"You mean love"

"No way. I meant what I said. I hate you"

"So you hate me?"

"Absolutely!"

"No problem! I hate you too"

The sun spread its shinny rays in the corridors of Fatima Memorial Hospital, a government teaching hospital that was facilitating thousands of patients everyday. It was one of the biggest and oldest hospitals in the city.

After a long weekend, the daily routine of Final year medical students started again who were now rotated to the surgical unit from the gynea unit. The previous surgical batch was rotated to the peads unit. That's how all the final year batches used to rotate throughout the year. Half of the year had already passed.

The new surgical batch had a student who wasn't very good in studies. Neither she was much confident about her medical knowledge. She was among the below average students of her class. Her personality was complex and so was her nature.

She was Inara Ibrahim, a final year medical student who never wanted to become a doctor at first place but was stuck in this field due to family pressure.

Welcome to the life of an average Pakistani medical student!

"Ya Allah! How will I spend three freaking months in this unit. Surgery is the toughest subject not that I like other subjects. I hate all of them equally but Surgery is a big 'no" Thoughts kept running in her mind. She couldn't focus on anything happening in the ward. She was lost in her own world.

"Inara move yourself and start taking history of your assigned patient otherwise Dr. Zulaid is gonna insult you in front of everyone. I am telling you, He doesn't spare anyone" Her friend, Sama made her realize the situation they were stuck in.

"Yes yes!!" Inara walked to her assigned bed where a HO, house Officer was already examining the patient.

"You are from Final year?" Dr. Suleman asked her.

"Yes. Sir!" She replied.

"Have you taken his history?" He asked her about the patient he was examining a few moments ago.

"Not yet" She told him, feeling embarrassed. It was her first day in the unit and she wasn't serious about her basics. By the way who gets serious on the very first day.

"It's okay. It's your first day I can understand. I am Dr. Suleman. I can tell you about the patient" He asked her nicely.

"Sure Sir! Thank you!" She was grateful to him for his kind gesture.

All the students were busy taking histories from the patients. House officers were assessing the patients and preparing for the surgeon's round.

"Why haven't you reached yet Ali!!! Dr. Zulaid will be here at sharp 9. You are dead today. Trust me!" Dr. Hamza, another HO, snapped at his friend on the phone call.

"Surgeon hain ya dracula" Inara thought, rolling her eyes.

(Is he a surgeon or a dracula)

On the other side of the ward, two female on call HOs were gossiping after preparing for the round. Their shift was going to be ended at 10 o'clock. Right now no one was more happier than them.

"Uffff yar I really don't want to take his round. Dimagh paka ke rakh dete hain Dr. Zulaid" One of them, said frustratingly to her colleague.

(Dr. Zulaid is very annoying)

"Dr. Zulaid ka buss chale to sara din parhate rahain. Inka round to hatam hi ni hota. Ya Allah!!" The other one shared her thoughts too.

(If it was in Dr. Zulaid's hand he wouldn't have left her the whole day. He would keep teaching us)

"He is very scary yar" The first one stated.

"Oh come on! Don't call him scary at least. I know he is very strict but don't insult him by calling him scary. He is very good looking!!" The second HO clearly forgot the humiliation she faced two days ago at the hands of the same doctor.

A group of final year medical students were standing near those HOs. Inara was one of them. They heard their seniors clearly.

"Dr. Zulaid seems to be a very strict surgeon. Everyone in the department is saying it" A student stated worriedly.

"He might be some old hag. Babay sare sariyal hote hain" Another one exclaimed.

(All old men are strict)

Inara didn't took part in the conversation. She was constantly thinking about the lasagna she was gonna prepare after going back home. She would watch a movie with it. She was making plans to enjoy her evening, not caring about her morning.

The clock turned to 9 o' clock and a Senior doctor came into the ward with his five post graduates trainees. Everyone in the ward except the patients was alerted. Everyone left their assigned beds and walked to the bed no. 1 where the senior doctor was standing.

"Dr. Zulaid is here" Someone said to his friend on the phone call.

"Where?" A student asked looking around.

"Do you have vision problem. He is standing at bed no. 1" An HO insulted the student like he had the right to do it.

"Ye hain Dr. Zulaid" The student couldn't believe her eyes.

(Is he really him?)

The students were shocked to see a young doctor. They were expecting him to be an old man according to the details they got to know about his personality.

Dr. Zulaid was a young man of 32 years old who had completed his residency in General Surgery from America. After working in America, he came back to Pakistan and joined Fatima Memorial Hospital as a consultant and Associate professor.

"Sir! She is Saira Bano. 56 years old. She was presented to the ER last night with severe abdominal pain, fever and vomiting. Pain is dull and radiating to her back.." Dr. Azwa, the post graduate trainee who was on duty in the emergency department last night, informed the surgeon.

"Aslamo alaikum! Kesi tabiyat hy apki ab? Behter mehsoos kar rahi hain" Dr. Zulaid politely asked the patient. Before speaking he had tough expressions on his face but when he spoke to the patient, his tone was soft and caring. He also had a smile on his face.

(How are you? Are you feeling better now?)

"Dr. Sahab A bit better" The patient replied slowly.

Dr. Azwa discusssed the case with Dr. Zulaid before moving to the next bed which was none other then the assigned bed of the student named, Inara Ibrahim.

"Sir!.." Dr. Babar, another post graduate trainee was about to give a short history of her patient to his patient when he was cut in the middle.

"Which student is assigned this bed?" He asked, watching a group of students standing at his left side.

"Mine Sir!" Inara took a deep breath and moved forward.

"Your introduction?" He looked at her face and asked in his deep voice which was devoid of any kind of softness.

"Inara Ibrahim" She muttered.

"I couldn't hear you. Can you speak louder?" He asked monotonously.

"Inara Ibrahim" She stated louder this time.

"Okay Dr. Sahiba tell me the history of this patient" He commanded her.

Inara's anxiety level reached its peak when he asked him to do the task she was supposed to do but she was dumb enough to not do it, thinking that it was their first day. Pehly din kon parhata hy.

Now she was going to be get scolded in a group of people. Her hear beat accelerated. She was looking tense.

Bhare majme main beizzat hogi tum Inara!!!!! Her inner self warned her.
