[Jack's email to Ceci]

Dear Ceci,

Here's our written announcement about Gary's acquittal. The first one, we posted to our friends at the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar. The second was posted to our friends at The Trial Lawyer's College.  Please don't judge me too harshly about the sex fantasy.

Dear Friends,

Three Boulder cops and a Boulder Cop ride-along, testified as eye-witnesses against our client (4 on 1) attempting to convict him of two felony counts of second degree assault on a police officer and two misdemeanor counts of third degree assault on a police officer. The jury acquitted him on all four assault counts, and convicted on misdemeanor obstruction and resisting.

Thanks goes to our courageous client and his wife, expert witness Police Chief Taylor, expert video editors Ceci, Ethan, and Trevor, legal expert Cleo Ginsberg, our trial assistant (now young lawyer) Anne Smith, and huge community support in the courtroom.

Time to eat, sleep, and shred.

Dear Trial Lawyer's College Alumni,

. . . Our trial was steeped in TLC principles. Me during jury selection: "When I hear a guy has been accused of a crime by four police officers who were eye-witnesses, I presume he did the crime. I know he is presumed innocent, but my honest feeling is that he did the crime. I'm not proud of this bias, but that's the way I feel. Am I alone on this?"

Our crosses of the police were always fair, honorable, and courteous, but heavy blows from sword and sledge, cutting away skin, breaking bones, and exposing lies. As the State's case began to stagger, the DAs poured on the hate. It was brutal and vicious. But we responded with love and an understanding of how they had been misled by the cops.

How did we do it?  I have no idea. Maybe sheer will because I wanted to lash out at those bastards with an aluminum baseball bat. At times, the punishment inflicted on us was like a beating, like a crucifixion. But my client and I held on and responded with kindness. Their attacks were so vicious and our response so peaceful, jurors actually submitted written pleas to the Judge to reconsider her rulings against us. In more than 30 years in the courts, I have never seen that.

In the end, against four eye-witness cops, an all-white jury sided with my client and acquitted on all four counts of assault on a police officer.

PS: I'd like to say we used entirely enlightened principles of pure love to endure the shit storm. We did think and talk about such things and my client is a committed Buddhist. But every morning before trial, I would try to convince myself that I wanted to be with both DAs, in the Biblical sense, and then would look on them with loving eyes. The result was that their hate storm looked like the whipping of a puppy.

What an amazing strategy. I have a feeling you watched a lot of the TV series Kung Fu when you were young. Thinking of some kind of tree analogy that guided you guys to bend and allow the mean spirited winds to pass through you unaffected.

Hey Grasshopper! Big news. Our case against Nancy Grace and CNN is "RESOLVED"!! Client wanted to get on with his life, not have more media and drama from a high-profile trial. Now working on the details of the "resolution".

Will call you. I'm going to do what I can to get terms that don't strip Grace's sections from our book. Keep you updated.

Tom Metier is negotiating the "resolution" details with CNN/Grace. Thinks he can protect our book. The resolution also takes a huge load off Cleo. It would have been her job to write our response brief this week. The negotiating puts that on hold so we can give her a little shelter. Her man was a giant. Smart like Cleo, a scientist, and a cook, with a big warm heart. So sad.

What's up? I'm feeling pretty good. How about you?

Took a bunch of Cleo's favorite things to her yesterday, nice bread, soup, ice cream, a special pizza... Just talked about whatever. She won't accept any help. Tough as nails. She was 14 when she snuck off to Woodstock. She can rebuild a motorcycle. Fly a plane. Run a restaurant. Clerked for the Chief Justice of the Colorado Supreme Court.  She's a mom who can do anything she tries, and my best buddy in the law. I hate to see her sad.

There is a sweet, smiley, good to the bone kid who grew up in the house behind ours. This morning, I went to the jail to visit him. He's just 18 and got arrested on a bunch of misdemeanors. So back in the fight...

I need you to pick your fake pen name and come up with a good title for our book.

For your name, I was thinking Ruby or Tiphaneee. Or maybe T.Fanny.

So much pho for lunch my belly is sloshing like a fish bowl.

I've used the name Ruby before for a movie character.

From the names you're throwing out,  I'm going to offer up a name I came up with when I was a kid.

It's my "famous" name: Ceci Trevain.
