his hands from her.
"Bohat bolti ho tum" He mumbled looking away from her teary eyes.
(You speak too much)
She was silenced. She shivered hearing his loud and angry voice. His eyes were full of rage. He had fire in them who could destroy her completely. She was already going through a lot. She didn't want to face an unbearable humiliation at his hands.
She didn't want to be hit by a man again. Not at least, her husband.
He was bothered by her eyes. He was bothered by her existence.
"Keep silent if you want to live here otherwise you are most welcome to get out of my house. I don't like to repeat myself again and again. If you dared to argue with me again. I will make you leave my house!" He said strictly before disappearing into his room.
"What the hell is wrong with me" He slapped his hand on the cupboard in anger.
...
It was another cold evening. Zarrar was locked in his room after coming back from the office. He came out late in the evening. He looked around in the small living space. His eyes did not find the person who was living in this space these days.
He walked out of the cottage only to find her.
He found her sitting on the grass near the lake. Unknowingly, he walked to her. She didn't feel his presence there. She was lost in her thoughts.
"Zohal!" He took her name for the first time.
She startled when heard his deep voice. She looked up to catch a glance of him. He was looking down at her.
"Yes!" She asked, looking at him.
"You.." He didn't know what to say next. He didn't even know why he came to her. He didn't find her inside so he just came out to see her. He himself was shocked at what he just did. Why was he bothered?
"What?" She asked.
"You weren't inside" He muttered.
"Yeah. So?" She asked him a difficult question.
"So. So what? I just came to check upon you" He shrugged his shoulders.
"Like you care!!" She smirked.
"In your dreams" He said, moving away from her.
He walked to his favorite place, the tall green tree. He rested his back on the tree and started watching the lake leisurely.
"I met uncle today!" She told him, looking at the water.
He didn't comment.
"Uncle told me he forced you into this marriage by black mailing you" Zohal said standing next to him.
He did not realize her presence behind him till she spoke. He turned around to look at her.
"I was also forced into this. I understand you don't want anything to do with me. Let's make a deal then! I want to shift to the city after completing my degree and start doing a job to support myself. My family isn't supportive. I want you to help me and in return I won't disturb you. I will not interfere in your life and will leave you silently without creating a scene in front of your family" She voiced her thoughts.
"Perfect" He acknowledged her just in a small word.
"So?" She looked at him in a questioning way.
"Fine" He mumbled looking away from her.
From that day, they both compromised with the situation. Zarrar was satisfied that she wasn't invading his personal space anymore. Zohal had realized that she didn't have any future with this arrogant man who was not interested in her. She didn't want to be a compulsion in his life either. She started preparing hard for her exams which were now a week away.
"Today is my first exam" She announced to him. They were having breakfast made by her, silently.
"Then?" He looked at her in a questioning way.
"You have to drop me at the university campus" She told him.
"Driver nahi hoon main tumhara!" He minded her tone which wasn't offensive in any way.
(I am not your driver)
"Shohar to hain na!" She replied innocently, shrugging her shoulders.
(But you are my husband)
He stared at her silently. The way she claimed him as hers, did something strange to him which he would never accept to himself.
"I will leave in five minutes" He announced to her so that she can get her things together.
After her wedding day, she was travelling for the first time with him. Their car was passing through the mountains. The clouds were hanging down in the sky. Her mind refreshed watching the beautiful scenery.
"Everything is so beautiful" She mumbled, looking out of the window.
"Not everything is" He whispered but she did hear him.
"Why doesn't anything appeal to you?" She asked him softly.
He glanced at her and fixed his attention back to the road. He didn't want to reply to her. He just didn't want to.
"Zarrar! I asked you something" She softly took her name and it melted the ice around his heart. That's why he didn't want to talk to her. Her soft voice and her beautiful eyes were teasing him from the day she entered his life. He wanted to stay away from all of this.
"I don't find any charm in anything" Unwantedly, he replied to her.
"Why?"
"Don't disturb me!" He silenced her.
Zohal started looking out of the window again. Zarrar found her a part of the beautiful scenery. She was lost in the outside world and he was fighting with himself.
"Lagta hy ap ny khabi phooloon ki khusbhoo ko mehsoos nahi kia. Na hi barish ki boondoon ko or na hi sabze se tazgi ko" She shared her thoughts with him.
(It seems like you never smelled flowers. You never felt the softness of rain drops and neither did you feel the freshness of grass)
Zarrar glanced at her silently. She was right. He never did any of it. His heart never got attracted to anything like that but how did she come to know about this.
"Why aren't you a normal person Zarrar?"
How she realized that he was different when all his life no one ever bothered to ask him why he was like that?
