The Oceans Call
I wake up and roll over to see the sunrise out my window. Still not used to the fact that's the view I get to wake up to everyday. There's a light knock on my door.
"Yeah?"
"Can I come in?" Everest asks, already opening the door.
"Yeah." I let out a small laugh.
"So how was yesterday?" He asks as he sits down on my bed.
"It was fun. He showed me a lot of cool little local spots."
"Yeah? Well that sounds fun. You gonna see him again?"
"Yeah probably."
"A second date and it's only your third day here. Look at you go."
"Second date? What? No. No that wasn't a date. That was just him showing me some cool spots because I'm new here."
"Oh yeah, cause that's totally normal to take someone all around the island just cause they're new."
"He was just being nice."
"You guys do anything else?" He asks raising his eyebrow.
"I don't want to talk about it with you!" I say laughing and getting out of bed.
"You totally did! What did you guys do?! Did he kiss you? Oh my god, I might have to kill a cop-"
"Everest! You're not killing anyone!"
"So he didn't"
"I didn't say that..." I can feel my cheeks heating up.
"Ahh, I regret asking!"
"I knew you would!" I say laughing.
"Gross. Eww. Change of subject, you wanna go surfing?"
"You know I have no idea how to surf, right?"
"Well I will teach you. I'm pretty good at teaching people."
"Oh yeah, okay. The last time you tried to teach me anything, I ran your car into a tree because I had no idea how to drive stick."
"Well you're just a terrible student, that had nothing to do with me."
"Oh yeah, okay. I want to learn how to surf though, so I guess you're my only option."
"There's the spirit! Get dressed. I'll meet you out back in five." He leaves my room and shuts the door. I quickly put my bikini on and grab my wet suit off the floor and run out to the backyard.
"Here, you can have this one, it's more your height." Everest says handing me a dark wood board with white around the edges. The bottom was mostly white except for some blue decals.
"This one is super cool. When did you get this one?"
"You don't remember that one?"
"Huh uh."
"That's the board that dad taught mom how to surf on."
"No way, really?"
"Yeah. He left it for you. Thought I could carry on the tradition."
"That's super awesome. So it's like, mine?"
"Haha yeah kiddo, it's yours." He wraps his arm around me and I hug him.
"I could probably cry."
"Well don't do that. Makes it hard so see and that's kind of something you need when you're surfing."
"You make a good point."
"Come on, down to the water we go."
We spent a couple hours in the water, and I mean in the water. I fell off that board so many times. Everest pretty much just laughed at me the whole time and kept showing off that he was better at surfing than me. Finally when I was about to give up, a decent sized wave came up behind me and I actually rode the thing into shore.
"YAAAA!!!" Everest yells from out in the water.
"I did it!!" I yell, throwing my arms up in the air. Everest takes the next wave in, and meets me up on the beach.
"You did so good! I'm proud of you. And I'm sure dad would be too." We both smile at each other and I look down at the board and smile at it.
"Yeah, I'm sure he would be. Thank you for this. The board and teaching me and everything."
"Of course. We can come out here whenever you want to. Eventually you might even be almost as good as me." He laughs and shakes his hair, getting some of the water out of it.
"Oh yeah. Almost." I say mocking him. I give him a light shove and we walk back up to the house.
"Any plans for the rest of the day?"
"Not really. Don't have any friends yet."
"Well, I'm going out to dinner with a few friends and some of them are girls, or have girlfriends. You wanna join?"
"You sure?"
"Of course I am. They're all meeting here around five. So we have about four hours. I've gotta run into town and pick up some beer and more water bottles. You need anything?"
"Beer sounds good to me. Maybe a case of Mike's?"
"There's already two cases in the fridge out back..."
"There are?"
"Yeah." He says with a laugh. "I knew it was your favorite so I stalked up. I thought you saw them."
"No I did not, but I'm sure about to." We walk up the steps to the porch and I open the fridge and grab a bottle out. "You're the best."
"I know. I'm gonna go get my shoes and I'll be back shortly."
"Sounds good." I walk inside to the kitchen and grab a bottle opener and pop the cap off. I grab my phone out of my bedroom and walk down to the beach and sit on a little lawn chair that Everest had set up. I feel my phone vibrate and I see I had a couple texts from one of my best friend back home, Leighton.
L:'How's the Hawaiian life?'
B:'I love it so much.'
L:' I'm so jelly. I wish I was there.'
B:' Come visit me!!'
L:' Yeah ok. Let me just win the lottery real quick'
B:' Yeah plane tickets are kinda spendy but its totes worth it. Plus you can stay with me.'
L:' I'll have to plan something soon.'
'Any cute boys??'
B:' All over the place ;P'
L:' Awe man, a cute hawaiin man, sign me up. You got one yet?'
B:' Uhmm kinda. I don't really know.'
L: 'Spill'
B: 'Well his name is Steve. And he's the commander of the lead crime task force here. He's ridiculously hot and funny'
L: 'Good kisser?'
B: 'Honestly the best I've ever experienced'
L: 'GET IT GIRL! You've been there for like three days and you're already dating a hot cop, I'm super jelly now'
B: 'We are not dating. We hung out for one day'
L: 'Sounds like you got a lot accomplished in one day.'
B: 'A whole lot :P'
L: 'When are you gonna see him again?'
B: 'I don't know. I'm supposed to call him today'
L: 'What are you waiting for?! Call him!'
B: 'Fine lol. I will call him."
I laugh as I close out of my texts and I scroll through my contacts to find Steve's number. It takes me a few seconds, but I finally hit the call button. It rings three times until he answers.
"I was wondering if you were ever going to call." Steve says answering the phone.
"I promise I was, I've been surfing with my brother all morning."
"Yeah? How'd you do?"
"Oh I am a pro now."
"Oh is that right." I could tell he was smiling, and trying to hold back a laugh.
"For sure. I'm probably better than you."
"We will have to see about that, won't we?"
"Is that a promise?"
"Promise." He lets out a cute laugh. "So what are you up to tonight?"
"Well right now I'm sitting on the beach drinking, and later I guess I'm going out to dinner with my brother and some of his friends. He's trying to make me some friends, probably so I'm not always bothering him."
"Haha I doubt that's why he's doing it. But that sounds like a good time. I'd say I would come over and join you with your day drinking, but I'm stuck on a case."
"Well don't you worry. There's plenty of time to join me. How's the case going?"
"We're getting close, so it's almost over."
"Well we will have to celebrate when it is over."
"Yes we will, won't we?" I hear a voice in the background, kinda sounds like Danny. "Alright I guess we just got a lead on a suspect, but I will call you tonight? We can plan something?"
"Looking forward to it."
"Bye, Brooklyn."
"Bye, Steve." I smile and hang up the phone.
