Chapter 12

Yes

Shortie & Knight

*Maximus*

I looked up from tying my shoes to see Amy walking out of her front door. I gaped at how good she looked in the outfit that we (mostly she) had chosen.

She was wearing a simple white button up with no sleeves, the shirt tucked into her black skinny jeans. She was wearing some black Converse wedges, the heels so high that she looked Samantha's height. Her black-rimmed glasses didn't hide her greenish-brown eyes that sparkled in the morning sun. Her make up was simple; eyeliner, foundation, and nude lipstick. Her auburn hair was in a messy bun at the top of her head, showing all of her beautiful face. Last but not least, the red bow tie and black and white plaid suspenders.

I was wearing the same thing except for my black Air Jordan's and my normal messy hairdo. I had even bought fake glasses that looked like Amy's just for this outfit, all because she asked me too.

West was right. I was whipped.

Amy smiled brightly before fixing the strap on her backpack. "Hey knight! You look nice from up here!"

I laughed. "You're almost as tall as Samantha, shortie. How tall are those things?"

She smiled. "Six inches. I didn't want to look so tiny next to you when we spoke. Besides, these are super cute!"

I nodded my head. "Let's go, then. We have to take pictures anyway."

She smiled. I grabbed her waist and lifted her into the car, not wanting her to break an ankle when stepping on the high steps. She thanked me as I closed the door for her. I ran over to the driver's side with only one thought in my mind.

School's going to be interesting for her, I'm sure.

~<~<~<

No one in my school knows how to shut the fuck up.

I mean, seriously? I walk in with my friend, who just-so-happened to be a girl that is as cute as Amy, and everyone thinks that we're the best couple in the whole school. Yeah, matching is cute, but it's only cute because Amy made it cute. In fact, screw it, they all look like trash compared to us!

I forgot what my point was...

Right! Get a life people! Or at least stay out of mine.

When it was time for both of us to present in History, Amy was really nervous. She kept fiddling with her hands, chewing her bottom lip, staying close to my side (which I didn't mind at all), and tripping over air.

As soon as we made it in front of the room, she looked up and almost screamed, I'm sure. Her face looked so scared and surprised that I was honestly worried about her. I whispered a few encouraging words to her, which most people misunderstood and thought that I was flirting, and she instantly calmed down.

I guess I have that calming affect on people.

We easily explained the whole Progressive Era, adding extra facts (looking all professional in our nerdy outfits), and actually got applause. Like, literal clapping of the hands for our good work from multiple children in the class.

Yeah, that type of applause? The one an audience gives at the end of a show? The regular kind? The only kind? We got that.

We're sooo special.

After History was lunch, which meant Amy and Samantha sitting at the table with the guys (West, Kyle, Xander, and Jacob, who, yes, I was still friends with) and Samantha cooed over our outfit choice. She kept saying that she had better be the godmother of our non-existent children and that she could babysit anytime (except Mondays).

I hadn't even told Amy that I liked her yet and there we were with three children.

After lunch was free period, which was the time that I was going to tell Amy I liked her. I had the perfect plan and I didn't want anyone to ruin it.

In the gym I had asked Samantha to hide behind the bleachers to video Amy's reactions when she saw me standing there. I'd also asked her to tell a bunch of other kids to be all excited about to going to the gym for something so Amy could be intrigued. I knew she wasn't much for crowds, so she wouldn't go alone, which I why I asked West and Xander to go and "check it out" with her. They obviously knew what the plan was and promised to try their best in their acting skills.

When it was time for Amy to come, I took my place in front of the gym doors as Samantha hid behind the bleachers. Kyle and Audrey knew about the plan, but I asked them not to interfere. They were both super dramatic and loved to make a big deal of relationships, making them the worst people for a surprise for a simple girl like Amy.

"I don't understand why everyone is so excited about the gym. I mean, seriously, everyone hates P.E.! Why in the world would they be gossiping about it?" West's loud voice "wondered", his body unseen to me since they were still in the hallway.

"I'm sure someone spray-painted the whole ceiling or something like that," Xander suggested.

I heard a soft giggle. "If anything, it's good. There has to be a whole buffet that we don't know about."

Xander and West laughed. "I think you're right," they said in unison.

"If they keep talking about stupid stuff, I'm going to rip their mouths off!" Samantha growled.

I chuckled and fixed my glasses. "Just wait a few moments, they'll come in."

She rolled her eyes. "At least they're selling it. I guess my coaching really worked."

"You coached them?"

"Like a goddamn General."

"Generals don't coa-"

"SHHHHH, they're close!" She whispered before ducking further behind the bleachers.

I sucked in a deep breath and smiled when the door opened, revealing a very happy Amy, West, and Xander. Amy's large doe eyes widened and she looked around the empty gym. Everyone was waiting outside, at least that's what Audrey told me, and she would only let them in if Samantha gave them the signal.

I was a little worried what the signal was implying, to be honest.

"Hey," I cleared my throat, "Hey Amy."

Amy smiled. "Hi Max. Where is everyone?"

I rubbed the back of my neck nervously. "That's not important. I-I-uh... I wanted to a-ask you someth-well, actually, t-tell you something."

Amy tilted her head to the side. "Are you okay? And why are there flowers in your pocket?"

I coughed nervously. "Um... I'm fine. Actually, I'm great! Now that you're here. I-uh-well... I have feelings for this girl. She's the most beautiful person that has ever existed and her personality is so pure it makes me smile. She's shy, really shy, but can be pretty sassy once she warms up to you. We've known each other since kindergarten, and I've secretly liked her since forth grade. She helped me read better, understand multiplication and division, and was always one to stand out amongst the crowd. She's also wearing the same outfit as me right now and is staring at me as if I'm a complete weirdo." Amy's eyes widened. "Her name is Amethyst Rosetta Stone and, though she thinks that she's always in the shadows, I can name about fifteen people that have a huge crush on her as well. I'm just the only one that has liked her for most of my childhood." I took a deep breath and held out one of the lavenders, which I learned were Amy's favorite flower. "Amethyst, will you go out on a date with me?"

Amy's jaw dropped and Xander, West, Samantha, and I held our breaths. The tension in the room was so thick, I felt like I was being crushed by it. Amy's reaction was scary to me, like really scary, and the fact that she didn't say anything for what felt like forever, I thought that she was trying to find a way to say no to me.

You can only imagine how I felt when she squealed happily while repeatedly punching Xander's shoulder.

"OMG, OMG, O.M.G!!!!" She screamed.

I smiled. "Is that a yes?"

She pushed Xander so hard that he fell onto his butt. "DUH!" she cheered before running, and I mean running, into me with her little six-inch heels.

I laughed and picked her up over my head, both of us smiling widely at each other.

"She said yes!" Samantha yelled from behind the bleachers.

The back doors of the gym busted open with a bang, revealing Audrey on a random guy's shoulder as the marching band and half of the student body followed behind her. She was smiling brightly and waving as though she was the Queen of England. Though, of course it didn't stop there. Not when Kyle is my best friend. After everyone was in the gym, Kyle came in with the whole soccer field, not including West and Xander, screaming "goal" as they kept throwing Kyle up in the air.

It still wasn't done.

"Come on ladies!" Kyle screamed.

A whole, fully female, church choir jumped out from the bleachers and sang the lyrics of "When the Saints go Marching in," as the marching band started playing. Kyle was set down onto the ground and the soccer team started to do a dance to the song.

I set Amy down and gawked at all that commotion that was going on, all because Amy said yes. Samantha was smiling evilly while Audrey was happily clapping along to the song. West was trying his best to lift a groaning Xander up from the floor while cheerfully singing along with the choir.

"Now you guys have to sing!" Samantha cheered over the music and laughing and dancing.

Amy shook her head. "No thanks."

"Come on, Ames, be a little more adventurous!"

Amy looked down, her blush getting redder by the second. I looked down at her stunning face and smiled, her blush making her that much cuter. Her eyes were twinkling brightly and her plump lips were slightly pouted, her embarrassed faces one of my favorites. She wrung her hands together and shuffled closer to me, making me smiled and wrap an arm around her shoulder.

"I like this shortie the best," I placed the lavender in her hair, "She's the one who said yes, the only one I want."

And it was true, because, I had never wanted anyone else except for Amy.

•Amethyst•

I was freaking out.

You know that feeling, where, your heart is in overdrive and you feel like you're going to explode? That feeling where you feel like, even though your heart is beating fast, your world is going in slow motion? That feeling where everything, though slowed down, is completely sped up? Where everything is in reach, if you move just a bit, but you're stuck? Where everything is spinning, yet staying still, where everything is noisy, yet quiet?

Where everything is perfect, yet so wrong?

No? Just me? Are you sure? Come on, you've had to have felt this before! I mean, it can't just be me. I can't have felt like I'm in heaven and hell at the same time! I can't! Not when there are so many more stressful situations that I could be in right now! Right?

Who am I kidding? First dates with your first crush are the most stressful thing in the world.

Maybe I was exaggerating, just maybe, but I felt like I might loudly explode yet quietly implode at the same time. If that's even possible... nope, it's possible.

I was doing it right then.

I held a scream in my throat and rip more clothes from my closet. My frustration was making my blood boil and my heart race. I hated this feeling, knowing how imperfect I was, and I wanted it to stop. Max and I's date was that day, in two hours, and I wanted to look perfect for him. I wanted to look confident, yet modest, cool, yet excited.

The thing was, I was boring and average-looking and to look even half as good as Max would that night, would be the biggest challenge of my life.

I bit my lip nervously and grabbed a pair of black high-waisted shorts and a white bandeau top, smiling at the combination of the two. I then smiled even wider when I saw a pink varsity jacket with one black sleeve and one white. It matched perfectly with my outfit, and since Max said to dress pretty casual, I decided it was perfect.

Finally, a good outfit. I thought.

Once I had finished getting ready, I smiled at my reflection. All of the stress had brought me back to a day in first grade, when I kind of lashed out. I wasn't one with a temper, but I definitely had a outburst that day.
